Petitecat that cake looks very stylish  - I can't see any tears just looking at the photo, but I've found Tesco SP soft too (it tends to tear rather than cut cleanly when I'm trying to cut it).  Don't think it needs a bigger flower personally - looks sophisticated just as is!

Tiddy - eek!  Exciting indeed :-D - now you need to try them out and show us pleeeeeeeeease (can you airbrush cake lace?)

I've also had a delivery - my powder colours have come!!!!!  Bouncing off the walls with excitement just looking at them...  oh I am going to have so much fun trying them out!  (and even better, they came in a bright pink box)

Chasingmytail I've just made some milk chocolate ganache according to your directions and put it on a cake, and it's worked much better - no oiliness - so thank you very much!

I think it's lovely in the grey, and in that size. If you want to cover the little bit of crazing on the right hand side (which incidentally, I could only see on the supersize image, and wouldn't have looked for if you hadn't mentioned it  ), what about a smaller anemone? If you want the design to stay simple, it would be less fussy than more dots (which look lovely btw). Also, bear in mind anyone who's not 'cakey' will see the overall design, not the imperfections that are only obvious to you.

Whenever I do wedding fairs I chat to planners and decorators - I've been told by more than one now that they have never seen a bride zone in on any perceived (by the baker!) issues with the cake, they just see the whole thing.

I'd go for it if I were you with fairs. Go to a few to get the feel of it, then take the plunge :) I hate talking to people (too shy), I'm awful with compliments (can't take them), but the fairs are good fun. And, despite making me feel awkward, it's a big ol' ego boost when people walk past and go 'wow'.

ANanny I think I love you ❤️

That cake is awesome. It turned out brilliant. I made it for the school cake sale and had to buy a a slice to try it, I was nearly sick when they only charged me 25p for it though :(. Should of at least be £1 a slice and really more but school cake sale and all that.

Could I trouble you for the measurements for an 8inch square. I'm trying my first square cake for my daughters holy communion eek

Bashini, it's not a book, they are wedding fair organisers. http://www.stylemepretty.com/little-black-book/ I think that's them but I'm not totally sure.

Siany, I'm making cakes for the summer fair fundraising at school. I'm manning my own cake table so I'll be in charge of the prices and I was thinking £1- 1.50 per slice of chocolate cake etc and 50p per cake pop. I'm hoping they won't find that too steep. I better contact the PTA!!

Lizzy, thanks for the info. I've not done any wedding cakes yet (just dummies) so I feel if brides were to look at my website they will see I've not got the experience. So I'm planning to make 2 wedding dummies, and told friends and family that I'm willing to make my first wedding cake for anyone at cost. Once I've got wedding cake photos on my site, I'll probably feel more confident about being a supplier at a wedding fair!

Siany, this is what I use,so helpful, but I do change it abit, if you look at the quantities for an 8" square, where it says 5 eggs I scale up to to the 6 egg mix and do it in 2 stages, that way I get a deeper sponge, I tend to do that most of the time now.

I feel your pain! I did the above for my kids' Christmas fair and my friend caught them pricing them at 30p each. One telling off from her later (she was on the PTA :) ) and they were up for £1.50 and sold out within 20 mins.

Every year I make something and every year they price it at less than the ingredients unless someone specifically says not to :(

AOoh I got a delivery today too - lots of nice shiny new cake tins from Lakeland just waiting to be christened.

Tiddy your minecraft cakes looks great, it almost makes me boggle eyed just looking at all of those squares.

Jean your cake looks lovely top I like how simple and elegant it looks. I can't see many mistakes but I'm only looking at a small pic. I'm sure non cake people wouldn't spot any but a second small flower like someone suggested would look nice too.

Petitecat I did add all of the icing sugar to my MMF but it was very warm the day I made mine so that could account for my needing it all. You did right to just add what you needed to. I used glucose in mine I just thinned it with a bit of water, I'm sure I did mention that to you when I PM'd you the other day but I can't remember. I was surprised at how much it made I was expecting a lot less. I think next time I might get a bottle of corn syrup off amazon and see how it is with that, if there is any difference. How did you find making it? I was surprised at how easy it was to make and that I actually managed to make my own fondant

AEvening all. :-)

So much to catch up on again!

Lovely cakes everyone. I don't think the flower is too small Jean,l, think its perfect.

Frenchiejo, that's a brilliant first cake, I never get my sp on with no imperfections, it's the thing I worry about most with every cake.

Jo Field, my cakes are all gifts, I understand how expensive it is when you're not making any money from them. Maybe you could ask for the cost of ingredients? My rule noe is if I choose to make someone a cake its a gift, if they ask me to make one I ask for ingredient cost. I still only make them for family and close friends though. For example my brother asked me to make a cake for his wife next month and he's paying me for ingredients but in all honesty I'd have made her one as a gift anyway. As for sugarpaste, I used to use Tescos and it wasn't too bad, I did get a bit of elephant skin though. I hate renshaws, not fussed on asda, only use Dr oetker if I've no choice and love satinice but it's way too expensive to use all the time. I bought some from sugarpaste direct and I love it! It doesn't work out much more than supermarket prices and I can roll it thinner and get it on the cake easier.

Natt, glad you're enjoying sunny porthcawl! Did anyone see the floods I Cwmbran on the news last night? I was caught up in them trying to find a chemist for my grandads prescription, the first two I went to were closed due to flooding so I had to go to town, just as they were evacuating asda! Traffic was horrendous, roads were closed, nightmare!

Hi guys, sorry I've no chance of ever catching up with all your posts!

Here is the finished cake:

A cascade of purple gumpaste butterflies.

All the tiers worked out really well (I made sure to sample a slice of each at the reception :-) ) and I was very pleased with the end result.  I used royal to adhere the butterflies and they stuck fast.

I was really annoyed though, that we forgot to bring the camera with us when setting up the cake, and by the time we got there for the reception, the hotel staff had moved the cake (completely disregarding my instructions on how to do it) and made a big dent right in the centre of the bottom tier.  My husband has photoshopped it out as best he can, but it was so disappointing to see that right on the most obvious place.

Also, they didn't pass on my information about the tiers being different flavours, so cut up loads of just the vanilla and only served that - and then lied to me about it when I informed them of the different flavours.  It was only once most people had already been past the buffet that they brought out a tray with some of the other flavours on it.  I was so disappointed.

The whole experience was a good learning curve - but I'm glad I don't have any more big cakes in the foreseeable future!
