Yep, I think it's time I admitted it. I seem to enjoy it when it goes right, but when something goes wrong - not so much!
And it seems that things go wrong more often than not.

I wish it could just be easy, then I could concentrate on the "fun" part - decorating the cakes!
I think I'm going to use packet mixes from now on.

miscue~ I felt the same way until I started using the WASC recipe. I haven't had a bad cake come out of the oven since! I am also following the gourmet flavor thread and there are sooooo many WASC variations.

Try the WASC. You won't regret it.

Now if only I can find a buttercream recipe!

You can't give up. I had days like this especially trying to bake from scratch. If it doesn't work just use the box mixes work on the decorating part and once you build up your skills maybe you will go back to baking from scratch. It does take time and patience.

OK, if we are doing confession - I might as well add my cake hate. I loathe making BC. Traditional BC leaves PS all over my kitchen and it tastes hideous, so gross and sweet. IMBC which tastes nice is sooo time consuming and often does not go right for me. Death to BC is what I say!

Theres nothing wrong with using box mixes from time to time or whenever you don't really want to spend alot of time baking but enjoy decorating, I know I do. There are some great doctored box mix recipes like WASC and you can search for other recipes here on CC under "cake mix cakes". Good Luck and have fun.

I totally know what you mean! Honestly I wish I could just buy cakes already iced plainly and just decorate them. LOL!

I'm new this the cake world, and I enjoy very much decorating; however, when it comes to baking--- We are in the same boat! I enjoy when things come out right and hate it when it goes bad. Keep trying!!! Practice makes perfection!

Try Indydebi's crusting buttercream, its not overly sweet and have yet to find someone who doesn't like it. Or try Rich's Bettercreme in the freezer section of the store.

I dislike working with buttercream and cleaning up is a chore. After working at Sams I learn to deal with it. I sometimes which I could skip that part and get to decorating but we got to take the good with the bad. To see how my icing is improving after all these years I'll deal with it.

Ok, so now, right this very second, I hate the decorating too!!!!!!!!!!
It's just super frustrating when something doesn't go how you would like it to.
I'm trying to make a shoe box cake...... What was I thinking!? This should be in my too hard basket!

No problem that's what we are here for each other miscue. Oh and I thought that shoe box thing would be easy. WRONG!!! At least not for me either. I'm not good with straight lines even using a ruler.

I have 2 confessions.

I hate baking. Period. I wish I could wave a magic wand and a baked, torted cake layers would just appear.

I hate cake. I make everyone else eat them. lol

I hate to hear two people in one conversation say that the shoe box cake is hard I have the DVD to give me step by step directions, but now I'm wondering if I'm going to even try it.

It seems like after I've baked the cake, torted the cake, filled the cake, frosted the cake (takes forever and that doesn't even include MMF if I do that) I'm so sick of the cake, I rush through the decoration. And that's supposed to be the best part

You should try it, but I have to admit I was one of the "I can do this easily." Leave extra time though, 'cuz it can be a b=tch

I space it out over a couple of days.

If I have a cake due for Saturday, I make/color all fondant on Tuesday.

Wednesday, I bake and make all BC and fillings.

Thursday, I level, fill, and crumb coat, and if there are special little figures or decorations I make them then to allow for drying time.

Friday, I thaw the cake, cover with fondant and decorate. I try not to leave anything for Saturday, just in case something should happen. That leaves me extra time to fix things if I need to.

By spacing it out you arent trying to bake and decorate in the same day. It also helps if you have multiple orders. Its not so stressy that way.

Jayde - that is great advice...I always get so bogged down and tired doing a cake! And I like your word - "stressy" - I'm going to start using that word.

I have been thinking the same thing for awhile now, I enjoy the planning stage sketching and planning what I want to do and looking throuch CC for inspiratioon and I love the end part when it is finished and my kids think that I am the greatest cook in the whole world!!!

I have to admit that I do get stressed out in the actual implementation of the dream....and sometimes I just walk out my kitchen, out the front door and leave everything where it is until I can get enough control over myself that I wont throw the cake across the room.

Whew! Now I feel much better that I am not the only one who doesn't enjoy the whole process!!!!
