I Need Help Making A Stand Up Rainbow Out Of Fondant

After looking through the gallery, I'm in love with the rainbows seemingly made out of fondant that stand upright and connect two cakes.
However, I'm not sure how to go about it! Can someone offer any insight?
What I would do is put in a skewer or something of that sort into the base of either side of the rainbow let it dry flat and then push the skewers into each cake.
That's sort of along the lines I was thinking, thank you! I'm curious if I should have the rainbow attached to something like cardboard on it's backside for support. Somehow, I'm just not picturing this in my mind very well... ahh!
This is what I did for my #1 and Tigger for my Winnie the Pooh Cake (in my photos). I didn't use anything else to support it.
I think it will be fine as long as you give it enough time to dry out.
I meant to mention that as well, although I think a 50/50 blend would be fine but if you want to use fondant make sure that you do it well in advance and it has completely dried so it doesn't sag on you. The gum paste of course will help it dry quicker.
I was just going to say what jana said - so instead I will "second that motion". Use gumpaste and it will be as solid as a rock. If you have more time to let it dry, you can use half fondant, half gumpaste. It won't need any support other than the sticks to help anchor it into the cakes.
I personally wouldn't attempt something like this out of straight fondant, it could just a easily crumble on you. Unlike xstitcher's fondant 1 and tigger, the arch shape has to support itself in the middle...it needs to be a sturdier material.
I hadn't really thought about gumpaste... hmm! I'm planning to making it first thing tomorrow morning (made fondant tonight and now it's resting) and I need it by early Sunday afternoon.
I had figured on fondant because then the kiddos would eat it lol ... but maybe I should whip up some gumpaste too, just in case
If you need it for Sunday I would definitely use gum paste.
Good luck and post the cake so we can see it.
