Thanks in advance everyone

My questions are about a stand up shopping bag cake:

I have questions regarding construction... do you just make a sheet cake slice and stack???
How do you stablize it?
Is it easier to make fondant panels or just cover traditionally?
Any other pointers by those who have made this type of cake are welcome. icon_smile.gif

The Hollister bag I made was a sheet cake cut up and stacked. I used dowels and cake boards for every 4" of cake for stability. I wrapped the fondant around around the outside leaving a little sticking above the top so the bag looked open. I used tissue paper to hold it in shape until it dried a little. It's in my photos if you want to take a look.

Tiggy2 - I checked out your bag - how great is that! I've never seen a cake like that and I'm one for very unique cakes. Great job. Definately going into my favorites.

I've done a shopping bag before too. I stacked up the cakes and used sharpened dowels to stabalize the cake. Thanks to a CC member...she gave me the advice to cover the cake in two pieces, one piece of fondant in the front wrapped around to the middle of the sides, and another piece from the back wrapped around to the middle of the sides....so the seam is on either side of the cake and not that noticeable.

I made a lot of the fondant pieces ahead of time(flip flop, phone...etc) with spikes in them so I would be able to stick them in the cake. I also did the tissue paper ahead of time and dried it over crinkly saran wrap for shape.

Would you mind sharing what you charged for the "Taylor 13" shopping bag cake and how many it served?

Sure...that cake was a while ago but it was probably about 40 servings and I charged $150-175...can't remember. Either way it really wasn't enough for all that detail work.
