Do You Use The Cake Icer Tip To Cover Your Cakes?

I'm trying to decide whether to invest in the big cake icer tip and the 16" bags. I've always had a hard time getting icing on a cake and smoothing it out. I just watched serious-cakes youtube video and she makes it look so easy with the big tip.
Do you use the big cake icer tip? Why or why not?
Thanks!
Katie
I've tried it in the past. I find it easier and faster not to use it. For one thing, it's two more things to clean.
I tried and found it to messy and then having to refill the bag. I do it faster without the tip. HTH!
I always use the icer tip and it makes icing the cake so much easier for me. It takes a few tries to get the feel, but once you get it, you'll love it. It helps me to get an even amount of icing on the cake and my iced cakes come out so even and smooth. I say try it, you might find that you love it too. You just have to remember to make sure your tip and icing are touching the cake so the icing doesn't fall off. You basically hold the tip in one place and spin your turntable (make sure your cake is dead center on the turntable) and after a few tires you'll be icing cakes in minutes
I also use the 18 inch icing bags, they save time on refilling.
I love my cake icer tip! I get the frosting on quickly and evenly. I just throw the tip and the bag in the top rack of my dishwasher.

I love that tip. I use it all the time. The only thing I did do was push the end together alittle bit more so there isn't as much icing coming through. I also use
plastic wrap to put my icing in first then just slide it in the bag. So it is easy to refill and clean up. I love it so much I have two.

i use it as it helps me get the icing on evenly. i just use the large spatula and the bench scraper to smooth it out.
I have used it a few times, and at first I thought I was so glad that I finally got one, but yes the thought of one more bag and tip to clean sometimes turns me off, and I always end up with just not enough icing in the bag and it's messy to refill. It depends on my mood I guess, sometimes I can't get even icing on a cake if my life depended on it!!
I did in the beginning, but it was more of a pain in the ...erm...neck than it was worth! LOL
I have used it before. I mainly used it when I worked in the bakery at Sams. I liked it when I used it, but I haven't used it since I worked in the store.
I don't use it for a one or two layer cake, but when you have many tiers it sure speeds things up.
The first couple times I used mine it was odd, and I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not, then when I went back to scooping out of the bowl to apply it I realized it was so much more work, time, and I had more unevenness to smooth out then when I did using the icer tip...It makes icing the cakes lots faster, more even, and too you wont pull crumbs into the cake using it,like you do applying it a scoop at a time..You just got to make sure you get the tip close enough to the cake for the icing to make contact so it want pull away.
I'm a true believer in mine now, wish I had used it all along threw the years..Live and Learn!
It does take some getting used to. I like to use Sugarshack's idea of the coupler on smaller cakes and I use the icer tip on larger cakes. It's definitely worth trying to see if you'd like it. But yes, get a really large bag or use the icing plugs to make refills and clean up a breeze.
For me, its WAY more trouble than its worth. And honestly, I don't like being dependent on any more cake specific tools than necessary. If I could only frost a cake with that tip, what would I do if it was lost or I was making a cake at some strange location and forgot to bring it? I feel the same about many tools that lots of decorators love though... I like knowing that in a cake emergency, I could make do with nothing more than a spatula, a few zip-top bags and some scotch tape. Ok, and a Lazy-Susan of sorts.
i have 5 icer bags...i really need more, you can really whoop the cakes out once you get used to it.
i'd hate the thoughts of going to work without them
I love to use them, but don't always use them. I also have squeezed the opening closer (like a pp stated) to control the amount of icing flows out. It really cuts icing time down considerably, especially for multiple layers.
I use it now especially when you have a lot of cakes to ice. When I first started doing cake decorating I bought one hated it. Then after working a Sams and learned how to use it it's great and then had to buy another because I gave the first one away
I love mine too, I think it's a lot quicker than the scoop and spread method but it boils down to preference. I like knowing how to do both methods (just in case I'm ever stranded say on a tropical island) but love the icer tip, definitely a handy invention
O-kay, well the consensus is definitely in favor of the icer tip, so I stopped by Michael's and picked one up today. I also bought a bench scraper; something that I've wanted for a long time. So with my new icer tip and bench scraper my cakes should soon look as good as all of your's, right? Ha Ha! In my wildest dreams! Thanks to everyone for their input, and especially to kakeladi for posting the pics!

I learned to smooth from Serious Cakes too! I love her youtube videos. I haven't had an icer tip, so I was just doing it the long way, but last night I went and made the splurge! I can't wait to use it tomorrow!
I've never used anything but the icer tip. I can ice a 3-tier (6", 8", 10") Wedding Cake perfectly in 30 minutes and I think it would be much longer without it. I use 21" disposable bags so there is no additional clean up and I only have to fill the bag twice. I use twisty ties to tie off the top so that it doesn't come out and I'm good to go...
It comes down to what you're comfortable with but I think you should give it a try and then decide for yourself...

No problem! I get all my supplies & bags from Pfeil & Holing - they are in NY. Since I'm in PA I get everything next day (if you order early enough in the day) and I think the prices are reasonable... The website is www.cakedeco.com and I believe they disposable bags are under Baking Utensils when you click on Store at the top... I use the HYGO bags - the yellow box. There is a blue box called HYGO max but I didn't think it was worth it to use them so I stuck with the Yellow box...
You do not have to have a store front to order from them either...I started ordering from them a few years ago when I was still at my house. Good Luck!
