Ok so I thought everyone would enjoy this. I quoted a customer 52.50 for an 8inch fondant cake. I give a military discount (50 cents off a slice), so the original price would be 60. Anyway, when I quoted him his response was:
"YOU NEED TO RAISE YOUR PRICES. I would get charged the same price at Foot Lion [for an 8inch cake]. I refuse to pay you so little when you are making me a custom cake and Food Lion (our local grocery store) would charge me the same amount and give me cardboard cake with no TLC put into it."
WOW! There is some hope..

Too bad all customers aren't so great. BTW we have Food Lions in my area, but they don't do fondant. Our FL is probably as bad as any grocery store mentioned on CC.

That's great. Good for you! I hope this served as a wake up call to raise your prices.
A while back a customer gave me a $25 tip for a cake. When I thanked her, she thanked me for the cake and said, "Look, you need to start charging more for your cakes." I was blown away. I thanked her for that comment because it helped give me the confidence to do just that.
There are some pretty cool customers out there!
A friend of a friend called me and asked how much for a german chocolate cake 1/2 sheet. I qoted her $60 which is about average. So then she tells me that she actually wants two 1/2 sheet cakes. I then say that its double. My DH walks by and says thats kinda expensive. After I hung up, I tear into him on how much time it takes and that this cake is actually more expensive since the frosting is homemade. Needless to say, she ordered the cake from WALMART!!!

Wow that's really nice ,,, Your cakes a very pretty . If you don't mind me asking how much did you charge for your cakes ? I just am a hobby baker but my Sisters friends that come to the parties have already asked me to do thiers and I say ok I'll do this as a gift and I just keep doing all my cakes as gifts and now I have stuck my foot in my mouth it's kinda like a word of mouth thing and I have so many cakes to do ny WOM that i need to start to charge alittle at least right ?
