Hello...I'm a newbie to the site and I was wondeirng if fellow cakecentral forum fans can help me with something? I'm english and my dream is to open a cosy bakery here.

I would love a Foreign Cakes section in my sit-down bakery and have already got some great Italian, French and Finnish specialities...but I don not know what goes down a treat in America! Is there a particularly yummy cake or biscuit that's American through and through?

I am not American, but the cake I most associate with America would have to be the Red Velvet cake.

Hi and Welcome to CC!
Deep South: Red Velvet Cake, King cake, Hummingbird
Southwest: Tres Leches (I prefer the Cuatro Leches tho)
Southeast Region: Lady Baltimore Cake, Robert E. Lee Cake

I found the info here:
http://whatscookingamerica.net/AmericanRegionalFoods/RegionalAmericanIndex.htm

I am sure that there are others. Hopefully some one will be along shortly to fill in the blanks.

Speaking of Apple Pie:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Apple-Pike/Detail.aspx
Perhaps you could tweak this recipe.

Hope all this randomness helps!

I don't know that it orginated here, but when I read this post I immediately thought- CUPCAKES!
They just seem so american, especially with a big swirl of american buttercream on top! and those colorful sprinkles too!
Martha Stwewart choose a chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream from bakeries all over the country because she said it was just an all american flavor. Hope this helps!
Enjoy CC, it's addictive!

Hi Charly,

How about a sour cream coffee cake. Also, I would love to know what Italian desserts you make at your coffee shop and perhaps a recipe or two. I'm Italian and always looking for a great recipe to please my family.

Thanks.
Debbie

I have to agree with the chocolate chip cookies and apple pie, although i think of red velvet cake as more of a southern thing, its certainly not popular here. For cake possibly a basic yellow or vanilla or chocolate, or how about confetti! If you're open at breakfast, how about glazed or powdered donuts.

How about Kentucky Derby Pie - kinda like a giant chocolate chip cookie baked in a pie crust.

WOW thanks for all the great replies! That's the American section of my dream bakery sorted...

What's a 'Whoopie Pie', bbmom?

And as for the italian recipes Debbie, my favourite is for a Bussola. I lived in Venice for a couple of months and it became a firm favourite from my local bakery...it's shaped like a ring and it's a lemony/almondy hard biscuit that's delizioso! I shall dig out my recipe and post it this eve.

Loks like it's a pie/cupcake/mosit/chocolate scene in America!

Dr. Pepper Cake and Coca-Cola Cake. To get the full effect you have to use the Dublin Dr. Pepper and Mexican Coke (irony alert!) because they are made with real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup. I swear it makes a difference!

Oh, and Texas Sheet Cake is the bomb-diggity! icon_lol.gif

And as others have said, Red Velvet and Pecan Pie (and you have to pronounce "Pecan" like "Puh-con" icon_biggrin.gif ).

I will chime in with a Tennessee Stack Cake. If you have ever had one of these "done right", then you know how yummy it can be! I will second and third the Coca Cola cake- very popular in the south.
