Same here Nanny though when I did the ganache last week it was starting to set before I had finished smoothing it.
ANo, you don't need to as it firms up quite quickly. But I bake two days ahead. Bake, torte and fill one day and then ganache, cover and decorate the next day. And it's ready for pick up/ delivery.
ABrilliant, so need to change a few things then. Funny how we get something in our head and dont budge from it isn't it?
AYes indeed thanks chasingmytail think that would be a splendid thread if only I were a good at technology !!
ARoxylee was thinking this myself earlier about fondant spacers will check amazon !! Sounds like they could help me too!
AThanks everyone for commenting on my cake.
I wonder if maisie knows that one of her cakes is in the favourites? It's one from a while back so how does that work, if it's just appeared in favourites now?
They really helped me Jo. I have the little venice cake company ones which are 5mm for my cakes and some long plastic ones which are 3mm for the boards which I got from a cake decorating shop but I have seen them on amazon.
Sugarluva maybe someone was searching for a skylanders cake and added it to their favourites so then it appears in the favourites section.

Morning everyone :-)
Roxylee I have looked at the spacers and some say they are only good for small cakes, what do we think about the rolling pin ones ? I do have a large rolling pin....?
AJo, I do have the spacers and they help in keeping the thickness even, but I find it takes forever to roll out, ( maybe its something I'm doing tho) so now I just judge it, right or wrong not sure!
Morning all!
Jo I have read reviews about the rolling pin guides and some say they don't fit all rolling pins that's why I did't get them plus if you need to roll something bigger than your rolling pin you can not use them as they will leave lines in you SP.I have these ones

Jo that looks really good well done It survived the boot trip to I see. You should be really please with that for your first two tier cake.
AAw thats lovely Jo, turned out fine in then, you pleased? What decorations do you have to go on top?
Love the garden behind too!!
AHa thanks but that's the better side of the cake! It hasn't got in the boot yet but will be at 9.00 so will let you know, seems pretty solid though the royal icing has set like cement lol !
AThanks Nanny no this is just going to be gobbled up at work as tester cake mainly to test it won't fall apart on the journey, therefore no decoration!
My back garden needs a lot of attention but don't really get chance these days !
I to love the garden behind it. I think it turned out well, square cakes are harder to do I think that's why I've started practising lately. You co workers are gonna love you this morning
AJo that looks good I don't know why you were not brave enough to put it on yesterday it's great for your first 2 tier. I haven't tried a square cake yet but I've heard they're harder.
I think I need to get some spacers too as I'm hopeless at judging it. I also need a new rolling pin as mine isn't big enough at all.
AThat birdcage is stunning - I really want to have a go at one of those. And Jo - if that was one of my first attempts I'd be thrilled! It looks great!
AAw bless you, you did that for practise, well done you I thought it was for a party or someone.
Sugarluva I have this rolling pin and find it really good I am going to get the medium one later on as I have a mason cash one in the medium size and don't like it at all.I keep my rolling pin in a cardboard tube that you use for posting posers as it is to long to fit on my shelf, I just wrapped foil loosely around the rolling pin and popped it in the tube and now the foil stays in there when I get the rolling pin out.

AThanks everyone for your kind comments on my cake, yes this was just to test I could do a two tier before committing to doing my friends christening cake, I have learned loads for the real one so happy I did it as now hopefully the real one won't take so long and i won't make so many mistakes...? Well that's the theory !
AThey have the large PME rolling pins in TKMAX, slightly cheaper than the same one I bought in the Range, at £19.99, grrr, the Tkmax rolling pin was £15. By PME and exactly the same size etc.
AJo is that a SP ribbon around your board? You can actually sp patterned ribbons at around £3 but I made my own in the end, you buy the large impression mats with 6 sheets in them and use to cut your own ribbons, just an idea for you for next time.
ANo ribbon round board Nanny and the blue ribbon round cake was just some spare from cupboard, thanks for the tip ;-)
Sugarluva - beautiful cakes! You should be proud. Sorry - I know I have missed loads and will try to catch up - but apologies if I have forgotten somebody. You are all so chatty!
Nanny I need some advdice - I got a viola cutter the other day - however - I haven't been able to find a tutorial. As your DH is a horticulturalist - can you let me know if I can use the pansy tutorials? I wish I hadn't ordered it now. I saw some in the garden centre and thought they looked lovely. I was planning to try them for mum's birthday in June. I just wanted to put them on cupcakes but I think I might have to change to wired. Any advice welcome!
AThanks for the link roxy and I might have a look in tkmaxx next time I go nanny. It's been a while since I've been there I think I'm due a trip haha.
I meant to say, the little lacey looking boarder I put on the top and bottom of my birdcage was made using the lace mould I got from Lakeland last weekend. I didn't want a complete lace affect but I wanted a pattern so I just used it as an impression mat rather than a mould then I cut it out and cut it in half (so it had a flat side) and it came our really pretty. I think it would look nice used that way as a ribbon around a cake too. I will have to use it as a lace mould properly at some point but I'm happy it's dual purpose now haha
