No problem! icon_smile.gif They are very easy to use. If you want to get a shine on them, you have to dust the mould with lustre dust before putting the paste on top. I think you get an instruction paper with it. icon_smile.gif

Hello again, I'm having a bit of a wobble after being told my quote was too expensive and wanted to see what others would charge for something similar if that is ok?

They wanted a cake in the shape of sonic the hedgehog. It was for family and a few friends so I suggested a 6 inch cake for the head bit and then the spikes would be something like rice krispie treats. This was for a chocolate sponge shaped as sonic's head. How much would you charge for something like that?

Thank you, its the first time its really been a problem, I've had people tell me my prices are too cheap and now I've had this too so not sure what to think! x

Hi emma, were you going to do just the head? If so, I am guessing between £65-£90? I am not too sure about this as I don't like doing carved cakes myself. I also sometimes give quotes and when I am doing the cake only I realise how less I have quoted! icon_sad.gificon_confused.gif So frustrating when that happens....

Thanks for your reply and sorry I didn't make that clear did I, yes I was going to do just the head not his body too.

I'll keep an eye out for your cake LisaPeps icon_smile.gif

DH is coming with me and we're landing at 7.30 and flying out at 7.00pm so I'll try to pick up a few free demos along the way. I've been saving all my cake profits for a while to spend here ... can't wait!

Hi Emma no worries, I've done a few carved cakes, they are very hard and time consuming so make sure you charge adequately for time and skill. I would probably charge £65-75 for a 6" like this. HTH icon_smile.gif

Thanks for your replies, I've only just started my business and am finding pricing tricky, especially because I'm often quite slow when its something new and can't charge for all my time. I quoted her £32 which is way off what you both said so I need to look at my pricing and she needs to realise she was getting a bargain! I guess its something I need to get used to really, I don't think some people realise how much times goes into these cakes and expect to able to pay the same price as you would at Tescos. Thanks again for all the replies.

I think pricing i really hard at times, it depends on where you live, how much time it takes etc. I hope you get it sorted. believe me as you see from previous i get it wrong too

Hi ladies me again, has anyone experience of ivory on ivory? I know Bashini you have done the lace and I wanted to do the cake ivory with the ivory lace on top but worried about the colour matching. wanted to do a kind of mink coloured ribbon round each tier so thought if I did a mink coloured cake it wouldn't work and was best to stick to ivory on ivory and the contrast with my ribbon? However i've mixed up ivory RI before to pipe beading and flower paste and been really difficult on the match.. any suggestions anyone please?

Hi Rosie.. oh that's a lovely cake! Is it a pain to get the 2 colours matched.. i'm gonna need to match RI and the gumpaste - nothing worse than too many shades!

I used a little caramel in the flowerpaste and I mananged to get an exact match but I can't Help you with the RI I am afraid.
I think it will be a case of try and see. In theory I don't see why you shouldn't get a good match as they are both made of the same basic ingredients. If you colour in natural daylight you may have good results.
Sorry I cant be of more help.

Hi Rosie, thank you so much you've been a help. I did over use the caramel once on RI it colours so quickly it's just going to be a very gentle process on that one icon_biggrin.gif

In case anyone wanted to get festive with Halloween approaching... Aldi have skull and pumpkin cake pans on sale for £1.99 each. They've also got marzipan and regalice as specials but I don't know how much they were.

Also, forgot to add that Morrisons have a sale on their bakeware. They have baking trays which are like £3.40/each so £1.70 when half price, which make really good cake lifters... better than paying the £10+ the wilton and nordicware ones cost.

Just thought I'd let you all know that I have been dabbling in a bit of blown/pulled sugar. I managed to blow my first few sugar bubbles today icon_smile.gif My sugar pump and my heat lamp are all DIY/home made so if anyone wants the information on how to do it and where to get the stuff from let me know. My dads next task is to make me a sugar warming box icon_biggrin.gif

Ooo this all sounds really interesting. Always like to see new stuff. How did it all go?

I'm having a nightmare with these lace moulds. Seriously I cannot get a single one out without a ragged edge. It says roll over the top of the top lace piece and then pull excess away.. mmm just stretches and mess and the top mould moves so much! I am using flower paste is that a mistake do you know? I know Bashini and Rosiepan have alo used it so any tips please. I have a 4 tier to do tomorrow - well thankfully only 2 tiers of it icon_sad.gif thank you icon_smile.gif

Hi allabout, when I use the lace mould, I like mine with a shine. so I dust the mould with lustre dust and put the rolled flower paste ( I use flower paste too! icon_smile.gif )and put the other part icon_redface.gif of the mould on top. Then using my small rolling pin, pushing down go over it quite a few times. This should cut the excess past to the shape of the lace (hope it make sence). Take the top off slowly and then peal the paste. It should come out easily as it is already dusted.

Hi Bashini, what lustre dust do you use? I can only find some white satin and mother of pearl, lord knows whats happened to half my dusts!!! I was doing this just when I rolled it kinda moved around and didn't peel away clean.. it kinda stretched and frayed if that makes sense? I so got to get this done today icon_sad.gif Cake nightmare week not helped by wedding fayre prep! thank u icon_smile.gif

I use arl white or Snowflake lustre dusts from sugarflair. icon_smile.gif

When you roll on it, make sure you hold the mould from one hand. Do the top first, holding the bottom part. Then hold the top part and roll on the bottom part. Then do the edges. icon_smile.gif

Hello everyone, I have been coming on cake central for a few years now, mainly looking for inspiration, ideas, advice and information and its been great. But its even better now I have found this uk forum!

Anyway, I am on the look out (and i know this is a bit early) for a tasty christmas cupcake recipe? One which perhaps includes the sweet mincemeat you get in mincepies?

Anyone got any good ones??

look forward to hearing from anyone with any ideas,
kim x

Hello,

I am based in Chingford, Essex. It's a bit further down but I can make the cake if your friend doesn't mind picking it up. If you wish to discuss, please email: [email protected]

Yea went pretty good, the bubbles are easy to make. I made a bird but I can't decide whether it looks more like a fish with feathers. I think I'll add more feathers and then post a pic.
