I have to make 80 candles for a full sheet cake and the customer wants them to stick out of the cake like real candles and not lie flat. She's requested BC icing and I'm not sure what to make the candles out of b/c my fear is that if I use fondant or gumpaste, once they touch the BC that they will start to droop. My husband suggested putting a toothpick through the center of each candle. Does anyone have any other ideas?
you could probably use gumpaste/fondant or even royal icing .. as long as they do not sit on the cake for hours upon hours they should be fine .. I leave my fondant decorations on my cakes overnight and never have any problems ... I do use the buttercream dream icing recipe as well ... but hopefully someone else can chime in!
The cake is going to be delivered the day before the party and that's why I'm afraid about the candles drooping. And, in the past when I've used hard fondant or gumpaste decorations and they've sat for a few hours on a BC iced cake, they always got soft.
oh I see ... well hmmmm ... I don't know what other suggestions to give out ... I hope someone else can help you!
Maybe you could form them all out of gumpaste or gumpaste/fondant and send them in separately with instructions on where to place them on the cake, like normal birthday candles. Maybe pipe a dot or star where each 'candle' is to be placed?
Hope I'm not too late for this.
If you stick fondant into b'cream icing they will soften.
I would make them out of fondant but stick a toothpick in the end which is what will go into the cake. If you make these ahead of time and let them harden before placing them, they should not soften on you.
I made mine outta gumpaste.
roll out long snakes, I used 2 colors per candle.
i used lolly sticks as supports, i also used them to help get the diameter the same for the snakes.
brush a little fondant glue on the lilly stick and wrap the 2 snakes around it. leaving a little room at the top for the flame, and a little at the bottom to stick in the cake.
then just mold a flame and stick it on top!
i dried these by putting them in styrofoam so they wouldn't get flat.
good luck!
Those are adorable, Rocketgirl, but I don't think I'd be able to make 80 of them w/o losing my mind! Thanks for the idea, tho!
ya.... welll.... ive already lost mine..... so want some help? lol.
I only had to make 5!
making 80 of anything would suck.
good luck
