I've been playing around with using scrapbook paper for making custom cupcake wrappers. (I could stand in the scrapbook aisles for hours on end looking at all the pretty paper sometimes!)

Anyway, I know lots of people make their own out of different papers, but I wondered if it is safe to use scrapbook paper as an outer wrapper. Obviously the cupcake still has the baking wrapper on it, but what about icing that may touch the scrapbook paper? Can it be toxic? Is it something to worry about with customers and safety?

Man, I wish someone had an answer. I do A LOT of scrapbooking. If I could use some of my beautiful paper to make my own wrappers, I would always make my own. How does one make her own wrapper?

I would say that the paper would probably be safe, but what do I know. If in doubt, I believe that you can iron wax paper onto your scrapbook paper (using a towel of course), which would put a buffer between the paper and the frosting.

Oh that is such a good idea about the wax paper. I've never done this before. That would also keep the grease from absorbing through the paper and staining it. I had a couple of my cupcakes that I did last night do that. Do you just put wax paper on the scrapbook paper and then place a towel over it and iron?

Yeah, the possibilities are endless. I'm not a scrapbooker but when I go through the aisles and see all the amazing things that can be done with paper, my mind starts spinning with the cute cupcake wrappers you could make. I may have to get into scrapbooking after all!

1. do the wrappers have a bottom if so how to you make them ???????

I just got an order from a friend for her son's birthday and he has any army themed party and I want to do camo wrappers. I looked online and found them but they were $6.00 per dozen plus shipping way too much !!

I saw some recently online that were simply a strip of card stock cut to the height of the cupcake. They were run through a crimper, then glued together in a circle. The circle was slightly smaller then the top of the cupcake and supported the cupcake when it was slipped into it. Very cute.

Yeah, I bet freezer paper would work too. I was thinking more along the lines of the wax paper acting as a cling free surface on one side and an adhesive on the other. When you press the paper against the wax side with an iron, the wax melts onto the paper. I don't know which is less expensive. But honestly, if I were making holders, I probably would just use the paper without the wax paper attached. It would be much easier to work with. And I make little boxes all the time to put treats into although those treats are sturdier than frosting.

On these, would you make them fit pretty snug over the original wrapper? I have never used anything other than the ones that you actually pour cake batter into. I am excited. This appears to be a way to pair paper crafting and cake decorating. How exciting!

I have heard of people using the cardboard coffee cup "wrappers" like from starbucks as a template for your cupcake wrapers.- though I have not tried it myself.

Couldn't you just take a cupcake/muffin paper and cut it apart to make a template that would just fit them (maybe a touch larger)? (minus the bottom) that would give you a template that would just fit your cupcakes!

I use scrapbook paper and wrapping paper all the time to cver cakeboards and yes they can have toxins including lead. I cover mine with clear contact paper. I am not sure what to do with cupcake wrappers for this but I would think the wax paper thing would work fine. Also I found a great site for plain colored wrappers...love them. Also some laser cut ones. Check these out.

Thanks for the link. I think that works pretty well. I know I will be tryng that. I have never tried ironing wrapping paper to wax paper but it seems that would be a little flimsy. I would probably affix to some cardstock to make it stiff.

Has anyone played with the wax paper/freezer paper idea? The non-food-safe aspect of the scrapbooking paper that Carey pointed out concerns me.

I'm a bit concerned about toxins, but if you just put the wrappers on right before the party, VERY unlikely they'd do harm... Check with any scrapbook place, and they can tell you if they're food-safe too. There is also waxed tissue paper or floral paper that may work. Doilies are very pretty and I love the crimped paper with ribbon... You can also use special scissors to do fancy cuts on the tops.
