AHello. Wad wondering if anyone can help me find cheap cigarellos. They seem to be extremely expensive.

ABy cigarellos I'm assuming you mean the long, round wafers with chocolate in the middle? I get mine from Home bargains, 89p a tin. Tesco sells Askeys ice cream ones but they're not very tall, Amazon also sell a couple of brands but they're very expensive and again, not very tall. The ones in Home bargains are called Redondo, in a red tin in the biscuit aisle btw.

AMe too, I couldn't find the chocolate ones, had to make do with wafers.

Hi, they are quite expensive. The Craft Company and Design A Cake are more or less the same price. You can get 500g (70 cigarillos) for less than £10. But Design A cake ones are not good quality.

Thanks very much. Someone mentioned home bargains and I have been calling them asking if they have cigarellos. Obviously they couldn't find them ad the name is different. Will try them today.

AHi, Maisie, Covapaste is nut free too. Just checked with them. :)

AThankyou :-) Went to Asda goday, their own brand may contain nuts but the Dr Oetker doesn't say whether it does or not. I think I'll give Covapaste a go, I've been wanting to try it anyway. Thanks everyone.

Yes they are expensive but look extremely effective so need to be priced correctly.  This is one I did for a friend 15cm diameter with fruits.

You wont find cigarellos on the high street I'm afraid.

I'm doing a wedding cake soon and have decided to try Covapaste.  This is a tall narrow cake 15cm  so around 8" high- I want to know how hard it is to cover a tall cake with sugarpaste without having a big lump of it on the base.  Its a plain cake a bit worried about not getting a mass of paste towards the bottom.  I was considering doing the sides and top in separate pieces. Any ideas please?

AWill you be able to hide the seam? I think that would be harder but I've never tried.

I did a double height cake for a good friend of mine. It was just a 6" round but 7"-8" high. I used ganache to cover the cake. I covered it all in one. It is quite hard but I was happy with the result. There are lots of videos on ganaching and covering cakes on YouTube. 

AHi chaingmytail, I covered a bird cage the other week which tall and I covered it all in one, turned out fab, was pleased with it, I also use covapaste, love it.

AMorning all. I'm having a bit of a nightmare with this gluten free, nut free cake. I just went to order some Covapaste but in the ingredient list it said may contain nuts (or words to that effect). Having looked at Dr Oetkers yesterday with no reference to nuts at all I had a look at the FSA website to see if labels must state if they may contain nuts. (And I'm still none the wiser actually!) Anyway, I wanted to let you all know that I read that the food labelling laws are changing on 13/12/14. Apparently there will be no more allergy advice/warnings in a seperate place to the ingredients. Apologies if you already knew this, have a little look when you have five if you didn't. I'll start a new thread later with it's own title, can't now, I'm on my phone. Just wanted to let you all know. :-)

AHi Maisie, I personally don't offer nut free cakes. But if any of my customers request it I clearly say that I DO NOT GUARANTEE that it's nut free because I use nuts for fruit cakes. And if they are ok with it, I get them to sign the order form and I wash the equipments from hot water before I start making the cake. And I think I have used Cova paste for a nut free cake long time ago. Thats why I emailed them to confirm it. And it's gluten free too. If you not sure about Covapaste why don't you buy satin ice?

AHi Bashini, I wanted to go with Covapaste because it's so much cheaper than Satinice. I looked on ebay, a seller called Wedding Acrylics. It lists the ingredients and at the end says "produced in a facility that handles nuts". They might have it wrong or they themselves might handle nuts, I don't know but it's starting to do my head in now! I'm thinking about just going with buttercream tbh. It won't look as pretty but whatever it looks like it'll be special for the birthday girl cos it's a cake and she never has one. I made a fruitcake yesterday (for the 20th), gluten and nut free cake I'll be making on the 21st. That will give me plenty of time to scrub my kitchen and equipment inbetween. Birthday girls mam said normal household cleaning is enough and she knows I make fruitcakes. I'm not selling it to her, she's a friend but I still don't want to make anybody ill. I'm waffling now (cos I'm stressed!) so I'll shut up I think. Thanks Bashini. :-)

Maybe wedding acrylics wants to cover their back, that's why they have put it like that on their website. I never have bought it from them as they use to specialize in acrylic stuff. The only place I have bought Covapaste is from Design A Cake and they haven't mention anything like that on their website.

AThankyou both. :-) I've had a word with myself (and the birthday girls mam!), i've calmed down and feel much better! I've ordered Covapaste but not from wedding acrylics, like you said Bashini they might just be covering themselves or they might handle nuts themselves. The birthday girls mam said they have to say on the packaging if a product may/does contain nuts so as long as it doesn't I can use it. I reckon she should know better than most shouldn't she? I've got some Satinice gum paste here so I might make some flowers etc with that while I'm waiting for the Covapaste to arrive. Thanks again everyone, I've done my own head in so I can't imagine how you feel. :-)

Tracey's Cakes are another excellent source of cigarellos. Not cheap but lovely quality.

AYou can get 700g (140pcs) from town and country fine foods (min spend £80 for my area) for £14.43.

You can get 500g from hb ingredients for £4.85 but on the website they only show dark chocolate. They have a £10 delivery charge (free over £200).

ASorry natt12321 but I laughed out loud when I read that! Only because it was so familiar mind, if I'd read it this morning I'd have been crying! I agree with your last paragraph too btw.
