I was curious how everyone prices their cakes.
I offer traditional buttercream frosted cakes of all sizes and I am very comfortable with my prices. I also do "specialty" cakes for customers when they ask for them (meaning special decorations, themes, tiered cakes etc. mostly using fondant).
In general, how much more do you charge for the "specialty cakes"? They obviously require more investment per cake, but also more time and energy.
Any help would be great.
I feel so lost when I have someone interested in ordering a cake and they want an idea of pricing. I never know what to say ~ I don't want to overcharge, but I also don't want to undercharge myself.

Thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

For 3-D cakes I start at $150 minimum, whether it's 10 servings or 25. After 25 servings that goes up about $4 a serving or so, depending onthe design.

If I'm doing a tiered cake that has a lot of fondant accents or gumpaste I'll add an extra 50 cents to $1 per serving to my base price, depending on how much work it's going to be.

Part of it is going to be what the market in your area can bear, but keep in mind that people who want a specific cake are usually willing to pay for it. If they're not, and it's out of their budget range, don't feel that you have to compromise your pricing to accomodate their budget. They need to reconsider their budget and design ideas to accomodate your time and talent!

Thanks costumeczar! Your price range helps a bunch and gives me a pretty realistic idea of how to charge per cake.
I agree ~ if I'm too steep, they will either find someone else, downsize their idea or decide I'm worth it. No matter the decision, I don't want to compromise my profit or time.
I appreciate your response! icon_biggrin.gif

This question may have already been asked but, does anyone know the going rate for wedding cakes in Ga. I'm like everyone, don't want to overprice but not underprice either. Thanks.
