I've seen them do it. On the miley cake challenge I think it was. but they were using white chocolate to attach big pieces to the cake, not stripes or dots or anything and they weren't spraying the whole cake, like someone earlier mentioned, they were probably using an FDA approved spray can... 99% of those cakes are never consumed too. In the words of my mother.. if Susie jumped off the bridge would you do it too? icon_rolleyes.gif

k8...take it easy, why are you so rude? she's just trying to tell us about her experience, and we have two options, believe or not...if you don't believe just let her go, she is not hurting anybody...looks like you're really mad for something so silly...

Whether it's fabricated or not, what does that matter if it reminds each and every one of us to be a little extra cautious when trying something new. We should all look at it as a positive reminder. She didn't have to tell us about it at all but look at it as a learning opportunity.

Well I guess I have a few things to clear up...
The first being yes, I did just join yesterday because I was told about this website through my Wilton instructor last night during my VERY FIRST EVER cake decorating class. I have seen Bakarella, and Cake Journal, but for some reason never ran across this one (which I liked, until the claws came out)
Secondly, some of you may think it is not a true story, but yes, I hate to say it but it is all true. The dates got mixed up because I was suppose to make the cake for March 8th, last Sunday, but I made it for March 1st... It was my error, I read the email wrong because i was at work and trying to do five things at once, I jotted "cake" down in the wrong sunday box on my dayplanner...
Next, as for the air can, call me silly (or worse, as some have) but I never even considered anything other than AIR being in an air can... I had never used these before, never thought they would have any chemicals (again, I had seen them being used on Food Network and figured it would be fine, which I definately will be more careful next time) I also have made maybe 10 cakes in the whole 11 months I have been doing this. I am very much an amature and what I know is learned by watching TV (I am a visual learner, if I see you do it I can do it) also by trial and error. I didnt get angry when I found that I had messed up the dates because for one CAKE FOR ME, and two I love making them, so to me it was another chance to do what I love.
I didnt eat two pieces, and the reason I cut into the second tier is because I used a different fondant to cover that one, so I was trying to figure out if something had gotten mixed in with just the fondant from the top, or if it was all over. Curiosity killed the cat and i was meowing!! I just started my first class last night, and I love it. This is something that truly makes me happy but I am the first to admit that I have alot to learn, which is why I am here for one, and taking classes for two. I do appreciate positive (again, I repeat positive) feedback, advice and any help. Hopefully I will be able to learn alot from you regulars. Thanks for reading... hope this cleared some stuff up

I just like to say we all learn from mistakes luckly no one was hurt. Just remember we all were excited about trying something new or different on our cake we just need to pay more attention. I just wanted to say we should lighted up she made a mistake and we she help her to feel better about herself and not make a person feel bad.

I have seem them use those air cans too, and I think I would've made that mistake too. lol. Hope you don't get discouraged by this post and don't come back. I promise you will love this site!

If there was only air in a can...then there wouldn't be anything to push it out forcefully. Good luck and glad you won't make this mistake again. icon_smile.gif Welcome to CC. Please visit the general ino forum and find some great links to get you started. (Playing JANH here!)

I too think the post was suspect. I wouldn't tell a story like that the very first post ever on a website I'd never been to....too weird. But that's just me. I'm not calling you a liar OP, just a very strange story.

While we're giving the OP a break, let's give K8 a break as well....

Hey, I'm sorry, OP, that you almost poisoned everyone but only got yourself as a result.

However, I do have my doubts despite everything.

It sounds like something you would day dream and not really do, then write about somewhere.

You think someone could get all the way to finished on a 3-tier cake then notice oopsie, it's butane. You would be figuring out a way to save that puppy for the later date--few of us would laugh about that--it would not be funny to me. I would be pissed. I would not be happy if someone laughed about a huge error like that.

Maybe it's true.
I've never tried it so I guess my bad for doubting still yet I do.

I think your being extremely rude. People dont need that here.Find a nice way to tell people something. There is no need to be so rude. She made a mistake its that simple.

Hang in there Royalty. Not everyone on here is so quick to criticize. You have to kind of roll with the punches. There are alot of helpful people on here and you will learn alot of great things, just try to develop a thick skin. Seems to be more pettiness lately though. I hope you continue to enjoy decorating cakes.

Welcome aboard. At least you found out before anyone else ate it. I wouldn't have thought about anything but air being in them either. Don't worry about the the claws, sometimes they can be helpful and other times very hurtful. Just let it slide off your back like water off a ducks back and enjoy the site.

Seriously, OP. k8's really not like this normally so I think we're all a bit stunned. We love newbies and most of the time we're a fun-loving group. Don't leave just because of this post. I promise we're worth it. Some of the posts do get testy and we seem to go in spurts but I promise the stuff you learn here and the CCers on here (most of them) are so nice and helpful!

I don't think that this is something that someone would make up. What would be the point of making up a story and posting it on a website that she only recently found? What would someone get out of that? I can't understand that logic.

Besides, I can totally see myself trying the bite of the second layer trying to figure out what went wrong. I hate throwing out a piece of fondant that I let dry out...little alone a whole cake. I can see getting the dates mixed up too. I just mixed up the dates of a cake by a whole month!

Geeze-o how harshmakes me not want to post stuff on here for fear of a lash back.

Have you ever smelled canned air?? Canned propane?? NASTY!!! One whiff and you should know not to use it anywhere near a cake, or anything edible. And THAT's why I don't like potluck dinners when strangers are involved..
Royalty--NICE cakes in your photos! I want to know where you learned to decorate so well without ever having had a class--you go girl!!

Royalty: Don't sweat it, keep doing what you love to do. Better to have realized your mistake before anyone else did. Plenty of us have screwed up decorating cakes and were either to ashamed to broadcast it or grateful that no one else found out before we did. Live and learn.

As for the compressed air, the decorators on Food Network use the computer (keyboard) cleaners. It isn't FDA approved for food service use.

I you don't believe her story, you're entitled to that. It's really not that serious.

I have never ever seen a can of butane gas with a push button sprayer....they have nozzles, also the words BUTANE GAS usually are in bold letters on can. Pardon me, but wouldn't you need to be blind not to notice a label like that on a can.
Word of advice, it is not funny to almost poison anyone, including yourself. If you are making food for public consumption you better have good insurance and practice food safety 100% of the time....now off my soapbox on this one.

I'm noticing this more and more often myself. It's unfortunate, because a lot of the people that come across so harsh and downright rude usually are some that actually have a lot of knowledge to share. If you can wade through how they say things, they can be pretty helpful!

Your lesson was definitely learned! Now maybe more people will be educated on using canned air and NOT to leave it lying around especially if you have teens.

Why give me a break? Because I have helped a time or two on here and you all know me and I have over 2300 posts and you know where I live and work and I am for real. Why not treat me the way you all seem to think I am treating the op who freely admits to 'almost poisoning everyone' with her cake in her first post.

Why give me the benefit of the doubt.

Back off your own selves.

I kindly recommend that the op get this thread deleted for her benefit.

This is not something you document for the entire world to know.

I stand corrected. I was wrong.

Sorry I doubted you, op. And I'm sorry you got sick.

I'd so get this deleted if I was you.

For all that are posting things like :"It isn't funny to almost poison yourself"

Are you really saying that because you care so much for the OP or do you just want to say something?

I mean, will you really be devasted if she goes to the big "ICES convention in the sky" because she croaked from eating her cake?
Would you show up to her funeral wailing about "why did she have to use the butane? WHY!?!"

I doubt it. She made a mistake and I'm sure she didn't post this so people could tell her she's the dumbest person to ever walk the earth, maybe she just felt she could share it with us. Like someone else said, if you don't believe her, don't.

There's plenty of people that make cakes that are hazardous to the public's health and Public Health departments don't always protect John Q. Public from those decorators. One cup of milk left out too long could be the end for all of us; one mouse crawling over ingredients when a decorators back is turned can mean we ate our last piece of cake.

She caught it, resolved the problem, no one got sick, no one kicked the bucket- it is funny.
