I went and entered for the first time. Catagory C the iced celebration cake with spray of wired flowers. I did not win though as I got disqualified for having the wrong size board. I was totally gutted as I made the cake for my mum who has sadly passed away. I still made her cake though and entered it in her memory. With regards to the sizing of the board I found out from the judges that a hexagonal board is measured from point to point and not side to side. An easy mistake for me as a beginner but the woman in the shop should have known better , afterall she has been making cakes for the best part of 35 years! I was very upset as you can imagine. My cake is on the site its the pind and white hexagonal cake with a spray of lilly and roses in the birthday cake section.

Welldone on your Bronze. I saw your cake there it was lovely you should be very proud. x

Hi! I'm very new here so forgive me if I'm a bit wobbly! I'm Kaya! Only really bake at home and I'm no where nearas good as anyone here but just looking for tips, hints and advice really. I have NO idea how to post threads with my questions, icon_sad.gif

Hi Tracie I loved your cake, such a shame you don't get placed its really cute and clean. Did u ask the judges if you would have placed if u didn't have the board problem?


Hi Kaya, welcome to the addictive world of cake central!! If you are in the uk probably best to ask questions here as the Americans do some things differently and have different hygiene laws etc. ask away.


My cake got upgraded to a silver on Saturday as the judges "thought it was too good for a bronze" was i giddy with excitement when I found out! Cake is now sat in my lounge as I can't bear to do anything with it!

Lol if that was me I would probably have it set up in a glass display case in the centre of the room with as spotlight on it.(Just Kidding)

WOW! your cake was fab and it deserved the silver. The cake next to yours with the black and red stripes was made by one of my students. He got a merit and was over the moom. My other two students also won Silver for the cottage cake in the novelty class and bronze for the under 18 class with a chefs kitchen. I was so proud of them.

I need to do a cake for someone who is part of the Grenadier Guards (the people that guard Buckingham Palace... think beefeaters). I have no idea what to do :S I don't want to just do the hat because I think that will look silly. Anyone got any ideas? I only want to do an 8" round or square as it's for a friend who's I'm not charging.

How about in the colours with the logo on it similar to the picture of the coaster on this link.
This golden ball with feathers thing came up a lot on google search.

Hi lisapeps, just an idea how about getting a template of the guard and cutting out the template on frosting sheets, hand painting them to attach around the outside of the cake - like they are all guarding the cake, put their logo on the top of the cake

I don't know about the logo because like in any military/ government groups the logos are different for each regiment and I'm not sure which he belongs to. I was thinking of doing an 8" on the bottom and decorate it like the red jacket and then do a double height 4" decorated like the hat. What do you think? I know it's more cake but 2 x 4" isn't a lot of hassle...

Hi Guys

Just a quickine to say hello....hello!!

I'm Claire, based in Brignton and so pleased I've found this forum....it's amazing, so much info and amazing inspiration from some amazing bakers/decorators.

Am amazed there isn't a UK version....but this thread is great, albeit a very long one...am determined to work my way through it all to get as much advice and help as possible, am only on page 4 at the mo so wish me luck!!

Hiya, I don't have a specific recipe for it, just experimenting really.....just normal vanilla sponge with added strawberries (blended first with hand held blender, still chunky, not puree) 100 - 150g, just added at the end once batter is fully mixed.

Just adding vanilla and some icing sugar to whipped double cream...with half a strawb on top.

Will also add some strawberry jam as a filling for half of them, see if that isn't too sickly sweet.
