AThank you all for your comments and tips, Gray!!

Barbara, yes, I think that's what I did. I don't know what it's called!! I was very impatient and started as soon as I fixed the wire. I should have let it go hard first. Because of that it came loose a few times. I've emailed the photos and they have decided to go for all roses in white and pink with filler flowers, which was on my original design. I am sooo glad they chose that!!!

AYep, it'll look lovely. I hope you show us photos too bashini. I've just ordered some 5 petal cutters, single petal cutters, a foam pad and some blossom dust. I can't wait for them to come, I paid extra postage so they'll be here by tuesday. :-)

AOh Maisie you are definitely hooked!,,, Delivered two cakes this weekend. Both to happy customers. One easy and one more complicated but both fulfilled the brief. Now eyes down for the wedding cake on 25th. Many sleepless nights ahead I''m sure.

AOh Maisie, you did that without any help from me, I havn't bought anything for days, you've taken over from me in that department,ha ha. I love making roses and paid for some private tuition last yr when I had to make a cake or a vicars wedding.

Bashini, have you ever made pansies? I have an order for a cake and she's 80,the daughter wants some pretty flowers (loves pansies) I have a mould do you think I could make them with that or separate petals and paint the faces?

ACatsmum, its a fab feeling isn't it? The person I made the Steelworks cake for was delighted with his and probably cos it was personal to him, made it so much more special.

What are you doing for your wedding cake? I have one but not til Dec 20th, she wants a lot of xmas shrubbery between her layers which i wasn't comfortable doing, but we worked it out and I'm making xmas roses, ivy berries etc.

AYes I'm well and truly hooked! I'd love to see your cakes catsmum. :-) It is sort of your fault nanny, you showed us your cake with roses on too remember! I can't afford to pay for lessons but I don't need to with you lovely lot on here.:-) I'm making a cake for my auntie this week (if my oven's fixed!), she'll be 87 and she loves flowers. I hope my cutters come in time to have a go for her cake. I bet you're looking forward to the christmas wedding cake nanny, I love all things christmas.

Well I've been busy directing chocolate shoe making this afternoon!  While you've all been making bunnies' backsides (they are all so cute by the way) my daughter produced this:

*

She wants to add a bow or something - so not quite finished.  Seems I have a lot to live up to now!  We have another two to do by Easter Sunday - will take some final pics when all done.

Loved the flowers Bashini ;)

Thanks for the compliment Sugarluva - I think so too.  She used to sit by me from when she was tiny and watched everything I did when I had an order.  Here's my surprise cake she did for my birthday last year (and I realise now that you will all know how old I am - but I am rather proud of her so, what the heck!):

When it was cut, it was three different coloured layers.  Not bad for a student.

AThanks everyone I sure will post the pictures. :)

Gray, this wedding cake I am doing has vases as separators and I stumble upon a thread that you suggested using small drums underneath the board so that it slots nicely into the vase. I thought that was really clever. So thank you!! :)

Barbara, I never have made pansies. I think if you can get single petal cutter and veiner and wired them, it will give you more realistic finish. And then colour them. That's what I am going to do next time when I make hydrangeas. :)

Maisie, I was like that when I started baking. I don't blame you!!!

Thanks Maisie - I am lucky - I know it.  I was a latecomer to motherhood and it's fantastic for me to work with her.  We both teach each other - except I have no hope of doing anything close to what she does - she's studying mechanical engineering at university!

Nanny - haha!  Love it.  We are only as old as we feel!

Night everyone - proper work tomorrow :(

I have recently become a Nanny (my daughter is 20 I had her at 16). I am only 36? 37? 36? Oh I don't know which lol I'm one of those two haha but everyone has been calling me nanny, to rub it in lol, and now my 2 year old son has taken to calling me nanny to :/

I have spent the evening writing up sampling notes for hot fondant and making chocolate and Madeira cakes. It's much less fun than actually making them. Though my nemesis and I go head to head in the morning once again. The Madeira and I shall do battle once agin lol

Oh brilliant, I'm pleased it's helpful :-) I bought a 4 tier stand ages ago that's metal rings supported only on one side and once the cakes are on it the flippin' thing bounces like Zebedee at a pogo festival when people walk by!! So I was terrified the cakes would slide off - the extra drums saved me so much worry!

....I just realised something.... no cakes for a month means I have no excuse not to do last years accounts now!!!! :-(

Hi all, its me- cakejeanie. I am going to use this new profile from now on. After emails and research I got nowhere with closing my old account, so opted to open a new one.

Dayscakes, is your daughter going to take over your cake empire when you retire? She's fabulous! My daughter (soon to be 16) made some fondant vinyl records on top of cupcakes for a friend the other day. She said she'd rather bake cakes, but not keen on the fondant side of things. She wants to be a barrister some day so maybe its just as well lol

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one struggling to refrain from purchasing cake tools. I want lace molds- they are beautiful :)

Hi Petitecat - going to find this hard to remember your new name but keep posting and I'm sure I'll get it.  Thanks for the nice comments.  Yes - she's already planning things for our cake empire - we have a business name and a couple of dummy websites which we are nursing.  She graduates next year (she's going to be an MEng!) and said that there's a lot of research to support the fact that if you are going to start up a business, the best time to do so is when you are newly graduated.  However, my husband was rather hoping that after all this time she would be tinkering with an airplane engine instead!  Lol.  We'll see.....

I got some lace moulds from Karen Davies - they are to die for.....  I bought these knitted effect ones and they are so cute - I cannot wait to use them.

Take my hat off to you Siany!  I didn't become a mum until I was 37.  May I ask what you don't like about Madeira cake?

AMorning all .:-) What's a "MEng" Kathy? Petitecat, I'll have trouble remembering who you are too! I'll get there eventually though! Siany I'm 41 next month so can I pretend to be a similar age to you please? I've got a 19 year old son and a toddler (she's 14 but disabled so she's still a toddler really). No grandchildren of my own but my husband's got 4, all boys, all get their birthday cake orders in nice and early!

AWhy I don't like to eat it or why I don't like to make it?

I'll answer both lol

It never works when I make it. It's always either raw, over baked, sinks or domes and cracks. The only time it's worked ok was when I coloured it grey for College and who wants to eat grey cake (not yours Gray, your cakes are awesomeness). Ah well it's in the oven and I've rejigged the temp and time again and bought an oven thermometer. We'll see. I'm not even looking till it's been in two hours.

I don't like to eat it as I find if a but heavy and dry. But it's good for carving and covering so I need to master it.

MEng is mechanical engineering I think.

Maisie we are similar ages lol
