ABarbara, I don't think it's go away as you have already covered the cake in fondant? If you haven't done that, you could trim it off with a sharp knife. This is the reason I don't cover my cakes as soon as I've filled it. Is this the castle cake?

Mel, I wish I had a huge oven!!! I had to bake 4 x 9" cakes and then put them together. :)

I am not sure whether they let me post it anywhere. I have to check with them first.

Here's the bicycle cake from today (best viewed whilst humming Queens 'Bicycle Race', which I did most of the morning!)

AHi guys! I'm not busy but I'm exhausted just listening to you all! Will you all post photo's pleeeeeease? I'd love to see what you've all made. I have a terrible problem with bulge that won't go away too Nanny, doesn't matter how much I breathe in! I'm sure it'll be fine and even if it's still there won't you be able to disguise it? I saw my friend I made the gluten free cake for today, her daughter cried when she got up on her birthday and saw her cake! I was chuffed I have to say. She said the sponge was delicious, it lasted 4 days and the last bit was still as lovely as the first. They were picking the icing off the board when all the cake was gone. I've got cupcakes to make for mothers day (with my pretty flowers from my new hydrangea cutter), a skylanders cake for the 1st and another giant cupcake for the 3rd. That's a lot in 6 days for me, I don't know how you all do it!

ABarbara, didn't you see the bulge before you cover it? I never have used the spaces, never got a grip of it!!! Maybe your fondant was a bit thick? I always pipe a dam around the edge of each layer with ganache. As the ganache is thicker, it holds up perfectly.

Mel, you bike is fantastic!!! Ever thought of doing a tutorial?

Maisie, didn't we all tell you that it's beautiful !!!

AAw yay Maisie, so glad the GF cake was a hit! Must be fab to know it was such a hit after all the worry! :)

The bike wasn't too bad actually, I followed a tutorial I found online and it was a little fiddly in places (sticking together the pedal!) but actually went better than I thought it would. The bike took a few days in total but that was mostly in drying time to let all the bits set up properly.

AThats it though,I didn't have a bulge, its only when I put the fondant I got a bulge, this was just buttercream and jam, looking at it it looks like trapped air, but I've put a pin in and smooth it out, not happy. What if I post you all a pic and tell me what you think?

AHmm bit hard to tell. There's nothing jumping out that's too bad but then that's not a bad thing? If you are still worried though, Id pin prick the area again, smooth with smoothers and leave the pin hole open for now rather than seal it. If you can cover it with decoration etc tomorrow, then it will allow the air bubble an escape route overnight so hopefully the air bubble bump doesn't get any bigger?

The worry I'd have is that if you leave it and then try and smooth the sugar paste again tomorrow, it might crack a little as the outside will have set up?

ANanny I have never managed to get fondant on a cake without something being wrong with it! Never, not once. I just cover it up and hope nobody notices. I really don't think it's as bad as you think it is, honestly. I'm off to bed now but I'll look in in the morning to see how you're getting on. G'nite all.

I have actually just sat down Girlies, my castle is iced and very pink but no where near finished, my lemon number 1 is crumbcoated and sitting in the fridge, will start on the the 42 cupcakes first thing, then the mothers day cake will be done on Sat night, are you all exhausted now?

Welcome Sian, hope you like our funny little family!!

Thanks Nanny - not a long time really despite never having done them before - I was watching Midsummer Murders the other night whilst doing them - turned out it was a repeat so I was just listening and moulding! ;)  It was quite quiet at work - everyone's using up their holiday before the end of the holiday year.  So I packed my little boxes with colour, took my brushes and painted them in half an hour.  Got to make the cupcakes today - that'll be interesting as I don't really "do" cupcakes.  Got inspired after doing a charity bake in work last Christmas and I won but not in the category I entered.  Lol.  I entered best decorated but won best taste!  So I thought I might have another go.

I know that feeling of being exhausted.  When I was doing cakes a lot, it was either famine or feast - nothing for weeks and then lots all come along at once.

Looking forward to some pics of the castle!

Kathy

AMorning all. :-) Nanny I'm so glad it looks better this morning! It looked fine to me last night but I know how it feels to be unhappy about something or to see something wrong that no-one else can see. I love your board too, covering boards is my latest new thing to learn, never did it when I started but doesn't it make such a difference to the overall look!

Nanny - I couldn't see any bump in the photo - I think you are being a bit hard on yourself.  I think the real secret of cake decorating is hiding mistakes anyway.  It is going to be lovely and like Maisie cannot wait to see the finished product.  I am going to get one of those mats now - you have all cost me a fortune on this thread!

I've missed so much!!

Mel -  I LOVE the bicycle! It's so perfect!

Nanny - I can't see a bulge in your cake photo, HOWEVER I know exactly how it feels to be able to see something irritating and not be able to fix it so I am satisfied with how it is. I look forward to seeing your cakes from this week though!

And as per Maisie's request, pictures of this week's cakes. I still need to do something for mother's day, but they are baked and ready to go just need decorating.

AHi,

I love that bicycle, really really good.

Almost had my first cake disaster yesterday, making a pizza cake and I wasn't happy with the colour of the 'base' sugarpaste but thought it would be ok when finished. Put the ring of sugarpaste on for the 'stuffed crust' and oh my, it looked like a giant pork pie and nothing like pizza. I went out for a couple of hours and when I came back I managed to fix it. Still not 100% happy but At least it's not a giant pork pie lol

Edited to add I am really happy with how the cake board turned out though :)

Natt - superb cakes - I absolutely love Tigger anyway - so anything with him on it will appeal to me lol.  Can I ask if you dreamed up the beach hut or did they ask you for it?  I really like it.

Siany - you made me laugh about the pork pie.  I think the pizza is really authentic looking.  It's good to have a breather.  I am not great at "food" cakes - I did a spaghetti bolognese one time for a friend's son.  She liked it but it messed with my head and I was never happy with it.

AHi Siany, love your cake, is it only me or does everyone love cakes that look like other food?! Don't think of it as a cake diasaster, think of as you've learnt something new, when someone asks you for a pork pie cake now you can say " yep, I can do that, no problem! Hi natt, I love, love, love your beach cake! It's brilliant, were the waves difficult to do? I'm seeing ruffle cakes everywhere, I think I could do a buttercream one but the fondant ones look nicer(and more difficult!) The beach cake is my fave but I love the board on the tigger cake. I'm a bit obsessed with boards at the mo! How're you doing Nanny?
