Cant I paint gold luster dust on smooth buttercream the same way you would do it on fondant?

I am making a Notre Dame football helmet cake so I need a large area covered in gold luster dust.

If you are working with buttercream, let it crust a bit and dry dust it on. In my pix the gold monogrammed cake and the chocolate heart's desire cake are done using this technique.
