Hi, I'm new here and this is one of the first sequence of photos I've seen. This project looks amazing and totally inspiring!

What an awe inspiring cake idea! There was an exhibit of Dale's glass at the Frederick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI a few years back, and his work literally takes your breath away, in size, shape and especially color.

The Gardens purchased a glass chandelier, similar to the one you posted, only in a different color scheme. I thought everyone might like to see it for inspiration as well.

Good luck on the cake project, and best wishes to you both! I'd love to participate, but don't feel that I can pull it off quite yet, but maybe I'll give it a try.

What is happening with this? There aren't any photos in the gallery. Are people following through? I keep hoping to be able to participate, but my husband has been out of work (without unemployment benefits) since the first of the year. He's still looking and I'm still hoping.

I have the kit and did make an attempt one weekend but I have to admit, this is harder than I thought. The image in my head did not travel to my hands. icon_redface.gif

I keep hoping someone else will post some ideas or instructions and I can just follow them.

nannie--If I were doing a small one I'd roll a snake that tapers to a point, then spiral it around a rolling pin to dry. For a larger one I'd use a length of flexible tubing (this stuff just naturally wants to twist), or several lengths in graduated sizes--each size stuck into the end of the next one. Cut off the sharp edges, sand them down or soften with a hot knife; coat with piping gel; apply small amount of gumpaste at seams to make a smooth transition; apply gum glue; cover whole thing with a sheet of gumpaste and smooth seam. I'm sure there are many other methods--and probably better ones--but that's the one that came to mind for me.

Exactly how I feel, nannie! I thought this would be a piece of cake but mine didn't come out like I expected either.

What I did was poke a piece of wire thru a ball of gum paste about a third of the way down the wire and then rolled it with both hands on the table to make the tube. Then I bent the wire to shape. It took a little work to even it out but with handymama's tips to sand it once it's dry, I think it will work out. Can't wait to see everyone's creations!

It's getting close to the deadline! has anyone finished theirs and sent in?

Jackie, are you getting anything yet? I hope this idea doesn't back fire on you and you not get the cake you wanted.....

I have no experience with gumpaste or I would make you something, If I were to make a creation It would definately have to go in the back!

Well I posted photos of my pieces. I'm afraid that it is hard to make gumpaste look like glass.

I wish I had read through this a lot earlier.... I met Jackie at the Great American Cake show, and could have figured it out with her while sitting at the WE show! Argh!

Has anyone thought of using small balloons for the round shape? I just saw a pack of water balloons at walmart tonight and it got me thinking..... What's the deadline again for us late bloomers?

I believe the deadline for having these to Jackie is June 1st so time is quickly running out since Monday is a postal holiday. I'm hoping that everyone who was going to participate will post some photos in the next few days.

I don't know about balloons. I'm afraid the gumpaste surrounding them would have to be pretty thick because the balloon will probably deflate and a hollow gumpaste ball might easily break. I used a styrofoam ball inside mine and it worked pretty well. I had to cover the styrofoam with a glue that I made out of gumpaste mix for the gumpaste to stick but other than that it works well and is lightweight.

This may sound "cheesy" but just in case here goes: my Aunt lives in Kent and is a fabulous wedding coordinator, if you don't already have one.

This cake is going to be AWESOME!!! How sweet of you to allow all of us to join in your special day. Wish I could come up there!

Just started getting a few peices in! They are all beautiful!

I wanted to remind everyone to include the name of their bakery/business and a return address!

And also to photograph the peices and upload them to the gallery:

I have extended the date to June 5th so everyone has an extra week!

This is so exciting!
