My SIL has asked me to make a baptism cake for her baby. Apparently she invited 90 people (yes 90 - Dh comes from a big family). She is expecting anywhere from 60-75 people to show up (how they are all going to fit in my MIL house is beyond me, but I digress).

She found a picture of a cake she likes. Cake is two tiers. I suggested making it 3 tiers to get enough servings, but she really only wants 2.
What size round pans would look the best and get the most servings?

Would an 8" on top of a 12" look silly do you think? I'm afraid if the top tier is too big, it will not look right. On the other hand, if I only use a 6" on top, what size should I use for the bottom tier?

I will probably make cupcakes to make up the extra servings.

No, an 8 inch on top of a 12 inch won't look silly - i have used those two size cakes together before. I sat them on a 16 inch board so as it all looked equal from the table up.

I usually like to make my top tiers 6" also but I have done a 12" and a 9" tiered cake before (carebear cake in my pics). I think it all depends on the design and what you are going to have on the top tier of the cake.

If you feel that the 8 and 12 combo looks off, try putting the cake on a pedestal of some sort. The height that is adds will give the illusion of height to width balance.

I agree that if ou put it on a proportional cake board and place something on top...a flower? a bow? then it will look very nice.
