Wondered if anyone has any idea how to get this colour but a bit more gold than bronze? Are there bronze spray cans I could mix with gold (from a can too)? I don't have an airbrush!

Teen daughter wants a snitch cake for her birthday!

Ok. Do you think if I started off with yellow fondant, then sprayed with bronze I'd get a more gold/bronze colour? Actually I'll just purchase the stuff and experiment! Sorry 'thinking out loud here'!!

Hi Jean - I don't think I would start with yellow - maybe try a beige?  Anyway - we recently used the PME pearl spray on some mini easter eggs and were very pleased with the result.

If I have more than one cake to do, which isn't often, yes. I put it in the freezer in fact. I just put the buttercream in airtight containers, and thaw the night before I need it. YOu can also store in the fridge- good for a couple of weeks.

AHello you busy, chatty people!

I've tried to catch up but there are literally pages and pages!!!

Welcome Tiddylicious. :-) I am Welsh too I am! Lovely cakes everyone, can't remember who made what sorry but I did look at yours bashini and I honestly can't see any bulges.

Upside down method- watched a youtube vid, scary! Colouring sugarpaste- I buy it ready coloured if I can, tried to make black once and got it to a purply grey before I gave up, tried to make red and I had to add so much colouring it made it unworkable so I went and bought some precoloured and mourned the passing of half a pot of gel. Lace- way beyond my capabilities sorry. You're all so clever, I feel like an imposter here sometimes!

I've probably missed loads, I will go back and check though. Thursday's a busy day for me, laundry delivery, meals on wheels, pension collecting and shopping for my grandad and auntie. Has anybody used the chocolate cigarellos from the chocolate trading co? I asked a few days ago but I think it got lost (or nobody has). I've got a vague memory that it was recommended about a thousand pages upthread, I've tried to find it but it's slow going. Anyway, I need some for a cake in June but the only ones I can find are 9.5-10cm and I don't think they'll be tall enough.

AI knew I'd miss loads! Tiddy,I'm surprised real wood is a no-no. I think I read somewhere that wood has natural antibacterial properties so it makes the best chopping boards. Jo, I freeze buttercream cos it doesn't last in the fridge- only cos my greedy lot can't leave it alone! And I always use salted butter in everything including buttercream.

unsalted for me and I find I don't need it. It brings out the sweetness of the sugar and my buttercream is sweet enough as it is!

I've only used them once and they were just too short, by about half an inch... I used fresh berries piled up around the bottom of each tier and that hid the gap but figured if I couldn't do that again I'd try using the broken ones cut to an inch high with a ribbon to hide the join...

Hi everyone :-) sorry I'm quiet these days life is a bit nuts! :-)

AThankyou Gray. :-) I've seen loads of photos and they don't look like short tiers but 9.5 cm is just short of 4 inches isn't it, I want to make mudcake and they're well over 4 inches but I don't want to waste any. I read somewhere someone used matchmakers cos they're cheaper (and longer) but I don't think they look as nice. I really want it to be nice cos this is the first cake I've made for a proper party.

You probably will Tiddy, it's addictive, I love this thread!

Maisie I was going to use them for my birthday cake last year but then when I worked out the cost to surround the cake I thought better of it.

I Think I'm going to have to have a look again and see if I can find any reasonable ones as I love the cake design I was going to do but its just too much.

Oh, and p.s  Hi Grey, missed you around here.  Hope you're well :)

AHi Siany, just replied to you on another thread. :-) I know it'll be expensive so I thought I'd do a bit of research (ask here) before I waste my money. I don't mind the expense if the cake ends up looking like I want it to ( sometimes they do, sometimes they really don't!) it's for my sister-in-laws 30th birthday party, my brother asked me to make it, he said he'll pay but it's going to be our present to her. Bit scary cos this is the first cake I've made that people I don't know will be seeing/ eating/ commenting on.

Exciting stuff Maisie! I was apprehensive about some of the cake flavours I'd chosen for my daughter's party. There were people there I didn't know, because it was a joint party with my friend's son. They told her the cakes were delish... thank goodness for that LOL.

You'll do great!

Another busy day!! Ok, Im going to fire off a load of replies, sorry if I cant remember who said what though!

Carrot cake - I use May Clee Cadmans (Maisie Fantasie) recipe and its lovely, really moist and its not got nuts in (I'm not a fan!), really lovely with a lemon buttercream but Im sure would be fab with cream cheese too!

Hi Tiddy, welcome to the thread :) Not sure about wooden floors, but I have a cat and the only thing I have to do according to my EHO is make sure shes shut out of the room when Im baking and decorating. Not sure about other EHO's, but mine were really lovely and would come out for an advisory visit before the official assessment, that way anything they picked up on I could sort before the actual check. Luckily I was all ok, so she assessed me there and then, but if you are worried (as I was!) then its worth asking? Good luck!

Roxy, fab cake! I've never used an airbrush but I may have to rethink that if I ever get my own cake room - not sure I could use one in our kitchen and not redecorate the walls LOL

Erm what else.....dowels - I use the hollow plastic ones, but not the straws as I've seen them buckle and it would freak me out LOL! The polydowels I get are really sturdy and come in a couple of sizes. I did use to use wood, but prefer plastic if I can get it.

Colouring paste - I actually mostly use precoloured, especially for darker colours. I will colour my own for more pastel shades, or mix precoloured with white or ivory. Same as Bashini Ive found the SP goes a bit funny if I've worked it loads while colouring so I dont risk it. But its a personal thing I think! :)

PME Bronze spray is lovely - used it on one of the wedding cakes in my photos if anyone wants to see the colour it comes out (on ivory paste) - the one with the dots and the roses? Its quite a pronounced bronze though, but I think PME do a couple of gold sprays which might work if you want something lighter?

And I only use unsalted butter :D

Think that covers most of it? ;D My plan for today sadly went a little awry as a delivery hasn't turned up (grr), but I've spent most of the day churning out cake lace, so its not been totally unproductive (Catsmum - the Serenity mat is soooo pretty you will love it!)

I can't find the recipe online, do you have a link to it at all?  I have to make it tomorrow so no time to wait for books to come unfortunately so I only have online options open.

Thanks

Hi all, my you've all been very chatty.

Bashini I have the Cassie Brown airbrush it is very small so doesn't take any space up and yes you can use any airbrush colours in it.I have so far used the ones  that came with it, the kroma colours and dinky doodles silver. If you decide to invest in one you can get a pack of 12 colours from The Craft Company for just under £30, they are big bottles so will last for ages. I also use rainbow dust metallic paint mixed with vodka in it so can get pearl sheen as well as other colours.

Thanks Jo and Mel,  I have cardboard boxes which I cover the table with and have one standing up which is folded so to make a type of booth and put another on top to stop the spray going all over the place, though I think I might buy a shower curtain or something to pin on the wall just in case any escapes. One place the spray does get is up your nose and when you blown your nose it is coloured lol.

I always use unsalted butter in buttercream and I freeze leftovers and use on cupcakes.

I always forget something. Cassie Brown was on the create and craft channel the other day showing her airbrush they have an offer on it but I think it might end today or tomorrow but I think you can watch some clips or the shows she did on their website.

Edited to add that I use Cointreau to soak the fruit in instead of rum etc, gives it an extra orangey zing! The Oz cake was this recipe :)

Roxy I know you get black bits up your nose in London but can't imagine the colours that could get up there with the airbrush! We can I get it did you say? Also has anyone on this thread got a kitchen aid? I have got one but need some advice ...

*stupid question alert*

What do you make the carrots out of on the top of a carrot cake? Is it sugarpaste or coloured frosting?
