The only thing I can think of is to star pipe it like on character cakes. HTH

I've never done this, but I would probably ice it like I would any other cake. Using a crusting BC, I'd crumb coat the whole thing then let it set up. Then I'd put the top coat of icing on, let that crust, and smooth with Viva paper towels.
Again I'm not sure if that would work, but that's how I'd approach it.

I did a combination of all of the above. I actually did my bottom half first. I placed it flat side down on wax paper.
I did a quick crumb coat then using the star #17 tip, I iced all the way around the cake. I let it set up just a bit and used the viva paper towel to smooth it. Let it crust up a bit more and flipped it on to the cake board that had a litle extra icing on it for glue.

Then I filled and placed the top half on the already iced bottom half. I put a long long lollipop stick or screw threw it so I could have something to hold on to as I iced. it also added stability when I had to take it to my mom's.

Did the star tip around the top half. Viva awayicon_smile.gif Then I added the accents. Here is a pic. hope this helps.

FYI, I will never do another all black bc cake again...people looked hysterical. I only did it because my mom's colors were black with red and white accents for Christmas.
