Looking for Publix cake and icing recipe

Thread Starter
I am looking for a knock-off recipe that is something like Publix's basic cake and whipped icing. I am making a cake for my daughters first birthday and I love their cakes but since they won't decorate it the way I want it done, I am doing it myself. Any help would be appreciated!

Publix's basic cake is just a box cake mix, like Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. Honestly.

As for the icing, do you mean their buttercream or their whipped topping? (Publix doesn't make a whipped icing, that's Kroger.)

Curious, how do you want it done htat they won't do it?

To correct prterrell - Publix does make a whipped topping recipe, that comes in a carton and is whipped up and high speed in a mixer. And their cakes come from a warehouse where they are baked and flash frozen, then sent out to all the stores, and no box mix I've ever made was comprable to that of a Publix sheet cake (though their cream cakes rock too! But that is a special request to get a cake made from that).

Um, you aren't correcting me, you're agreeing with me as I said they make whipped topping. I used to work at Publix as a decorator, so I know. The whipped topping at Publix is NOT the same as whipped icing used at Kroger, however.

Can you just purchase a "blank" cake in the flavor/icing combo you'd like and decorate it yourself?

I work at publix and we use super 50(whipped) icing mix and add milk and cream. There cream cakes are nothing but a box mix off the shelf made with milk, trust me!!!Most Publix will sell you their cakes for about $7 a pound and their buttercream for about $5 a pound. There isn't any knock off for there buttercream.hth

Hello my lovely baker friends! I'm also looking for a Publix cake recipe. But I will share the Publix buttercream recipe with you icon_smile.gif

2 full sticks salted butter
2 sticks crisco (not butter flavor)
2 teaspoons butter vanilla emulsion by Lorann
1 tablespoon meringue powder
2 lbs powdered sugar
1/4 cup water (if you want it pipable)

Whip the butter & crisco together for 3 mins on medium high. Add emulsion and powder. Whip again briefly just to mix. Add powdered sugar and whip together for a few more mins. Voila! Happy baking icon_smile.gif

Welcome to the forum, imyrluckystar and Mrs. Sprinkles.   This thread is actually quite old, but sometimes they pop up when you do a specific search.  Thanks for the info, Mrs. Sprinkles.

Is this the recipe that Publix uses or is this your version which tastes similar to Publix butter cream? I love their buttercream icing but could never find it anywhere. I will have to try this some day!! Thanks for posting!!!
