Very carefully slice open mini-packages of Peanut M&M candies and replace them with gummy worms or some other candy that is totally not related to an M&M.

If they are young boys, they'll think it's hilarious.

I can't really remember anything specific, but I know that I have seen a ton of great ideas in Family Fun Magazine. You can go to their website (http://familyfun.go.com/) and search "April Fools." There are a bunch of really fun ideas.

Check out food that looks like one thing but is something else. I saw this on food network a couple of times. They made ice cream sundaes look like nachos. Or here's an original idea...haha...cake that looks like pizza or something.

I will bake a cake/cupcake and dye it pink, everyone expects it to be the strawberry box mix but I will instead add a flavor to it like root beer, blueberry etc.

I went as far one year to make cupcakes for my job that it was my last day at. Everyone kept walking by and eyeing my cupcakes and I said "I'm leaving at 2, you can have them then!"

They were a triple chocolate with chocolate fudge filling with chocolate frosting... but had some garlic and onion powder added to it. icon_lol.gif The chocolate smell was so overwhelming that you couldn't smell oh so subtle hint of the garlic or onion but you sure could taste it.

There was a reason why I made them wait... I heard them screaming for me down the hall as I walked out the door at 2:01. I laughed and let out a loud "GOTCHA!" as the door closed.

I was thinking about making deviled eggs or hard boiled eggs, but making them from cake. Covering the hard boiled ones with fondant would be fun and feel almost like actual hard boiled.

When my boys were little I used to get an empty pizza box and make them cookie pizzas for school. I used to searve it with the clear kool-aid. Made the kids think they were getting water. I've made sushi from fruit roll ups and rice krispies with a gummy worm center. I've also been known to sew extra legs on a baked chicken. The cake deviled eggs that were posted on here awhile back looked real. I'm sure you could do a search for them. There are always dirt cups with the gummy worms or you can do fish bowls with clear plastic cups, gummy fish and blue jello. I remember my son's baseball team always liked the dirt cups. If you were wanting to do cupcakes there are the ones that look like boxes of popcorn or you could do hotdogs using circus peanuts. That is all I can think of off the top of my head but you can always check out family fun like everyone suggested. Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

One year I made each of my son's teachers a mini cake from my "grandmother's original spongecake recipe" Oh yeah, each cake was actually a decorated sponge.

The one that has survivied generations, (my mom used to do it to us) is to make peanut butter crackers. She would cut an index card just smaller than the cracker and put it in the middle. When we bit in, we could not bith through.

Good times!

You have just touched base with the April Fool Queen!!!!

My kids refuse to eat at my house on April Fools day or Halloween!

In my gallery there are fake sushi,
I have meatloaf that is actually choc. rice krispie treats,
cupscakes that are meatloaf,
or even what about the kitty litter cake? That way they are all grossed out but can all dig in. Oooooo, I have so many ideas that I have done to my family!!!!

Just be careful whatever you do.
I took the sushi into work and they all REFUSED to eat it till one brave sole tried and then realized it was rice krispie treats!

I'm getting so excited for April Fools. My kids school lunches also are a great target!! They usually somehow 'forget' their lunches that day so I always have to be one step ahead of them. I love it!!

Have fun!!!

i dunno, i don't think i would want to spend all that time and fuss over something you can't actually eat. what do you do with mustard cupcakes and pepper macaroons when people all get the joke and no one wants to eat them anymore?

Oh how fun! I have the "Hello, Cupcake" book and there are a few ideas in there for April Fool's and they are edible and fun. No one will throw them out lol. There is a corn on the cob cupcake with yellow icing and then different shades of yellow jelly beans on the top to look like kernels or corn with a yellow laffy taffy on top to look like a slice of butter...or TV dinner cupcakes with Runts green candies and orange starbursts cut up on top to look like peas and carrots...or spaghetti and meatballs, tip 3 with ivory icing piped on the cupcakes and ferrer rocher (spelling) to look like meatballs....
If you do not have the book you can go to the library or go check it out at the bookstore...nothing will go to waste because its all candy and cupcakes!

You can always make choco drop candies - mix raw rice in choco;\\
Dip smallish pieces of cardboard in choco (looks like bark)

I really like the idea of the M&M bags. Who doesn't love candy and it's funny. I would not make something that would be gross and not edible. That would be wasteful and the kids are looking forward to eating their snack.

Doing some kind of food that looks like another food would be fun but very time consuming. It all depends on how much time you want to put into it.

Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

Make "baked potatoes" out of ice cream. Take a scoop of vanilla ice cream and place it in plastic wrap. Form the ice cream into a potato shape and place back into the freezer to harden. Then roll the potatoes in cocoa powder to make the skin of the potatoes. Refreeze. Then slice the top open a little and put a dallop of yellow frosting on top to look like butter. If you place them in a baking dish it adds to the effect.

These are really cute and realitic. I had to convince the kids at my nephews birthday that they really were ice cream by cutting one open.

My sister was born on April Fools Day. Last year I made eggs and bacon and shipped them to her work to share with her co-workers.
I made cookies the shape of an egg (over easy) and flooded with royal icing, then flooded vanilla wafers with yellow royal icing. Put a little icing on the back and attached it to the egg. Also cut out pieces of bacon by hand (cookie dough) and then iced those to look like bacon. Then I cut out black skillets from construction paper and placed the cookies strategically. I'll try to attach a pic, not sure if it will work or not. This year she turns 50 so I have to come up with something even better!

This year I plan on reversing the meals. I'll make a traditional looking cake with meatoaf and mshed potatoes for frosting...tomatoes for cherries.

then, for dessert, I will make some kind of food...a turkey, a pizza, spaghetti, but out of cake. icon_biggrin.gif

I did that meatloaf (which is awesome to play with) pie too and dyed the mashed potatoes. I have the pic on my other computer. But here's another one that I did and really fooled them. The meatloaf is actually choc. rice krispie treats with gummy bits in there; mashed potatoes are a scoop of ice cream with caramel sauce (gravy) and the cupcake is the real meatloaf and the frosting is the mashed potatoes. This one they really thought looked real.
