I'm Sorry Tiddy I thought the same as Maisie, and also still think the cake was stunning, I don't think I'd have the patience to do all those blossoms.
ARoxy was it you who told me to stick the squares straight on to the ganache? It worked a treat. :-) All the squares are on now. Loads still to do but I'm having a little break, I'm seeing squares before my eyes!
Yes it was Maisie glad it worked, you must be sick of looking at squares you'll be counting them in your sleep
Looking forward to seeing it when it's finished.
AI know, I'll be dreaming in minecraft squares again. I'm do glad I didn't cover it SP first tho, it would've been hard work. I don't like square cakes at all. I've got loads left to do and I'm supposed to be leaving to deliver it at 8. I just hope the buttercream grass looks nice cos I won't have time to change it if it doesn't!
Tiddy I'm really sorry you decided to bin it. Did you at least take photos for your portfolio? I understand if you weren't completely happy with it, but that's not to say a future customer wouldn't think it's the most perfect cake they've seen.
Here's my wedding from yesterday, just popping on in a petal break (having just watched hubby be drenched by my kids for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge :-D)
ALizzy I love it! That's a lot of flowers! I love the kids sitting on the edge. It's gorgeous, I bet the bride was delighted.
That's gorgeous Lizzy, I like the kids being on it to that's a nice touch, beautiful roses to they must have took you ages to make. I bet they were over the moon with it.

Hi sugarluva, I thought you were going to New York?
It's taken me an hour to put two rows of squares on the cake. I've got a tiny gap at the back but it's not even big enough to cut a square in half to fill it so I think it's better to leave it. I think if I try to disguise it I'll make it look worse. I'll worry about that when it's finished tho. It's very tedious but I'm cautiously pleased so far. :-)
I am maisie. We're spending 3 nights in London then 7 nights in new York and finally 6 nights in Iceland. I've never been to new York or Iceland before so I'm really excited about that, just hope this volcano doesn't ruin everything!
Wow lizzy that cake is stunning! You make some of the most amazing cakes.
Sorry to hear you binned your cake tiddy, if you weren't happy though I understand. I'm sure it was lovely though.
Looking forward to seeing the minecraft cake maisie!
So jealous Sugarluva I would love to go to new york, I'm sure little old me would fit in your suitcase
ALizzy stunning cake, absolutely stunning.
Guess which idiot just spent an hour cutting out 50 hearts only to realise they were too small for the letters to go on them. Face...Palm!!!!
ALizzy that is so beautiful. I think it's so lovely and the figures are so cute.
Kathy
AWow Lizzybug that cake is amazing,
What size are the tiers if you don't mind me asking, eg. 10" 8 " etc.
That is some holiday sugaluva!!
Looking forward to seeing the mine craft cake!
AOh no siany what a nightmare! That's the kind of thing I usual do...
I'm off to bed now guys night night. I must try and keep up to date on here more often!
AHi All!
Wow lots to catch up on again! Hope you all had lovely weekends!
Siany glad Legoland was fun :)
Kathy, love the multi-person birthday cake, it's fab! The eggs were my favourite bit!
Maisie, I hate square cakes too! They do get easier with practise though, honestly! Hope you have stopped seeing squares by now, and the rest of the cake goes well!
Tiddy, so sorry your head is still bad, and even more that you binned your cake! If you weren't happy with it though then that's all that matters really, I'm the same with chucking things I'm not happy with! Looove the painted roses though, they are really pretty, is that using the 'double dip brush' method?
Suzanne, glad your over nighter event well! LOL re red wine though, I'm totally the same - had 4 G&Ts at the wedding last night (after 2 pimms and one champers during the day.......ahem.....) and woke up with such a woolly head today! Luckily it was cooked breakfast this morning, which sorted me right out, yum!
Lizzy love your cake, so neat and I love the flowers! Can I ask how you attached them? Just curious as everyone seems to use different methods for cascades!
Hi everyone else, sorry if I've missed you out, too many pages to catch up on and remember!
Thankfully all went well with the cake! The birdcage travelled beautifully in the boot, despite the 3 hour drive, and the last 30mins being wiggly, hilly, bumpy roads! Hubby drove sooo slowly we must have peed off so many other drivers ROFL! Set up all went to plan and it was done by 12.30! They didn't cut it until 8pm though, so it was a long day of nipping in and checking it was still ok! But they loved it, and I even got a thank you during the speeches, which was really lovely and unexpected!

Mel that is gorgeous so clean and precise, love the birds at the front. Glad it all went well. How nice of them to thank you in the speeches, you must be thrilled they were so happy with it.
AThats gorgeous Mel, stunning colour. Your birdcage is beautiful, can I ask what size tins are they and how many did you make?
AOoh Siany you are so brave!! Hope you've warmed up now!
Thanks all! I went bright red when they mentioned me LOL, so sweet but v embarrassing!
Nanny I used 2 x 5" tins which I baked my choc cake in so they filled them, then torted each into 3 layers, but actually only used 5 as it was too tall otherwise. I then baked a hemisphere (Lakeland small one) for the top :) I filled 3 layers, added a board, then did the other 2 layers plus the dome. It's sat on an 8" cake, so needed to do 5" because once iced and decorated it was more like 6" at the base and I needed to fit the birds on!
Tiddy - I didn't see the cake, but I'm so sorry to read you binned it.
Mel - that's a really, really beautiful cake and SOOOO neat and such clean lines! I love it.
I did make a cake to take with and she loved it! She kept saying how long it must have taken and so it seemed rude to say it was the quickest one I could think of, LOL! And that was despite me telling her I *didn't* make the cigarellos myself!
Here's the cake I made yesterday for collection today. Only a very simple one, but the customer was thrilled with it. Her daughter does archery and is very good at it, by all accounts!! Not very feminine, but she said it couldn't have been any other design!
I also made a dozen cookies this evening, for collection tomorrow. I haven't photographed them yet. They're already bagged up, so I don't know how well they'll photograph.
AEvening all :-) Thanks so much for your comments xx
You're right roxy, those type of roses take me an age, I estimated about 45+ hours in total. I can make less detailed ones much faster (not fast mind, but faster than that :-D), but I like them better this way!
The cakes were 6/8/10/12 newstreet.
I didn't actually make the figures. It was a bit strange, they asked another baker to, and it was arranged before they asked me to do the cake. That's why the two kids are on the base - they're meant to be on the tiers, but I think when she was told the cakes sizes she didn't take into account that a 2" tier difference only allows for a 1" edge. She also came over the night before to attach them to the cake. That wasn't happening, I wasn't travelling with toppers on the cakes, plus I needed to assemble it on site as the roses wouldn't travel in situ. All very strange.
Mel, for all but the bottom row they are on cocktail sticks, then royal iced for extra hold. I snipped them off for the bottom ones as they were unnecessary. They were made directly on the sticks so that I could put them in the cakes which would have been a pita with wires and holders etc. It does mean I couldn't wire the outer petals on the large roses though which is awkward when you're trying to fit them together.
Lol @ your hearts Siany, that sounds very familiar :-D Well done for doing the challenge too!
Your birdcage is beautiful Mel. I'm so envious of such neat sugarpaste. I actually said to hubby this week that I'd have to be busy if I get asked for a plain wedding cake! I can do them with some effort, but the stress of having to be perfect does my head in! It also really frustrates me that I've been doing this for yonks but I still have issues with lumps and bumps, it's one area I fall down on time and again and it's maddening.
The target cake is great relznik, and who needs feminine all the time? :-)
AOooh lovely cake Suzanne, really neat! I like simpler bold designs as they have a really good impact! Look forward to seeing the cookies :-) I haven't done those for ages, I really must! Hmm my new Lakeland flavours do need a test run.....
Ah yes, I used cocktail stick method for the rose on top of my cage too, much easier! Then I added extra loose petals around it to fill the gap in and soften it a bit :-) The SP on the birdcage was really tricky! Used the panel method which I haven't done much, and it took about 3 goes (& a lot of binned SP as it was dark choc ganache underneath!) to get it right, and even then it still wasn't perfect, but was disguisable with the details thankfully!
Aw poor you Siany! Make sure you keep the smaller hearts though, am sure they will come in handy for something else in the future
AMorning all been there done that with the birdcage Mel, Grrr!
Fab cake Suzanne.
AMorning all. :-)
Gorgeous birdcage cake mel, I love the colours, it's beautiful.
Brilliant archery cake Suzanne, were the circles hard? Glad your host loved her cake and lmao re: would've been rude to tell her it was easy! :-D
Aw Siany, bet you were kicking yourself! Yeah, definitely keep them in case you need them.
Here's the minecraft cake.

The squares are a bit wonky in places but overall I'm quite pleased with it. The birthday boy was delighted, said it's the best cake he's ever had.
AOne word for that birdcage cake, Mel---- outstanding both in execution and design. Loved the colours. No wonder you got a mention in the speech.
Lizzy beautiful cake again. Having just spent ages making roses and carnations I know how long they take to get them perfect! Many thanks for the explanation on the cascade technique.
Archery cake also fab - very neat. Nowhere to hide with that one. Well done.

Sorry Maisie just spotted the brilliant minecraft cake. Now remind me why you were fretting over the square cake.....you did it!
Morning all
Suzanne love the archery cake, so neat and love the colours you've use.
Maisie the minecraft cake is fab, I love the pig and the way you have done the board with the squares to. Those squares look smaller on the cake than they did in your drawer it must have took you ages to put them all on, well worth it though it looks great. I don't know why you doubt your ability and what a compliment from the birthday boy you must be chuffed.
AOh Maisie that's brilliant!! The piggy is adorable! :-D
Aw thanks Catsmum :) I loved how the colours came out too, it's Sugarflair apple green, and claret colouring, both came out perfectly and I think they really worked together. Love the pink that the claret makes, such a nice tone.
