I received a note via DD today from one of the other Kgarten teachers in her school. They celebrate their 100th day of school on Friday, and all week deal with groups of 100's... her note stated how much would you charge for 140 cupcakes for our 100th day of school? Now normally I charge $8 for a dozen simple iced and sprinkled cc's. That averages out to 66.7 cents a piece. When I calculated that out to feed 140 I got 93.38. That just seems like a whole lot of dough to ask a school for. I doubt they would even pay that. Do any of you have any suggestions as to how I should handle this? DD is gluten free due to celiac as of 6 weeks ago, so I have cupees already baked up for her in the freezer.... so really it would be 139, but that is apples compared to the overall question. Any help would be great!

If you are feeling SUPER generous, charge them for the ingredients. That is a lot of cuppies to bake and frost for free though. I volunteered to make 100 cuppies for my son school (and they don't even get to eat them ). My DH is gonna kill me when he finds out

yeah I was thinking that might be what I do. I have done a lot of things for teachers there, but I didn't want them to run to walmart because I knew that DD might get glutenated if that happened! It is hard for a 5 year old to say no to a cupcake... I learned that lesson when they visited the nursing home to Christmas carol, and the was given a chocolate chip cookie by the nursing home caretakers... she couldn't say no, and I paid for it for a couple days of belly aches...

My friends little girl has the same problem (she's allergic to like 5 different things). My 1 year old "shared" his cheetos with her, and she wasn't feeling so hot later. I felt soooo bad.

I think I would just charge them for the supplies. At least that way you know your child will have a "safe" cupcake and imagine all the smiles thanks to you.

I spoke with the teacher in charge this evening and said I would do it for $50.. which coms up to about .36 cents per cup-ee... she said "well we normally get them from Walmart".. I haven't checked their prices lately but I know it can't be too much cheaper than that. I wanted to scream, I am not wal mart and I am doing you a favor, but she kept mentioning walmart and their prices, yadda yadda yadda. Supposedly she will call tomorrow, but I don't expect a yes. If I get one I will be happy with it because I know my quality is above walmart, but we will see. THanks for all the tips and suggestions thusfar.

I wouldn't charge anything. Instead I would get a receipt for the donation and then use it against my taxes.

first of all Wal-mart charges about 7.99 per dozen and I would let them just go get them from there... she was ugly to say that(although I am sure it was only to get you down on your prices). But if It were me i would do them free or at cost with the condition the gave me a donation slip so at least at the end of the year i could recoup(sp) some of what I lost... I hope it all works out for you. I fully understand what position the schools can put you in when they find out you bake..... last year I did 300 train cookies for my daughters 1st grade classes (polar express day) NEVER AGAIN!!!

As a previous teacher's assistant I know that we preferred for our parents to send the small bite size cupcakes to school. That way there was less waste, as well as a little less fuss. The cupcakes can be still as beautiful, as there larger counter-parts, but cheaper to make, and decorate.

le me just add... I did agree to do the cookies and it was no way a forced issue...but boy was that a lot of work...LOL! Guess i came off sounding a bit harsh but it just stumps me sometimes... Our schools do need our help and I would much rather their money being spent on my childrens education( I have 4 girls 15,13,6,4) all of whom will be attending the pubic school system.

everyone figures cost differently I suppose, but I feel like $50 is a good deal because again she couldn't get them at walmart for that. I don't think she was being ugly, just trying to get them cheaper. I have already baked some cc's for dd that are gluten free so she will be set. I have to ensure that she isn't glutenated. She also told me they order a Dr. Seuss cake in march from Walmart for their Dr. Seuss theme... so maybe she will change her mind when she see what I can do. I don't beg anyone to take my product. I just feel like if you can get it from me at discount for the same or less than wal-mart, it would be a slap in the face to go to wal-mart... does anyone else feel that way?

well sadly she probably just tossed in the walmart name to get you to lower your price, because if she were to go to walmart and buy 140 cupcakes she would be spending around 94.00 if they were 7.99 per dozen, so you know she wouldn't be getting them cheaper there! i say keep with what you had originally quoted because you weren't the one that offered to make them but were asked to make them. and if she decides to go somewhere else, take in one of the cupcakes you made especially for your daughter and let the teacher know of her special needs. no need for her to have problems because they don't know a good deal when they see it!

she decided on a sheet cake instead. Again I told her I would do it at cost, which is probably not completely true because I am not making any money out of pocket and going in the red after cost, but at least I get some of it recouped. I need to know what size sheet to do? She wants to get 139 servings from it, but says they cut it into bite size amounts so the kids don't get it everywhere... any suggestions?

cupcakes would have been better...you can measure 1/4 cup of batter per holder and get about 48 per batter where as a sheet cake you can only get about 24 servings per batter unless you do a really thin cake... and I would not do that.
