I really must stop googling cakes in my lunch break.

Kathy

Well you remember my friend who was making her wedding cake, she got help from a chef who told her it was royal icing she was putting in and it was Asda sugapaste lol the roses she made were great for, ok I can't lie they were awful, and I ended up making 10 roses for her to decorate the cake with. So my answer to these people is wicked, send me a pic when you're done

Mel, chantilly for me!

Maisie, my tongue was green too. I washed up and brushed my teeth before the school run!

Well I've got all my paperwork for the fair, alleluiah. I rang up British ********** and they emailed me my insurance details yeeha.

On a less positive note, I ruined two batches of walnut brownies. 15mins after they went in the oven, I noticed a bit of smoke, went for a closer look, opened the oven thinking why is it a bit smokey and why is the top of the brownies a bit burnt???

Turns out I'd accidentally moved the temperature knob to 300C. Just don't know how I managed that... sigh..

Also my youngest and my husband have been eating my cadbury crunchies I'd intended for the honeycomb brownies!!! They left me with two out of 14!! GRR

Lizzy, right at the end of GBBO, when the credits were rolling, cookie monster and another puppet appeared (I think this puppet represented one of the hosts). Cookie mosnter was as usual devouring the cookies and said 'Delicious cookies, and no soggy bottom!!'. HAHAHA

Siany, my mum left my sister in her pram for ages under the Philippine sun, and she got sunburnt. She was very red apparently, and in turn, my dad saw red!!

Oooh, I've done doofy things too! I've left my key in the car door, I've left my front door wide open while I went to work, left windows open while I went out etc etc.

HUH where's the picture of the cake then??? I can't believe they got a professional cake maker indirectly say its easy to make your own cake :(:x The comments below the article are pretty good though.

Really glad you said that lizzy... So many people scoff at my £35 a figure price and most of my bride and grooms end up at £90... They take ages tho so not reducing my prices!

Too right Gray! I'm seriously considering getting over my camera phobia and setting up a video with a clock in the background showing the time lapse next time I do something intricate that people think takes 1/2 an hour!

Yeah, telegraph article - you can make a wedding cake 'worthy of the gbbo' Erm, did no one see the wedding cakes they did? Admittedly mine would have looked like that too given 6 hours, but I still wouldn't use it as a benchmark for people to aim for!

Aah, thanks jean, I'll un-delete and have a look :-D

Sorry about your brownies, that's gutting :-(

OK - so had to take the afternoon off to make my cupcakes for tomorrow's Macmillan coffee morning.  As I don't have M4rvel's beetroot:-D base recipe yet (hint, hint  :-D) I made the Hummingbird one for red velvet.  My kitchen has an odd smell about it tho' - sort of chocolatey yet vinegary at the same time.  I've not tasted one as I'm not a great fan but my daughter's boyfriend said they are lovely.  Just made my cream cheese frosting - and now wondering what to do about fixing the Macmillan rice paper  on with.  I have never used rice paper toppers and not sure if the colour will bleed if I do it tonight.  Does anybody know perchance?

Jean - that article .... well the cost to go on one of the courses is around £390 - not sure whether you get a cake included for that or not.  Yeah the comments were interesting - I recognised one from on here too! ;)

AThanks lizzy, so if I said around about that price it would be acceptable?

Mel, got both mats, love them both, I dusted my lace with petal dust after it was cooked, not sure if you remember the golden anniversary cake, I dusted the lace around the cake, worked really well.

AMe too Nanny, that's why I had to ask you guys as I couldn't decide! Went with Chantilly in the end, it's such a nice mat! Still making roses too, trying one of those David Austin style ones, so far it's looking really pretty!

For figure costs I'd agree with Lizzy and Gray, don't underprice as they are fiddly little bu&&ers! :)

I've never used rice paper toppers Kathy, but if it was me I'd be tempted to do them in the morning if you have time, just in case?

Glad you got all your paperwork Jean! Sorry your brownies burnt, hope your others are ok! LOL re Crunchies, I hope they ate them over a few days at least!!

Was meant to be on a flower arranging class tonight, but it was cancelled last minute as a load of the other people going backed out :( Was really looking forward to it as well :/

Any ideas how much to charge for about an 8" Starbucks cup of coffee type cake?

AIt was just a one off class a local florist was running, but I'd love to learn the proper techniques so I can arrange my sugar flowers better! You should definitely ask your SIL Nanny if you're interested!

Are you carving the cake? If so I'd be looking at at least £75, maybe more depending on what details you're adding?

Just sitting here watching hubby try and rescue the telly I cleaned a month or so ago as a nice surprise for him as it was covered in brick dust. Apparently it's not good for plasmas to use baby wipes and kitchen spray on the screens as they have a special coating which you shouldn't touch with anything other than a dry cloth. Who knew?

I've told him that this is what comes of me actually doing some cleaning :-?

He's mumbling to the telly now 'I'm sorry for taking off more of your special coating, it wasn't me that did it before' :-D Love him.

I'm also being given strict instructions that no matter how dusty it gets, I'm not allowed near it

AHum just watching Choccywocky......they are making some big deal about never ever having *anything* inedible in their cakes. Erm so do you not use dowels or boards when you stack? And how about the kilo of glitter you've just chucked on that cake?! Methinks something's not quite right there.....

AOh dear its a man thing I'm sure, if I go near the TV either any kind of duster or polish, I have to pick John up off the floor, not allowed to clean it with anything other than the dry cloth it came with.

Mel, I wasnt sure what to to, then I wondered bout using the 8" hemispherical tin so it would be large, do you think that would work?

AOh yea Nanny that would probably work well! I'd still be looking at charging more than a normal cake though, as covering and building that won't be as easy as a simple round/square?

This!

Honestly, hubby has this all singing all dancing plasma Panasonic top of the range 55" 3D thingy.

I'm not even allowed to go near it with anything other than the remote.

Seriously annoying sometimes!

AEvening all. :-)

Just nipping on while my cupcakes are cooling. I'll probably forget something or someone, don't mean to, apologies in advance.

Thanks for the stand advice Gray, I'll keep that in mind. :-)

Kathy were you asking about wafer paper? They should be ok overnight, I've used it on SP and buttercream and it's been fine. If you're worried tho do it in the morning. It'll take seconds to plop them on while you're waiting for the kettle to boil.

Lizzy! A child missing for an hour! You must've been sick with worry! Lmao at everyone being left outside shops in prams! I can remember going to the village shops and babies being left outside shops in their prams, it was the norm wasn't it, wouldn't see it happen now tho.

Can't help with your pricing nanny sorry. I hope you get the Starbucks cake tho, should be fun. Have you seen Suzanne's costa cup? It's the take away one, it's brill, I want one, Costa is my favourite coffee.

Ah Lizzy, you reminded me saying brick dust on the telly (oops!). Is your kitchen finished?

Missed the cookie monster on bake off.

Kathy I looked at that article, when it said a wedding cake worthy of bake off I thought "really? Have you seen them?!" Hark at me who's never made a wedding cake before! In my defence they're pretty bad tho aren't they. I think because they're more bakers than cake decorators, they don't devote all their time to one specific thing.

Off to finish my cakes now.

Lol :-D In fairness to him I did ruin it! The kids walked in and within 5 seconds they had mouths open and were asking what happened to the telly. It looked a bit like when you first clear grease off glass :O

I hold the remote in our house though, he's not allowed it. Honestly, he can code all day long, can strip and rebuild a pc in no time, understands all sorts of technical cr*p, but can be work the sky remote? Nope.

Sounds like a good plan to use the nematodes tin nanny - you probably won't even have to trim the top as the coffee will need a foamy top :-)

The building work still isn't finished maisie :-( 3 1/2 months overdue now. It's getting a bit desperate as we've got a health and safety check soon, and I can't see piles of rubble and trip hazard pipes passing :-(

ALol, how silly :-D

Urgh windsurfers today. I don't know why but I'm really not feeling this cake. I just have it in my head it's going to be a car crash. Not helped by having to make several mini figures.

Ooh, I wonder if it would be quicker to use the holly products head mould thingy? I'll have to dig it out and see how small they go.

Has anyone anything interesting on today?

Hope your cakes are going well Kathy!

AMorning all.

Kathy I'm in work today, but did make choc cake last night, ganache buttercream it with a generous helping of caramel in the middle, then crumb coated it too.

Will cover it tonight then finish it off for her to pick it up at 11.30 tomorrow.

Morning All!

Oh dear Lizzy, I didn't realise the building work was still going on, you poor thing you must be sick of it by now! Do you know how much longer its going to be? I hope they finish in time for your inspection! Good luck with your windsurfer cake, I hope the head mould works for you, I have to say I love the one I got for my wedding toppers, such a good result for a lot less time!

I'm making yet more flowers today, but also hoping to cover one of the dummy cakes and put the lace on it etc. Have to go into town this morning though to get some leaflets printed out and things, so will see how I get on time wise!

Hope everyone has a lovely Friday :)

Gray when are you transporting the submarine?

Kuuushi aren't you heading off on holiday soon?

Catsmum & Tiddy, hope you are ok, haven't seen you here for a while?

Bahahaha :-D I didn't even notice. Obviously that's a word I use tons which is why my phone decided to use it. Honestly, technology socks, I love the swipy keyboard but it has a mind of it's own :-)

No idea Mel, they've gone quiet after my last email at the beginning of the week. We're starting to get worried now that they're just going to leave it :-(

What flowers are you making?

Morning all - I stuck the toppers on - standing up to attention!  I haven't got any photos of the whole lot yet but apparently the company has rallied and there is a lot of cake!  I have bought somebody else's since my ones are nearly all gone:

I'm so pleased that lots of people got involved.  They helped my mum so much and were so kind to her right up until she passed away in June.

ROFL technology socks!! Hope they are warm! :D

Oh no! That's not good :/ Maybe a phone call to nudge them? I really hope they don't leave you in the lurch! :/

I'm finishing the roses mainly then probably some filler flowers. Need to practise my wired hydrangeas as I just cannot seem to get the hang of them, but I'll probably chicken out of that and do some blossoms or maybe Lily of the Valley sprigs instead LOL!

AFfs, it knows, I swear it!

I've never tried hydrangeas. It's funny, I don't like them at all in real life, but for some reason they're one of my favourites on cakes.

Yeah, me too :/ I don't really want to phone as I'm not a confrontational person and the boss is very good at saying all the right things to placate you, but then sweet FA gets done. At least in an email if I do have to complain to someone about them u have proof of requesting all these things over and over.

The stupid thing is this could be sorted in a day, maybe two. Ho hum.
