Great Oz cakes Mel and Natt. Like I said they are calling me to get my figures out of the storage box and on to a cake.

Mel were the figures edible images?

Nannycook I love the cupcakes and especially the banner - I would never have thought of putting that on - it really makes a difference.  The other cake is beautiful and the flowers are perfect.

Maisie - may I ask what other cutters you got?  I was going through my toolbox last week and some of them I haven't a clue what they are any more - just shows how long ago I did flowers!  I am after suggestions for decent veiners too as I realised that I had lost my veiners (or lent them to somebody) and I had to improvise on the tiny rose leaves on my pink cupcakes.

Natt - we are all waiting to see the pics!

Bashini - thanks for the advice on Satinice.  I have never used Covapaste - when I went to college for cake dec in the early 80s (yes a very long time ago) Covapaste was frowned upon by our teacher as being 'cheap and nasty' (her words).  However, I might try to see if I can get some since a few of you use it.

APoor natt! I've had two in quick succession that have had me tearing my hair out, I'm glad to have none to do for a while now. Just out of interest everyone, when you make cakes for a living/sell them does it become a chore? I can't imagine the stress and worry of paying customers, it would stop me enjoying it I think. Kathy- without checking I think they were just called daisy cutters. They're just 4 different sized plunger cutters in a pack, not fancy at all but different to what I've already got. £1.09 fron ebay, bargain! While I'm here, I've been looking online (too lazy to go traipsing round the shops!) and narrowed my cake tin choice down to Invicta and PME. They're similar prices but the Invicta looks like it has a seam down it and the PME doesn't. Would it make any difference?

AHi all,

Wow it's been really busy on here.

Nanny cook I love the flowers. I love flowers a at the moment as I'm leaning to do them. My next assessment in college is tea fancies, 4 cubic centimetres...decorated *eek*. I'm doing mad hatter/ Alice in wonderland theme so lots of roses in my future.

I have jut got some paste from sugarpaste direct and I have to say I like it. I think you have to work reasonably quickly (bare in mind I'm training so not pro speed) as it could elephant skin but it rolls out nicely and covers well. I think I prefer it over covapaste as it's just slightly firmer? Not by much just enough to make it a but more forgiving.

This was my college cake this week and it spd paste on it. I coloured it which was also fine.

Please excuse typos, been up since 2am with my poorly two year old :(

AMaisie - I recently bought an invicta tin (only 6" mind) and I love it, its my new favourite tin. As far as caking becoming a chore, yes and no. Sometimes (like cakes that won't seem to come together properly!) I think why am I doing this?! But when stuff works out its really satisfying!

ADayscakes,

I saw on the white whale thread your nemesis is chocolate cake. I use this recipe http://www.lindyscakes.co.uk/2011/02/02/lindys-chocolate-fudge-cake-recipe/

I have never had a failure with this recipe.

You may have already tried it but I thought I would share just in case.

AThanks ladies, Invicta it is then! By the way bashini it's a round one I want, just to be awkward! That's a lovely cake siany, I want to practice flowers more, never seem to find time tho. Kathy you should try the recipe in sianys link, or the mud cake one from the same site, It's (the mud cake) the one I just tried and it's my new favourite cake! I made it last saturday and it still tastes fresh today. Delicious with ganache, you should try that too. it's easy, honestly. And if I can do it anyone can! Couldn't get it smooth mind but that's another story!

AThe cake under that paste is the chic fudge cake recipe. It's my go to recipe for a decent rich moist chocolate cake. I use sainsbury chocolate in it and it's always lovely.

AI wish I had time to attempt flowers. I've never been asked to make a cake with them on but they look very fiddly so never really had a practise with them either. I will do one day.

I was actually coming on to ask a question of the people who don't sell their cakes and only bake for family and friends. I don't have a certified kitchen or anything like that because this is just a hobby and people only ever pay me the cost of ingredients if they ask me to make them a cake - but my question was where do you draw the line between family and friends and friends of friends etc? For example I made a baby shower cake a whole ago and someone from the party wanted cupcakes making. I kind of knew that person so agreed and did her party cupcakes. I didn't attend that second party but then someone from that party asked for a cake. I do not know this person at all so I can't exactly say she's a friend. I wouldn't mind making the cake but I don't want to be crossing the line between baking for a hobby and baking to sell without having all of paperwork in place first which I am completely not ready for yet.

Anyway sorry that was a bit waffly but I was just wondering what all of you non-pro bakers do?

AThanks bashini, I was a bit concerned it might leave an indent in the cake. I'm sure nobody would buy them if it was a problem though would they.

Ok ladies, I have waiting for 2 of the cakes to be collected before I finish working on the last cake (which is for tomorrow.) So here is the 3 I have done so far!

Cat's birthday cake - I have done cats before, I didn't like making them then, I don't like making them now. Only dog people from now on!! lol.

Vanilla Sponge with fondant cats

Petrol station cake - This is the one that drove me crazy, the roof is made from a cake board covered in flowerpaste, the sides are flower paste and the whole this is held together with chocolate.
Vanilla sponge, fondant and gumpaste decorations.

Candy Crush - This one is my favourite of the week.
Vanilla sponge with fondant decoration

Maisie - my Invicta one is round, it's fabulous! The seam makes no difference. My local sugar craft shop has been renting out the same Invicta tins for 20 years and they are still going strong.

Random question - does anyone know why the single word of sugar craft is not allowed on the site??

AMaisie, I haven't tried it yet. I will probably give it a go over Easter as I need a good carving cake for my college assessment.

Sugarluva why don't you get the paperwork in place so you're covered if you do want to do some that are not directly related/friends?

ASugarluva- I would say that's too far removed. I understand the urge to say yes if it's something you'd like to have a go at mind. It is hard. The cake I did wednesday was for my stepsons best friend. He asked me to make it and paid what it cost to make it. I agreed cos he said he'd rather me make his friend one tgan have one for his own birthday. I won't do it again though, I have to draw a line somewhere, my family is huge and keeps me busy enough!

AMaisie, no indents at all. Even if you get any, you are going to cover it and no one can see it....:) and I line the whole tin and not only the bottom. :)

Natt, your cakes are brilliant!!! Love the petrol station cake the most!!!:)

Sugarluva, if you are doing cakes for your friend's friend and charging just for the ingredients, I would suggest that you at least get your Food Hygiene course..:-)

AThanks everyone. I am reluctant to get for several reasons: 1. We have a dog and I'm not sure if this would affect it (though he's never allowed in the kitchen) 2. We rent our house so there aren't really many changes we can make to the kitchen. 3. I already own and run my own business and didn't want this to be classed as a second business because I really don't make any money from it. I know that just by having the certificate wouldn't necessarily mean I have to make it a business but wouldn't want anyone to think anything dodgy was going on haha. Maybe I should look into it a little more though...

Natt - love your cakes as always. I really like the cat one the most!
