That's Tiddy I do pretty similiar except I usually bake my cakes the day before as I find they are to soft to cut if I don't. I usually wrap them in cling film and fridge overnight and when buttercreamed put in fridge for about ten to twenty mins then cover and have never had problem, my house is usually pretty warm. I think it must be the method is putting to much buttercream on as I always use to do it exactly as you do. I have tried the greaseproof thing on a pillow cake and it does work so I will try it again.
Should I leave my SP overnight the if it is to soft and I have to add cmc or tylo to it as I don't have gum trag?
I couldnt honestly say roxy as i dont use them so would worry it would be too firm
Thank Nanny it helps to see a photo I use to put a little more than that on as I though a crumb coat wasn't enough. The upside down and the board on top method puts loads of buttercream I will go back to my old way of doing things and only use those methods if just butterceaming or ganaching a cake.
Thanks Tiddy you've been a great help.
I have some buttercream left over so I will make a small cake in the next couple of days and do a thinner coat of buttercream and hopefully problem solved.
Where do you get gum trag from Tiddy? Maybe I could try mixing some of the SP that has sat overnight with the cmc or tylo in with normal SP so it is not to hard. I will experiment. Though maybe my SP problems will go away when the buttercream is thinner and I might not need to add any as I never use to.
you can get it most places that sell tylo etc roxy. I get mine from culpitt. The last lot was a huge bag and it will last forever as i use such a small amount :)
Thanks Tiddy I will have a look around, I have just been reading the differences between them on another site, cmc and tylo are the same and gum trag is the proper stuff so now I know , stupid me I thought they were all the same Thanks for all your help I feel much better now.

For all those having trouble this week...take a looky at my fb page. That will cheer you up
ARoxy I do pretty much the same as you and my crumbcoat looks like Nanny's. I do put my crumbcoated cake in the fridge then I clean my mess up, have a cuppa, see to the kids, whatever and when I go back out to cover it I get the cake out of the fridge first. Let it come back to room temp before I put the SP on. I never spray it with water or anything but maybe I don't need to cos it's been in the fridge, I don't know, I just never have and never needed to. I added CMC/tylo to my Renshaws last night and I swear it did t make a jot of difference! Certainly didn't make it too hard to work with. I'm the other way round too, rarely get bubbles rolling it out, sometimes do on the cake. I just pop em with a pin and smooth the hole with my finger. I think sometimes SP just misbehaves for no apparent reason. Last night I rolled and applied 4 pieces. One looked like it was melting into the ganache the other three were ok. No idea why. None. Frustrating a not the word, you don't sound silly, I know how you feel, I had tears in my eyes at one point.
Beautiful painting nanny. Get it on a cake, it's gorgeous.
Thanks Maisie, I just looked at Tiddy's facebook page and mine don't seem as bad now I think today is the first time I have ever got a bubble under the SP on the cake but normally do get a few when rolling it out and have my needle handy. When I'm ready to start rolling I get my lump of SP and instead of just flattening it with my hands I use the rolling pin and bash it a bit so I end up with lines across the SP all the way down and it seems to stop most of the bubbles. It is frustrating isn't it, I always want them to look nice for the people I'm making them for and have been getting so worked up with myself because I feel like I'm going backwards as I've never had these problems before, but hopefully will be ok now. I have made a flower pot cake for my nan and airbrushed it so I just need to put all the flowers on I made, it doesn't look as good as I wanted due to my smooshing buttercream but hopefully it won't look to bad.
AI am tempted Maisie, she wants white roses on a pink cake with white cake lace but gonna practise abit more before I let myself loose on someones cake!
If im ever having a misbehaving cake day i will take 5 mins out and have a browse through cakewrecks.com. Never fails to cheer me up! haha!
AYeah haha! I think there was a distinct lack of dowelling and cake cards on those though!
AYes tiddy, I like it when they show the cake it should be, then next to it is the cake they get!!
AOh my lord! HAHAHAHAHA! :lol::lol::lol:!
Nothing Roxy, just leaving it now she can just do one. I'm sticking with my plan though. Making sure it's amazing and she's gonna feel terrible.
ARoxy I have trouble getting SP on a cake nice and smooth and without mishap on a good day. It's the most worrying part of a cake for me. Which SP are you using?
AI wouldnt on principle, arguments or no arguments, you must be a really nice person!
ANanny i don't think you need more practice, I think that's easily good enough for a cake. I'm not being kind, I'm being honest.
AI'm itching to assemble this cake.
*chants: must. wait. until. tomorrow. must. wait. until. tomorrow. must. wait. until. tomorrow*
hehe i get like that m4rvel! Sometimes (most actually) i just give in and do it otherwise i just cant settle
