Well I just did one this week (waiting on the pictures to be developed). I got the order Tuesday and byt Wednesday night had all the cakes baked, buttercream and fondant all made. I started decorating Thursday morning and was done by Thursday afternoon. It was only a 2 tier cake and the tiers were 6, 5, 4 for the top and 8,7,6 for the bottom. As for it keeping. I used an all shortning buttercream under the fondant and I talked to the lady today and she said it tasted fabulous. The party was Friday evening. I just loosely covered the entire thing and left it on my counter.

HTH,

Shanna

I would start at least a day earlier. (Or bake the cakes now and freeze.)

Make the frosting while the cakes are baking.

Allow the cakes to "settle" overnight. Plan to spend one whole day assembling/decorating your cake.

You guys are too kind icon_biggrin.gif

missyek, Abba's "Dancing Queen" was always one of my favorites. Think I'll change the title/lyrics to "Linking Queen" for my theme song icon_lol.gif

OMG, that song came out in 1977 - you probably aren't even old enough to be familiar with it tapedshut.gif

LOL I was born in 1977...now have 3 kids of my own.

I agree with Jan though, bake the cakes ahead of time and freeze! Makes it much easier to carve and it's nice to get all the baking done early. I'd say at least 10-15 hours of decorating time, depending on how big the cake is and how detailed you want it. When I do complex cakes I start as many as 3 days in advance and they still taste good. I've been at some of the parties and tasted them for myself.

Post pics when you are done!

I was born in '81 and well know Dancing Queen. My mom played Abba all the time. She was a dance teacher so you'd e surprised at the music I know.

I to am going to be doing a whimsical cake..I hope..For my nieces graduation cake. Has anyone figured out how your supposed to get everything taken apart from when you cut the cake if you use the double sided carpet tape.
