AHi everyone. I'm doing a horse head cake and I wonder if anyone could tell me what kind of colour to use. In a rush I did buy a pre made terracotta colour and was going to add white icing and a bit of brown to take out the red a bit. Also have an airbrush machine I was thinking of using. Any help grateful. Thanks

AHi All!

Wow congrats on all the results today! :)

Looks like we all need steel toed work boots LOL! I have to admit at the time I wasn't aware it hurt that much, but it was the night of my 21st and quite a bit of alcohol had been consumed by then! It was the next morning that was the worst

Well I think my dark ganache *might* be ok :/ I added a bit more cream and gave it a beating then left it on the side to cool, stirring every so often. It's still quite soft though, so I put a little in the fridge to see what it did and it went rock hard! Have now taken it back out to see what happens back at room temp, but if it behaves then I think I'm safe? It won't go back to grainy when it warms back up will it?

ASorry another question about buttercream. Am I beating the butter for ages as well as when the icing sugar is added? What about adding the icing sugar a bit at a time? Should I be beating it for a while between each adding. Sorry for the step by step questions. Just want to get it right.

ADanielle, I beat my butter first to get it soft and pale, then add my icing sugar all at once and beat the he'll out of it for 20 mins on high till light and fluffy.

ACongratulations to your son for getting the results he needed tiddy

Congratulations to your son too Suzanne. A's and a*'s at this age, can you imagine how well he's going to do next year!

Siany it might be a bit of a con but much, much better than it could've been. My car needs to go in the garage soon, it's clunking, I've been putting it off cos I don't want to be without it during the holidays but it's getting worse by the day.

Bashini SP or not I think I'll still stick the squares on one by one. I didn't think I could do it anyway tbh.

I'm off to bed now I think, I've had a busy day, an early night is just what I need. G'nite all. :-)

ASorry to be a buttercream nag but I'm having real problems with it. Thought I'd do a chocolate cake and practice my buttercream. So I made a buttercream with 1.4kg icing sugar, 500 butter 200 melted choc and dollop of carnation caramel. When I spread it on the cake it wasn't spreadable, well it was in a way but when I pulled it one or got to the edge the buttercream totally pulled off. I think I'm going to have a buttercream melt down

Danielle I don't know if it helps but there is a free horse head tutorial on the Paul Bradford website, maybe it will tell you something about what colour to use. Gp to the online courses tab at the top of the pages and go to all courses you will find it there. You will have to sign up for the free membership if you are not already registered.

Mel glad you sorted your ganache out.

Maisie why don't you cut all the squares out the day before and let them dry so they are easier to stick on the cake with them misshaping

We have just been to the pictures to see Into the storm, it started of a bit slow but then it got really good. I used my Tesco clubcard points for the tickets and had a voucher for a free regular drink and popcorn that cineworld had emailed me so pretty much a free night out :D

Kelsey your cake looks great, from what I have read and understand glycerine is used in royal and SP to help keep it soft and stop it from setting as quick. Not sure what you could do for your lustre but thinking maybe it will just take longer to dry because of the glycerine but I could be wrong. I've never heard of using glycerine to mix with lustre dusts before only vodka or clear extracts. I hope someone else can help you sort it out.

AThanks Roxy, I used it because I don't want to use vodka and I don't have any clear extracts to use! I guess I'll leave it until morning and see how it turns out!

AOoh Kuushi that's pretty! Not sure I can help, same as Roxy I've only ever mixed lustre with alcohol extracts etc. hopefully it will dry overnight?

Question, had an email from someone asking if I sell plain iced cakes. It's for a date I can't do, but what would you say if it wasn't? Slightly suspicious of things like this in case people want to decorate the cake themselves, which wouldn't be something I'm comfortable with?

Danielle I'd check out the thread MBalaska recommended, the US use BC loads more than us UK peeps, so will know everything there is to know! Personally I never put melted choc in my BC though, as I always find it stiffens up, I make my choc BC with cocoa powder.

AHi all!!! :-)

Congratulations to your sons Tiddy and Suzanne..

Roxylee, sorry I missed your post and hope your hubby is ok?

Mel, if the ganache is too hard put it in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds and see whether it's soft. If so just mix it until you get the spreadable consistency you want. My ganache did the same thing few days ago and that is what I did and it's turned out fab,

Maisie, looking forward to seeing you MC cake.

I did a suit case cake for a 21st birthday and it was my first try on making one and soo pleased with it. So here it is..

I agree, plain cakes are a dead giveaway for someone to add something to it and pass on as their own!

Tidds it dried! I had to use it really, had no choice haha! It took twice as long to dry than vodka I'm guessing but it dried with a lovely shine too!

Congrats to all the kids with great results! I'm still trying to find out the results of the teenagers I know, they much be celebrating cos I can't get hold of a few of them!

Maisie - My car started rattling and then clunking a bit, and then one day (cos I left it too long....) it started to sound like a motorcycle.... I took in into Kwikfit an my exhaust had come clean apart from itself at the front of the car! That was the quick fix problem that they didn't charge me for thankfully! I'd gone in prepared to have to pay for a whole new exhaust so free was better than I could have imagined! I hope your car doesn't have anything major wrong with it!

Siany -  my MOT ended up costing me £14 on top of the usual fees because the previous owner of my car (or his mechanic) had put one of my tyres on back to front... it solved the issue of aqua planing that I had been having, but I think £14 is probably excessive for the 10 minute job of taking a tyre off, turning it around and putting it back on again... especially as no materials were used.

Danielle - I hope you've solved your BC problem, but from looking at your recipe it looks like there is too much sugar in it and that's what's causing it to be stiff and pull away from the cake.

MBalaska - It's good to see you! I'm always surprised when you pop in here, but it's always lovely to see you!

Bashini - I love the suitcase!

Kelsey - The reason Glycerine takes so long to dry is because it's a humectant and so it attracts moisture to itself. Out of interest though, you said you didn't want to use vodka but would have used clear extract, why is that? I use vodka as its much cheaper than the extracts I buy, but the reason extracts work is because most things are extracted using alcohol so essentially it's like using expensive vodka. The cake looks lovely btw!

My cake of the day was partly an experiment with Cocoform as I've never used it before but I had ordered some from the ********** shop so I could try it as it comes up in all kinds of places I've read recently!

I quite liked using it, it was probably just as I expected as a product to use, I do think I will try making it myself now though because the taste of it is not really worth the cost of it IMO but it handles really well. It's just the beige parts that are made with the Cocoform, but I did a fair bit of experimenting along the way. It's a 6" cake.

My first time using Cocoform. Beige parts are white chocolate Cocoform, coloured parts are mostly 50/50 paste. *the yellow is much brighter in the picture than in person

AMorning!

Early start today, got to get on with the wedding cake, plus make & deliver 24 cupcakes! Looks like the ganache firmed right up overnight, yay! Will gently zap it in the microwave to loosen it up and then see how we go! Lesson learnt though, grainy ganache can be ok if you leave it long enough lol!

Glad your pattern dried kuuuushi, such a pretty cake, they will love it!

Love the billowing on your cake Natt, it's one of my favourite techniques, I find people keep wanting to poke at it though!! Interesting re Cocoform too, I'd been meaning to try, but maybe I'll attempt making my own too before buying it, it's so expensive!

Wow Bashini that case is amazing! The details are perfect! Look forward to seeing the wedding cake!

X

AHi everyone, I've not been around for a few days I've been so busy. Just had a quick catch up now. Congratulations to everyone's kids GCSE results. There have been some lovely cakes made too! Kelsey, Tiddy and Bashini yours were all great. I can't remember who else made what!

I have no caking planned for the next few weeks but the cake pops went down well at the baby shower.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do with a shed load of milk? I'm looking after some pets and they have a 2 litre bottle of milk delivered everyday! The owners said they couldn't be bothered stopping the milkman coming whilst they were away for 2 weeks and then starting up again so I should just take it so it wasn't wasted. Who needs 2 litres of milk a day! I'll end up with 14 bottles by the end of this booking if I don't find something to do with it! There's only so many milkshakes a girl can drink...

AMorning all. :-)

Lovely cake Kuuushi, glad it dried.

Gorgeous billows natt, I love them so much, Siany made one and it's my favourite cake on her Facebook.

Bashini your suitcase is fabulous! I'm curious about the map and how you did it too.

Natt it's not the exhaust, it's in the steering column and underfoot, I can feel it as well as hear it. I had an advisory last MOT and I think that's what it is. I don't take any notice of advisorys usually. Mostly because on my last car i had an advisory one year, didn't have the job done but had no advisorys the next year, same garage too.

Danielle you've had good buttercream advice already but I wanted to make a suggestion, if you needed chocolate buttercream how about using ganache instead? I don't know if you've ever used it but it's easy and delicious, I hate making buttercream since I started using ganache.
