I know the main part would be Get the skull in but WOW... any one?? She said it was for the rehersal dinner and needed to feed 50-75.

You might try a mold for the skull on the front http://www.directfrommexico.com/mexican-folk-art--dod-sugar-skulls.html and make it out of chocolate or press the gum paste in and paint???

Here is the ship I did for my daughter birthday...the picture kinda sucks

One thing you might do is tell her that it probably won't be exact. A lot of times people get an idea in their head & are upset when it's not exactly like a picture. Tell her every cake is unique & you don't do exact replicas so no disappointment

Here's a link that might be helpful.

http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-556493-pirate.html+ship+tutorial

The little ship in my Veggie Tales, Elmo, & Dora cake was about 6 1/2" front to back & 4" wide. It served about 20. I also took pics of assembly if you want them send me a pm & give me your email (easier to email pics than pm). It may not be exactly how you want to do it, but may give you an idea.

Here is a picture of a pirate ship I did

http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1274088

There are other angles of it in my gallery but basically I took two 9x13 cakes and carved the basic shape. For the masks I used wooden dowels and the sails are gumpaste. I cut all of the boards out by hand and positioned them on the cake. Then I airbrushed the cake brown and then painted the boards for a wood grain effect. I hope this helps some. Oh by the way dont underprice this cake it took me forever with all the detail work.

I live in Tampa so I've had this same request. But they just wanted a Bucs theme, not the actual ship - so my cake might not help if that's what they want. It was a few years ago and I can't find the pictures now to save my life! I've got to get more organized! I've attached my sketch, though...if it makes any sense.

I did a bottom layer decorated in the pattern that's on the side of the ship. Chocolate covered strawberries (FYI, we're the Strawberry Capital of the world and this wedding was at the height of the season when the strawberries are beautiful and HUGE and yummy! - and a big favorite of the groom) around the top of that layer - with numbers for the star players in red. The top layer I used an edible image of the flag.

Hope that helps a little.

I just reread your post and they do want the ship? I've been in that stadium and you're not even looking at very good pictures - there's SOOO much detail and intricacy in that ship I can't imagine how you can do it justice on a tiny scale like that. Have you been able to get a better look (in person)? I'd love to know how it's coming along. I guess you're right, the skull is what's important. I look forward to seeing it!

thank you Everyone!!!!!!

Ok ;
Foster creations:
I will need to feed about 70 people but the pictures do help

Galler: I chose to hand sculpt the skull I will attatch the gumpaste skull for everyones opinion.... and the picture is fine.

dandelion56602 :
Thank you this will be a great help!!!

karensue: thank you so much for your help on this

sweetreats0901: VERY COOL. And I love the monster look but I dont think they need it icon_biggrin.gif

Clovely: I will be using this for inspiration. thanks.
I have NOT seen the ship. I did as another CC member recomended....Let the bride know this would NOT be an exact replica and I would do my best.... Maybe You could email me and I can show you what photos I do have. [email protected]

I am still not quite sure how to get the look I want I'm thinking about 2 12x18 Cut in half length wise so they would be 4- 6 x 18. stack 3 of them for the body of the ship so it will be about 6" tall and 6" wide and 18" long.....and then using the last layer to add the back end, captins quarters, to the top back end of the cake.
and then adding By the way I love sketches!!!!

The skull looks awesome! Great job. Just remember when stacking to use your internal supports & don't do more than 4" high before using another cake board! If you have any ?s I can help you with don't hesitate to pm me! And post a finished pic

Well the cake is due to be delivered Friday (tomorrow) May 15th at 3 so I am getting there and have made a lot of parts and things to dry but I still need help. (sorry) I need to make the front pattern on the ship. I am looking for tips or ideas on the coral color....but its not coral can anyone help get this the right color and maybe a few thoughts or ideas on the patter? AI'm not sure how to start it....OH I'll do it but two heads are better than one and more than that helps a lot!!!!! so let the ideas flow.

Oh I have about 3 hours this morning before I need to be moving on this
I tried to past pictures but no luck. BUT I am taking photos as I go of parts and the cake itself. if anyone is interested email or pm me.

I wish I could have responded earlier, but I've been having problems w/ my internet.

As for coral color I think I would go with orange & add a little pink, or you can go vice versa. Not sure of the coral color you're wanting. You can add a little red if you need to.

For the details, if you're using fondant it shouldn't be hard. Roll out some fondant & cut strips & glue them on. For the "scroll" looking things if you have a clay gun it'll come in handy, if not just roll out snakes of fondant. Then for the "cloud" looking detail you can use a round tip & buttercream. you can go all buttercream if you want to to. For the flat strips, the back side of the basketweave tip. Round tip for the scrolls. You can "draw" where you want it w/ a toothpick before piping

Hope this helps

I'm assuming your referring to the details around the skull b/c that's what I'm referring to

Awesome!!! If you don't mind sharing, how much did you charge? I'm new to this and I've never ever imagined doing something that took 30ish hours...Did you have an idea ahead of time that it was going to take so long? I can only imagine that must have been one expensive cake!

Well I think for ME the fun is in making the cake. And the second time (probable wont be one) I make it it will go much faster. I charged 2.75 per serving (I know but I live in Idaho) plus $50 for the fact that it is a 3 D cake. All my 3D cakes have a $50 min.....
