Royalty....big up yourself for bravery, and thank your stars you discovered it b4 anyone else.As for me i would not only have tasted the 3rd layer but called my best friend to taste to be sure b4 i throw it out.I have been decorating cakes since 2005,no formal training,i learnt all from youtube, online,tv,CC and trial and error,so its totally something I can do. K8....i fear u now,i'm scared to post my mistakes here as I dont want you people to bury me alive instead of helping.Let's all remember our humble beginings ,I bet even big timers like Sugarshack and Duff still make mistakes but we never hear them. Please let's try to encourage each other.

The butane is the propellant in the air can. It's not in bold letters... it's in the fine print on the back. The can needs a propellant to expell it's contents... compressed gas (like butane) is what is commonly used.

I have not looked to see if there is a specific brand that is food safe, but using the typical air can on a show piece wouldn't be a big deal since they aren't for consumption. The canned air doesn't smell heavily of butane either. I use canned air to dust my electronics and the only thing that's obviously bad about it is the fact that the can gets FREEZING if you use it for a while... I'm talking freezer burn cold.

Let's not crucify her...

This is what you should have been using: http://www.pastrychef.com/CHOCOLATE-amp-SUGAR-FREEZE-SPRAY_p_700.html (however, it is for chocolate and sugar and I don't see why you would use it for fondant - but you may not have known that)

As for everything else... well, wow. That is all.

I stand corrected. I was wrong.

Sorry I doubted you, op. And I'm sorry you got sick.

Well I don't know you K8. Don't think it really matters that you have 2300 posts or not considering your post counts can go up just by playing games in the Lounge. I don't see any cake photos of yours. I seen a website on your profile, are those your cakes? And why don't you post any on here?

Glad you apologised to OP! I found the people on this site to be really nice and hope it stays that way. icon_biggrin.gif

I am very glad to see that royalty is staying with us. I hope you will find this site very helpful and don't lurk in a closet. We really do love new faces and *LOVE* to help people improve in the fine craft.

Why is it all about how many posts we have?? I am not all that new to this site, and i only have a handful of posts. The reason being for that is i try to spend more time decorating and baking than typing. Having said that, i applaud the ones of you that have time to post more frequently, i however do not have that much time. So why is it that there is so many of you that are ready to burn her at the stake for her very first post? The point of having this site is to share and learn correct? She shared her learning expierience. It really saddens me that this site that has helped me soooo much would do this to a new member. That girl could be the next Duff, you never know. I have done things wrong in all my traili and errors in the kitchen, and i am sure many of us have. Instead of judging her shouldnt we all be trying to help her? I dont believe that the amount of posts that we have should determine how "good" or "believable" we are as members. Because when it gets down to it, no matter who would have posted this i get the feeling that the results would have been the same. Its a shame that there aren't more people trying to help. I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but quite frankly, those of you who are condemning her for this, you might need to get off your cake pedestal and try helping instead of hurting peoples feelings for what seems to me like a mistake, an honest mistake that any one of us could have made.

Butanes are odorless and colorless. Therefore, the spray would not have discolored the cake, and should not have smelled funny or harmful. So, caution (for future reference). Doing this seem irrational to some people, perhaps because they are more experienced and may have even used similar (but safer) products in the past.

I'm fairly new to CC, hardly ever post, but follow forums quite often (recently following the addicted to CC forum). I'm a little disheartened -and surprised- that I've seen a few posts where unkind words are exchanged, although for the most part CC is a site where members are supportive to and encouraging of each other.

Now, we all have our moments and our bad days (both when baking/decorating and when posting on forums). There are MANY people here that are absolutely WONDERFUL, such as Macsmom, who recently shared just about every recipe known to bakers with all of us. Let's keep that spirit going and help each other out. And for those of you seasoned CC'ers, my apologies if I'm overstepping my boundaries.

Thank you all for your help, support, pictures, info and advice.

If we make an assumtion of all that have been said it would sound like this "We make mistake that we have to share with each other as when we do, when we make beautiful cakes.
Everyone is intittler to make a mistake here or there is a human and normal thing other wise we whouldnt be here we are NOT GOD. This kind of mistake could it have cost hazard to someone but fortunately it didnt, becouse GOD work in misterious way( aka mixing the dates ). So in conclucion be very very careful how to aproach other, said things or put your words. We are here to LEARN and SHARE WHAT WE HAVE IN COMMOND AND WE LOVE DOING that its BAKING CAKE not to descorauge us to share our mistakes or glory.

LOVE U ALL AND GOD BLESS U ALL.

Hi Royalty,

Thanks for sharing your bad experience, that took a lot of courage. I got flamed once for a post on this site where I asked for some extra encouragement so I know first hand how you feel. I was certainly deterred from asking for opinions from that point forward. Also, it has been my personal experience that the people who actually post their cake pictures are the most helpful.

I would encourage you to continue on this web site because the good outweighs the bad by far.

If I can ever be of any help to you, please don't hesitate to locate me and send me a PM. I am usually very quick to respond.

Good luck and welcome to Cake Central.

Royalty, so sorry to hear about your mistake. Atleast you learned a valuable lesson that you won't have to find out later. I guess we have all had a throw away cake or batch of icing atleast once, and will probably continue to make a few errors (some worse than others) as long as we continue to try new things. Welcome to the forum - your cakes are very good, hope that you stick with us....

sorry about your mishap. Those cans of air contain a bitterant so they can't be huffed. They are not intended for food. When they do the sculpting competitions they are for show only. Its used for timing purposes. I did research when I was looking into air brushes. I was trying to avoid buying a compressor. I bought a compressor after reading tha hazzards on the cans.

To be fair, I think k8memphis was the only one to be negative toward the OP, so there's no need to get down on everyone. This is a great online community, renowned for being nice and helpful, and the few instances where they have been some disagreements will not change that. In my opinion, this particular thread is just silly, so I wish we'd abandon it. I'm surprised the moderator hasn't shut it down yet.

I havn't read through all posts, so forgive me if this has been said. While starting to read this thread, I grabbed my can of dust remover that sits on my computer table.(never thought to use it on a cake even though I have seen it on challenges on FN ). I have read through the text twice and nowhere on the can do I see a list of ingredients. So how do you know what this can contains? I can see why someone would make this mistake. I did learn that you are supposed to unplug the electronic device to be cleaned. Guess I'd better do that next time.

To OP...

I can believe the butane story actually.

What I can't believe is that you've only done ten cakes and are knocking out fondant and tiers.

And I especially don't believe you'd waste money on a Wilton course, when you are far beyond that. icon_wink.gifthumbs_up.gificon_razz.gif

When you've been around here awhile, you'll quickly (!) find out how very, very helpful and knowledgeable K8 is. She's on my short list of people whose opinion I HIGHLY value and is one I would go to with a problem. We have a rare occasion where we might disagree with each other, but don't discount her valuable contributions to this site.

Talking about simmering...

Has anyone else noticed that the majority of the people who have posted on here have very few previous posts? I think a lot of people have been simmering, watching all the negativity being thrown around in the forums lately and just boiled over.

I know that I have been fed up with the attitudes here lately, but have just kept my mouth shut. When I say attitudes, it isn't the majority, but a few people have really pounced on people lately.

Miss Mary, I was simply pointing out that a very first cake can certainly be a tiered fondant creation. icon_smile.gif
