Ok, so I have had this offer on the table a while, but now I feel that I am at a place to accept this offer. My husband used to be a teacher at a local kids cooking school, the lady who owns the kitchen says that if I do a cooking class or two every month that I can use her kitchen to do my cakes. I am kinda nervous, but i feel like if I can teach my friends who have no desire how to decorate cakes, then I can teach other people who want to learn! They already have a catering license and I have my food service certificate from the state, what else would I need to get or have? Any suggestions would be great!

That sounds like the perfect scenerio to get started on your own cake business. If and when you do start doing cakes for paying customers, I would get my own insurance to cover yourself and your personal assets. I use The Hartford and really like them and believe they are reasonable.

Your cakes are beautiful and I am sure you can do this. I would write up a small contract to cover yourself while in her kitchen, not liable...etc. Even though you know this woman, still cover yourself as much as possible. She is a business person and will understand.

It is scary but I have had my own business just over a year and I am still scared. We will always be scared and nervous, but it's how you respond to it that matters. Walk through it and you will be so happy you did. Congratulations on a great opportunity!!! Keep us updated.

My dsl ate my first post here so I'll try it again.

You will need a fein which is a federal employer identity number which you will need to get a state tax number, a business license, a business checkng account so suppliers take you serious as you establish credit, and various inspections including the heath dept and the code boys.

icon_biggrin.gif Having fun yet?

Oh oh oh and an insurance policy.

Congratulations!!!

Also make sure that their catering license covers baked goods. It sounds weird, but the kids' cooking school where I teach classes had to apply for a waiver to let the kids take their cakes home after they decorated them. They could take other food out, no problem, but not the cakes. Weird, but they did have to get special permission from the health dept.
