I've never even thought about using the extruder for lettering that's a nice idea, I haven't really used royal yet think I prefare your idea to that.

AI find that if you add anything to make it more 'extrudable' it doesn't set hard enough to stand on its own so I have always handrolled pretty free-standing lettering.... but I did see a youtube vid where someone modift their extruder to work with a drill so I wonder if that would work.... or would it just wreck the shape disk..... might have to try this!

I don't normally add anything to mine just kneed it until it's warmed and it comes out easy. Though I would love to be a fly on the wall when you try that Grey :D

AThanks for the tips guys!

Gray it will be on the board flat so I will keep the less Trex idea in mind when I do standing lettering!

On another positive note, my snowflake cutters came when I was out! Yay! No I can procrastinate happily! :-D

AYeah! Might start tomorrow because I'm wait on a delivery of navy fondant to mix a few colours of sugarpaste for the cake. I like to let them stand overnight when I've played with them a bit so I can get cutting while my layers are baking!

ASo sorry to hear your news petite, I hope your friend is ok.

Kuushi, if I'm doing royal lettering that I'm worried about I pipe first in the colour of the board. That way, you can remove it if it's not right and redo it. Then I pipe over that with a slightly smaller tip in the colour I want. It makes it look like you've taken loads of extra effort too when in fact it makes it far less stressful. It also makes the lettering stand out which is nice. :-)

If I have to pipe straight on though I wrote what I want to on paper, then scribble over the back with non toxic pencil, then go over it again on the correct side straight onto the board, and I can then follow a perfect line. I will only do this on the board though - I don't like the idea of people eating graphite, even if it is miniscule amounts.

Think I've seen somewhere else on the forum that if you put the words "sugar" and "craft" together it blatts them out - is that what you were trying to say, Nanny?

I'm also looking into getting an extruder gun.  How hard do you find the red and black one to use, Nanny?

So sorry to hear about your friend, petitecat.  Sending my hugs your way too.

Wow Victoria that piping is lovely, beautiful cakes and biscuits  I had a small silver push extruder and it would nearly kill me trying to get SP through it, I got the green one same as the makins one on ebay for £8.50 and it is great and easy to use.

AThanks all, that lily is actually one of my really early ones from my course, but it's good to keep as a reference! Yes Roxy, essentially the twiddled wire sticks to the back of the petal. Once the wire is covered in gumpaste you keep it covered (so sticky) while making petals, then place it over the back of the petal and rub it on, using a bit of plastic in between your fingers and the wire & petal, so you don't stick to it :) Probably more long winded than using a veining board but it does seem to work, and it's how I learned so what I do LOL!

WOW Victoria, that's seriously great piping there, they are beautiful! Oooh I so want to get better at that, there's an RI PME class I want to do, but it's not until next Jan :(

Finally got my shopping done. Checkout lady didn't half give me and my 2kg of chocolate a look though ROFL!

Oh and I finally gave in a bought a large hemisphere pan for this tom & jerry cake....! Just hoping I can get the hang of it now LOL

ALovely Lilly Mel.

Beautiful cake Victoria, I love the cookies. I wouldn't have the patience. Doing things once on a big cake is one thing but doing it over and over in miniature would probably do my head in!

I'm taking notes on the extruder conversation, I'm thinking about getting one for a possible boxing ring cake in November.

My lace mat came today! :-D But no lace or knife. :-(

AVictoria, its beautiful.

I use mine a lot, but make sure you add enough trex, til like chewing easy to use then.

Me,, I have the large hemispherical tin, be careful with the instructions with it as mine came with 6 egg mix, that makes enough for 2 honestly!

Thanks for all the comments .  Kuuushi, it's all hand piping :D - I can see lots of imperfections, but am still fairly happy with the finished result

Mel, I'm wanting to do the RI course too (think I might have mentioned that before :P).  The place nearest to me does it before Christmas, but I keep forgetting to book onto the course... I'd better get going!

AOoh really Nanny? Ok will bear that in mind thank you! I do want it to rise up and have a bit of a dome on the top, would a 4-5 egg batch do do you think? I know it's been asked before as well but how do you line/grease it?

Thanks for explaining about the lilies Mel that sounds much easier than trying to push the wire into the petal itself.

AI used the Wilton cake release, leave it go told in the pan, came out fine, then the other time, I didn't use it, it stuck.

Well its up to you, I guess you could always make the 6 egg mix up see how much you need and make something else Mel.

AHey all. Manic day, so decided to skive off the school work now and have a bash at some of the cakey things I wanted to have a go at. So far I have my Mississippi Mud Cake in the oven and have made some modelling chocolate with real chocolate, not candy melts, gonna have a go at some milk chocolate ganache next based on your ideas from earlier. Might do some chocolate cupcakes too and practice my cupcake swirl piping...

So in summary, my caking break lasted three days... Lol.
