AHi Roxylee, the red velvet emultion is red in colour so you make a red velvet cake with that.:-)

Barbara, glad you got your knee checked out. Rest a bit more if you can...

AMorning cake mates! Roxy - I personally haven't baked with the red velvet but my daughter has. I can vouch for the taste and look of the whooppee pies that she made! I used the butter vanilla in the buttercream on my garden cake in my avatar. I made it a raspberry ripple but to be honest, don't bother with the raspberry rippling - you didn't even notice it. However - the buttercream tasted more....well, buttery! I would definitely say the emulsions give a little help where needed. I have also got some oils which I bought from the States last year - cherry and strawberry. I have yet to use them but they are in very tiny bottles (the ones I have anyway).

When I went to CI at ExCel this year I stopped by a flavourings stand and was greeted by a very supercillious man who thrust a bottle under my nose with "Smell this"!! I did and it smelt of Christmas pudding. He then went on to say that I wouldn't find anything quite like these flavours. I said that I had got some already and then he said "I doubt that"! Bloody cheek! I informed him that I wasn't a liar and started to walk off. "Oh - I suppose it's Lorann - they're all chemicals you know". Well - he carried on and I let him think that I was going to buy but then I said that he was too expensive and walked off. I later Googled him and found out that he was the grandfather of the blogger who was trialling all the flavours. He was a co-owner in this company. My advice? Leave grandad at home next time - he scares people off. I only mention it in case you guys who are going to the next CI see them as they might be worth looking at. They were called Foodie Flavours I think.

AMorning All!

Ooh Kathy I know the stand you mean, I had a similar thing happen to me! Really pushy and obnoxious sales person, it put me right off!

How's everyone doing today? I've got a quiet week cake wise at the moment, had a couple of enquiries to work on, but apart from that it's admin and planning new cake designs. I have another fair in October and want to take a couple of new dummies with me.

Oh and I'm off to lakeland in a bit to get my small hemisphere pan, and I might look at their new flavours, was it on here someone recommended the rhubarb & custard ones?

Hmm not sure, you should probably send me one to taste test for you :D I woke up with a spider on my face once at 2 am, didn't believe that thing about eating them till that happened, I do now.

AHHHHHHHHHH! AHHHHHHHHHH! AHHHHHHHHHH!

Oh unicorn poop!

I've just realised (yes just!) that the bows I glittered last night aren't edible. And they were meant for cupcakes. Now wtf am I gonna do? Hahah!

It's on removable items isn't it? And you're making it for family? I'd just tell your family member /friend that they need to tell parents that the bows should be removed not eaten, but so you don't freak them out let them know that if they do get nibbled it's not dangerous, just not advised. The glaze idea is genius Mel, I used to do that with hairspray for charcoal and pastel drawings :-)

I was thinking about choccywoccy and the amount of glitter they use, and their pieces are welded on with chocolate so I'm sure that tons of glitter is ingested there. I guess they must get round it because technically the bits are removable.

Nanny, it's a good thing you don't have any cakes, because if you did you'd be up and about and on your poor knee!

Those flowers are so pretty Mel, they def look like they can be done with sugar. Are you going to give them a go?

BTW, what is going on with cc? It keeps logging me off and not saving replies. It's getting rather irritating.

AHi Mel - they have buy one get one half price on flavourings at the moment. I have bought some of their flavours but I already have a different rhubarb and custard one.

Yeah - if it wasn't for that guy at the exhibition, I might have purchased some flavours but he was a really rude man. Not sure I feel any leaning towards them now!

AOh check out this cake by a lady I follow on FB: Drat! the link won't work!!! Edited to say try and look for Kingfisher Cakes in St Albans!

She posted that she was doing an "all nighter" and it turns out she was doing a special commission from Mulberry! So not all designers are against tribute cakes! :)

AMorning all. :-)

If this post disappears I'm not re typing it! It's taking me ages, I'm having the same trouble as you Lizzy and it's doing my head in.

Suzanne you'll be fine, don't worry about small talk, the cake will break the ice. Just be yourself, I'm always interested in what you've got to say, cake related or not. And remember, the hosts are probably feeling exactly the same and the hostess is probably worrying and planning and cleaning her house to within an inch of it's life. :-)

That's a lovely cake Kathy, south black, I bet that was hard work. I don't know who cara delevingne is tho. Sorry if I spelled it wrong but I'm not scrolling back up to check in case I lose this post again!

AHi Maisie - I'm also having problems - really weird. I keep getting logged out and then links don't work. Yesterday I noticed that in the url the word "new" appeared as in "new.cakecentral.com" but today it's gone! I think that the mods are trying to do something to make it more secure. I've had no porn on my phone lately!!

Cara is a supermodel - a tiny young thing - who advertises for Mulberry. The bags are as big as she is! However - I saw this lady's work at CI last year and she won best in show for her other style of Mulberry bag. Her work is amazing. She recently had to remove all her Chanel bags from her FB page and website after being contacted by their legal team! So the reason I posted the photo was to show that a) her work is stunning and b) some designers are a bit more open to flattery than others!

AThat's mad isn't it? I can understand if the work is poor, but if her chanel bags were anything like those ones you'd think they'd be paying her for advertising them!

Does anyone else hate lining tins? I mean, I *really* hate it. It's almost on a par with unloading the dishwasher. I don't know why, it's not hard, it doesn't take long, but omg I hate it.

I hate lining tins Lizzy but since trying Petitecat's recipe for homemade cake release I don't line my tins any more. I just brush the cake release round the tin and put a precut piece of parchment on the bottom.

That handbag cake is lovely.

Thanks everyone for the info on emulsions.

AHi Kathy - I love it. So simple!

I've decided to tell them to remove, they aren't exactly edible but they aren't harmful if you accidentally do!

AOh we have a crisis.....we ordered the wrong size boards for the engagement cake:cry: We ordered a 9inch card for the stacked cake and it should have been an 8inch. I think it's to much to hope that the ganache and sugarpaste will fill the half in gap. Aaarrrgghh!

Am going to see if Tesco sell any boards in the lunch break I think. No advice sought - just wanted to vent a little.

AIf you've got a scalpel you can cut hardboard, if that's what it is. If it's a drum that's a bit more tricky!

I've just been asked to quote for a catwalk cake; 'just a small cake like a catwalk, nothing on it'. I feel like that's going to be a bit odd with nothing on it :/

AYep - it is gutting - it's our own fault tho. Lizzy - I do have a scalpel - do you think it would be OK? I just worry that the silver paper will get into the cake. What do you mean a catwalk cake with nothing on it? Won't it just look like an airport runway? Will people know what it's supposed to be? Or are they putting models on it?

ha ha ha I would totally employ someone just to line tins! I am often tempted by reusable ones.... its like a sheet from lakeland, you cut it to size and just lift it out of the draw when you need it, I want one for each and every tin... I'm sure I'll have to adjust baking times by a few mins thinking about it.....

I just got fibreoptic broadband put in!!!! woohoo!!!! little ol' Larne is steaming ahead on the technology front! up from 1.2mb/s to 40! just think of all the tutorials I can watch (what kind of man am I for that to be my first thought?!!)

Kathy I do that so often it's infuriating, the thin cards cut well with scissors then use a little PVA to seal the cut edge...

AHello Gray, how're you? :-)

I've got those reusable ones but large for lining baking trays. They're great until you realise you need to wash the flipping things :-D I'm with you, hire the job out!

I do it a lot Kathy, and I've not had a problem so far. I just cut from the silver side to the underside. Gray's right though, if it's just the thin cards you can use scissors, you only need the scalpel for the 3 or 4mm hardboard ones :-)

That's exactly what I thought, it's a bit strange isn't it?

That's so nice when you get a really genuine thank you. It's one of my favourite parts of doing this job :)

I've had a look on Google (what did we do before??) and found some catwalk cakes. This is the best empty one I could find http://www.caketemptations.com.hk/en/other-creative-designs/3d-catwalk-stage-cake.html

I'm not convinced, but I'll see if this is what the lady was thinking of...
