Most Hated/sick Of Seeing/tired Of Making Cake Design

Has there been a thread on this????
What is the cake design you are most tired of making?
I am a newbie, so I haven't made alot yet but I am sure sick of seeing Tiffany Boxs and "Designer" Purses. This is all I ever get asked about!!
DORA!!! I'll be doing my 5th one later this week, and it's just getting OLD!!! Way too many colors to mix, too!
I hate the current trend of dots and scrolls with ribbon around the base. oh my god you need almost zero talent to do these, they look plain and simple .... and I'm one that thinks wedding cakes should be tall and opulent and be the Grand Centerpiece of the Reception!! give me stringwork with buttercream roses cascading down the sides of a basketweave 5 tier cake ... PLEASE!!!!!
(big sigh!) But they pay the rent so as long as they are ordering those dots-n-scrolls, I'll be making 'em!!
I might get smacked for this, but every wedding I have been to lately has had an all-fondant covered cake. Whatever happened to good old buttercream? (yum, licking lips, wishing I could dive in the middle of a vat of BC and eat my way out )
My Blue & Brown Paisely cake and Jungle Babies cake, I love both of them but after making one or the other at least once a week for the past year I want to scream. But like indydebi said they pay the rent so I make them!
You would think people would'nt want the same cake their sister, cousin and best-friend all had, but it never fails, when one orders they all want it.
Lately most of my commissions are the customer looking at a cake I did (not realizing that I DO NOT replicate cakes) and say "I want that one." Okay, like I already did "that one" and I'll do a different one for you. "No, I want that one." Okay, put up your dukes, now yer gittin me mad!
Spider Man! So tired of him and have 4 more spider man orders before the end of the month!
Red--I cringe evertime someone tells me they want red on a cake.
I'll answer from the "want to see more of" perspective. Buttercream!! I can tell you all that you'll see at least one more of every category - scrolls, purses, etc. - because I'm going to try my hand at everything at least once. HA HA! I'm a newbie which means I'm not tired of anything yet but I sure wish I saw more buttercream magesties. I guess that mostly applies to wedding cakes, but I just love the over-the-top romantic centerpiece. I guess i'm stuck in time. I get tired of seeing the art deco kind of stuff. (Just my humble opinion)
So when you see a sad looking little purse and you think, "Ugg.. not another one, and ugly at that," please look anyway and comment. I'm sure I'll need it!!

As for me I am a "Part time" cake decorator but I have done pretty much tha same wedding cake round in the floating tier stand with roses around the boarder 5 times! I was so happy when my friens requested a hexagon shaped cake with lots of piping work!!! Only problem is it's been so long since I actually had to put supports in for divided tiers I dont know if I even remember how! It has been at least eight years!
Here's to hoping memory serves me well!!!!
Here's one I haven't done but I'm sick of anyway -- the topsy turvy cake! (Ducking head as things are thrown at me...) I just don't find those wonky cakes attractive in any way.

Hey Cindy!
I understand the not "wanting" to do repeats, but when it comes right down to it - if a customer is offering you money, would you seriously turn down an order because they want to duplicate something you've already done???
I'd have lost half my orders one summer (literally!) when I took a display to bridal show w/ fondant draping zig-zagging down the front of a cake w/ a small arrangement of flowers at each zig/zag point.... I think of my 50 some weddings that year, I would seriously guess about 20-25 of them were that same design, just variations on the drape & flower colors. Talk about sick of a design - but as already said, it paid the bills!!!
I actually have 3 orders on the books for that again this summer... I soooo hope that isn't a start of something again! ~sigh~

Here is a cake that a bride and I sat down and drew up... she really wanted these dots. Fine but man there are so many polka dots of so many different sizes to cut out! I put it on my website and sooo many brides have wanted it in their wedding colors!! Ugh... I am sick of making this cake! And to top it off, people have been ordering it for Birthdays too!
I too am very tired of the scrolls, I have a wedding show this weekend and I am not doing one display that is covered in those darn things. I am however doing quite a bit of the ribbon wrapped around the base. I am also tired of doing those but they seem to be very popular right now so I am doing a few displays of those but also trying to throw some funky in there
I'm a little tired of the seashell cakes and the cakes with fondant drapings. They are all starting to look the same to me. Since I live in Florida, there will always be beach weddings and the beach themed wedding cakes. As everyone else said, it pays the rent. I also agree with bobwonderbuns, the topsy turvy cakes have definitely lost their charm, and I strongly dislike doing them.
I rarely do repeats. I have a lot of brides ask if they just pick something and change the colors. I say, if you are absolutely in love with a design, that's fine, but no, that's not how I do things. And most of the time they are good with that and we come up with something different for them. Since we live at the beach, a lot of people want 'beach cakes', but I think I do a pretty good job of encouraging different ways to incorporate a beachy feel to the cake.
I don't like doing any of my cakes a second time. haha. They are always fun and exciting the first time. But I always groan when someone orders something off my website. "AGAIN????" haha.
Well this is from my own personal stash. I loath making cakes with that darn rope on it!!!!! Same ol' same ol'!!! BORING!!!

There are a few designs that I'm getting tired of seeing, but PIPING GRASS is one that I'm getting tired of doing. My gosh...that's what everybody around here wants. A border of grass..fine, but they want an entire cake of it.

See what I mean?
i don't really do repeats i always change something. but i don't like cakes that have a lot of red red or black on it. i hate making these two colours and i think it really horrible to feed black or red fondant to the kids... mickey mouse for example.

You are not alone on this one... it looks like a 4yr old leveled the cake in my opinion...
Happy to know i'm not the only one who doesn't like them...
I kind of don't like doing the same cake design again either. I almost feel guilty for repeating, but if that's what the customer wants, that's definitely what I'll do for them.
I'm also getting really tired of the white-on-white piping with different patterns on each tier, scrolls, dots, piped diamonds, etc. I can do those in my sleep now...Just kill me!
I'm tired of the topsy-turvy cakes as well, and cupcakes. Not that there aren't a lot of adorable cupcake designs out there, but it seems that there's been 50 cupcake books and magazine covers out in the last couple of years. I'm also sick of the purse cakes.
I don't get too burned out on designs as far as doing them, but I get tired of doing the same flavors all the time. White cake with plain old vanilla BC icing and filling, or if they're REALLY daring they'll get raspberry puree or strawberry BC filling. I wish people would get more creative with their flavors, or ask for unique flavors I haven't done before. And my family only wants chocolate cake for birthdays. I usually sneak and do different variations of chocolate and chocolate icings and fillings, and I love chocolate, but I'd like to experiment a little more.
I hate kit cakes and cakes made in character pans and decorated with the star tip. Won't do either. Icky.
I like looking at all cakes no matter what design. I'm not tired of any of them yet, except maybe the kit cakes.
Making the cakes is another story though. I did so many beach cake variations that they even spilled over into beach cake sheet cakes....and I live no where near a beach. I'm in MI.
Where I live the basic old BC design with flowers is still normal. Thank goodness that's starting to change though. If it wasn't for CC I would hardly ever (if ever) see a cake other than this.
my mini cakes!!!! Im so sick and tired of them has done it in every colour imaginable. This year I have upped the price so much that the two enquiries I got last week never phoned back
But I still have two orders for next month

I second that! And of course, as my avatar not so subtly suggests...SHEET CAKES...(of any kind). But, props to those that make beautiful ones!
Well I must agree with other I have never done a Topsy-Turvy cake but I really don't want to.
I also agree about copy cakes as I call them. I tried explain to the customer that I don't like to do the same cake once but if they insist I tell them it is not going to be exact and hope that will change their minds. I have only had one person ask for the same cake still..
i agree, sorta, with the topsy turvy cakes. if they are done *well* (nati, fran, helen, etc) then i *LOVE* them. BUT i think they are difficult for most decorators to get the "look" right...
