so i'm making a batch of cookies and i pull one tray out of the oven with one hand and slide in the next tray with the other (i don't have any counter space) and what do i do but try to slide the oven rack back in with my now empty hand (and no oven glove!!) so of course it doesn't take long to realize i'm burning my thumb!!! g osh, i'm so silly lol-but it hurts!! i've got a nice uniform line running across the middle of my thumb (and of course it's got to be my left hand too!! i hope i'm feeling better later cuz i want to decorate these cookies (they're for work to raise money for our christmas party) dh said atleast i didn't burn them-and i didn't drop the other batch either lol
Ouch! That has happened to me also. I think it has probably happened to all of us. Hope you feel well enough to finish those cookies.
I don't think I can bake at all without burning myself!
This is my oven and the stove burners pull out like a drawer so I am Always burning myself...
I had a pretty bad burn a couple years ago and my Dr. gave me a prescription for Silvadene cream... that is the best stuff and it lasts forever.
If you can get some it is a great thing to have in you first aid kit..

Battle Wounds...lol! I hope you feel better soon. I have about five marks on my left arm where my commercial oven attacked me. I bought oven mitts that come up almost to my elbows. Now I wear my chef's jacket...sleeves down...with my half sleeve length oven mitts so I don't get burned.
I can definitely empathize with you...I have at least 2 burn marks on my arm right now. Feel better.
Thats a pretty cool oven. I have never seen one like that before. Do you live on the East Coast? What brand and year is that. Sorry, strange questions, but it is so cool!
JaimeAnn - I agree with the need for Silvadene Cream in every medicine cabinet for bakers! My mom got 3rd degree burns while in a jet boat out at Lake Ming many years ago and that's what she used - barely a scar left!!!
Off subject a little - since I don't live in Bkfd anymore, but one of my daughters does...I sent her to see if the cake dec. store was still open - sorry to hear that it was closed along with another store that is listed in the Yellow Pages.....where do you get your supplies?

My Oven is a Frigidaire Custom Imperial. from the 1950's. (back when General Motors made Frigidaire products) I love it and hate it at the same time. I have to use oven thermometers to regulate the temperatures because it cooks at like a Bazillion degrees. I love the 2 separate ovens so I can cook at different temps. and that the windows are at eye level,No bending to look in. It is the same oven that was in Samantha's kitchen on Bewitched... ( I wish I could twitch my nose and a perfect dinner pop out of mine)
I live in Bakersfield California but have lived on the east coast ( Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Florida ) . But most of my life I have been on the west coast, Here, and Oxnard, Ca.

You know its funny, I never burn myself baking, but ALWAYS burn myself when I am cooking like a chicken or something! Why is that??

for the life of me, I don't know why this works. But my Oma (grandmother) treated burns with iced tea mixed with a spoonful of vinegar. It works. It's strange and smelly, but it works.
My mother had a stove similar to that in the 60's. It was really very handy. It's too bad that approach to stoves died out; they really worked well in small kitchens.
I would love it if one of the new manufacturers would make one just like it, but in a Gas version. Anybody know any concept designers from Wolf or Viking.. That would be Awesome!!!!!!
I can't count the number of times I have taken something out of the oven and then went to move the pan a few minutes later forgetting that it had just come out of the oven and calling myself an idiot after I had burned my hand
I burn myself all of the time!! My husband is always giving me a hard time. I have 2 spots right now where I burned myself recently. One on my arm, I hit the inside ov the oven while pulling something out, and on my finger just above my nail, hit it on a hot cookie sheet. Just keep ice in the freezer!!
I burn myself all the time too. The last one was a couple of weekends ago when I was cooking at a retreat for about 20 people...I was making quesadillas in a kitchen that I hadn't used in a while and the one pan was getting too hot so I pulled it from the one element to another one. I didn't realize until it was to late that there weren't heat resistant handles on it, the whole pan was metal! I cooked the rest of lunch running back and forth between the stove and running my thumb and forefinger under cold water!

The worst burn I ever had was at a friend's house. I'd never seen electric burners. Turned it on, waited, waited. Tapped it to see if it was hot. Nope. So I plopped my hand on the burner next to it to see if there was a temp. difference. There was!! -- it was glowing red!!! Had the burner imprints on my hand for weeks. I don't like electric stoves. I will never have an electric stove.
Just wanted to enter in my vote for the Silvadine cream! DH burned his hand REALLY bad several years ago and they gave him a tub of that stuff. He doesn't have any scars on his hand and we have a TON of the cream left. I use it when I burn myself and it works amazingly well!
Uggghh!!! Sorry about the burn! Think most of us can sympathize with you on it! I'm usually pretty good about not touching the hot pans... my curse is the wet potholder that you don't realize is wet until you have the hot pan in your hand, and then it's all about getting the pan to the counter without dropping it. (And it never fails that the counter space has suddenly filled up and there's nowhere for you pan to go!) Hang in there- hope it feels better soon!!!

I'm wondering if it's a German thing. I come from German lineage (and married one....SAUER for Pete's sake...can't get any more German than Sauerkraut, right? ) Anyway...my dad always swore by vinegar as well for burns. I can remember when we would get sunburned as kids, he would douce us with tons of vinegar...we didn't smell very good, but it sure took the sting right out.
I agree, that oven is super funky...I bet the design comes back around again!!!
Lavender essential oil is great for burns. I didn't know this until a few months ago. I had burned the back of my hand (on my oven in my new home... it is not like other ovens I've had). I had gone to a playgroup, and another mom said to use Lavender essential oil. I was sceptical, but she had a spray bottle of it in her purse and sprayed my burn. It was great.

I know the OP's burns are better by now, but in a pinch soaking a burn in milk is great for taking the sting out and also helping take the burn down. I burned the backs of my fingers on Thanksgiving Day and soaked them in milk for a while. Before the guests left the house the blisters were gone and the sting was too!
Ouch!! I had to read your post. I still have a couple of bad burn scars on my leg from this past spring. It was from an iron, tho, not an oven. I'm sorry you burned yourself. It just hurts!!
All those oven pix makes me wish I had one!!

That was the same oven my parents had when I was a little girl. When we sold that house when I was 5 my mother was reluctant to leave the oven trying to tell my dad that the new one should go in the old house and that one come with us. She'll be so jealous to know someone still have one and it still works.
