Wedding Cupcakes--Drying Out?

I love the new trend of wedding cupcake towers. But, do the cupcakes dry out while waiting for the reception to begin?

"waiting for the recepton to start"? So they're only sitting there a couple of hours give or take?

Cake isn't as fragile as some make it out to be. If they dried out "waiting for the reception to start", the only way to avoid it would be put your oven in the back of your van and bake 'em on the parking lot. Take the cupcakes from oven to guests' hand asap!

But we dont' have to do that because cake isn't that fragile.

I was worried because there's always a little section of exposed cake on a cuppie. It just seems that slice of cake dries out so fast, I figured cupcake would too. I'm such a newbie! LOL

Can't tell ya about slices of cake .... when I cut a wedding cake, it's cut and served within minutes (seconds!) so the slices aren't just sitting out. I dont' know of any place that cuts them way in advance.

My cupcakes are iced "wall to wall" ... that's why I never worry about it.

This is a very timely question for me as I'm seriously thinking of having a wedding cupcake tower for my wedding in June. The soon-to-be was joking around one day that we should just have cupcakes. He thought he'd be injecting a little humor into it and little did he know that such a thing exists. That started his mind spinning and he thinks they're a "different" idea. Our wedding seems to be going down the absolutely non-traditional avenue. Anyway..back to cuppies... I don't normally do those. I mean, yes, in 40 years I have done cupcakes, but only when my son was small and it was no big deal. I was wondering about the drying out factor and how soon I could make those for the big day. I am assuming that they freeze just like any other cake? Also, I do cover my cupcakes all the way. No cake is exposed. Since I'm an icing lover and the cake is just the vehicle for the icing, the more the better!

At first I thought I'd try to make those little mini-wedding cakes and then after browsing online here at CC I decided that's probably too intensive and would send me over the top, so to speak. LOL
