How many cups of batter in a Duncan Hines Mix??

Can anyone tell me how many cups of batter is in a Duncan Hines mix that is made according to the instructions on the box??

OR

How many cups of batter in a Duncan Hines mix that has 1 cup of sour cream and an extra egg added to the batter???

I'm trying to figure out if one doctored mix will be enough to fill the Wilton 9x13 pan (it requires 7 cups)

I used to use a 9x13 pan that I bought at a local department store, but the sides were tapered and when you cut the ends off to make it straight, you don't have a 9x13 cake anymore!!
That's why I bought the Wilton pan, the sides are straighter. My baking strips also stay on much better! icon_smile.gif
Pease help!! I have a cake to do on Thursday!

Thanks!!

Hi, 3 1/2 cups of batter is in a Duncan Hines mix. I measure before I pour batter into my pans. I always check how much batter is needed for the pan I'm using. I always measure. If you add 2 cups sour cream you should have maybe 1 cup more?? I'm not sure on that one.

The doctored mix should say what size pan to use for the mix. Is it the Cake Mix Dr? I have that book & it says the size to use on the directions.

Always use more batter so when you level the cake your not using the cake you need~ That comes in handy when leveling!

I hope I could help.

Hi Tracey4,
I always "doctor" my cakes mixes. REGARDLESS of the brand, I use the following recipe per box:

1 cup either water , milk or juice
4 Yes! 4 eggs
1/3 cup oil (vegetable, corn, etc.)
1/3 cup of Sour Cream

I always sieve the cake mix so it comes out without lumps and very smooth. It mixes with the rest of the ingredients very fast.My cakes do not taste like boxed mixes. It's funny, I prepared a cake for a PreKinder graduation and a teacher asked me if I used cakes mix - I said "no everything is from scratch" so she tried a piece. Minutes later she comes back and asks me for a larger piece of cake and says to me " It's delicious! I can tell that you indeed made this cake from scratch, I am a cake c-o-n-n-o-s-i-e-u-r!!! LOL, LOL!

Hope this will help you, what is there to loose? try it.

HI, I have always gotten about 5 cups of batter per undoctored Duncan Hines cake mix. Not sure why the big difference between me and previous poster.

I've never used Wilton's 9x13 pan, so can't help you there.

Whenver I make a 9x13 sheet cake I always mix up 2 cake mixes. Any left over makes great cupcakes for the family- or you can freeze for later. (Like for a bake sale.)

Well, it's Thursday, so this may be of no use to you..but if you look on the inside of the Duncan Hines box it tells you that the yield for one box mix is 5 cups! There is also more helpful info printed inside the box!

I have a silly question. When you are making a white cake do you use only the egg whites or do you use the whole egg? What makes you decide to use milk or juice? Thanks

I follow the same procedure with all cakes. Anyway, I've never had a complaint because the cake was supposed to be white. Once they see the beautiful decoration and taste them.....that's it!!! To this day-no problem!!.
Good luck!

@awela  So you lied and told her everything was made from scratch?  If you make such good cakes and are confident with what you do, why lie?

So you lied?  If you are so confident is baking from a cake mix, why lie about it?
