Butavan Flavoring?

How many of you gals actually use Butavan flavoring (from Earlene's) in your buttercream recipes, and how do you like it?

I've just ordered the small container, but just wanted some honest opinions about it.

Oh, and does anyone have a good receipe using it that you would be willing to share?

I've tried it a few times in my buttercream but to be honest, I really prefer my mixture of vanilla, almond and butter extracts.

Is Butavan just a mixture of butter & vanilla flavors? If so, wouldn't you get the same effect just using some butter & vanilla extracts in your cake? I was going to buy some today, but the shop was out of it. (I drove 1 hr 20 min. away from home to the only place I could find that carried supplies -after calling yesterday & them saying they had all the things I was asking for - only to find that they didn't even have 1/2 of what i needed... icon_mad.giftapedshut.gificon_sad.gif ) They informed me, though, that I was pronouncing Butavan incorrectly and that no one down here cared for it too much anyway, I shouldn't waste my money, they said!?! What a way to gain a new customer!! lol Sorry to get OT...I'm done...lol icon_redface.gif

I was going to ask where you got supplies and then I finished reading! That's so typical! I have been curious about that stuff too. Good question wandootie!

..I read that it had a butterscotch smell to it, which sounded good, but my nose must be different! icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for the feedback, guys. It should be here in a couple of days. I'll let you guys know what I think after I use it.

After all, you don't know how far a dill pickle will squirt until you squeez it, right?

I got an 8 oz. bottle of butavan for 8.00 with the sole purpose being to try it in my icing. I made 30 qts. of icing yesterday and the stuff was all gone before I was through. It did give my icing a nice flavor, but it's no better than my normal recipe using vanilla, almond extract and butter flavoring. When I can get Mexico vanilla for $1.50 a litre, why would I buy 8 oz. of this stuff for $8.00 ??? I can't afford it.

Honestly, unless I have a customer specifically ask for butavan, I won't even buy it. It's too expensive, when I can just use less costly flavorings and get a flavor that may be just as good if not better. Just my opinion, but butavan tastes like cotton candy flavoring to me. It's not too bad, I just don't have a demand for it in my area.

I'm glad you liked my expression. Actually it's not mine, originally. I picked it up from a wonderful man that I had the privledge of working with for 18 years. He passed away in December 2000, so I keep his spirit alive by using some of his crazy expressions.

Although, I have to say, he did border on the perverted sometimes (most of the time), so I can't say MOST of them here, but he had managed to extend by vocabulary with silly sayings.

I really do miss him, he was a great boss and spoiled me rotten. Just one example is that on my birthday, secretary's day and Valentine's day, he would have roses on my desk when I got to work in the morning. When I would comment on how nice and pretty they were, he would say "Thank you. I pick them up at the cemetary on my way in this morning".

My husband grandfather was the same way Wandootie, and now my husband does a lot of the things his grandfather used to do. He drives me nuts sometimes, but he does keep life interesting. He'll be in a room with square tiling on the floor and call one of the kids over for a talk by saying, "Stand in the circle". Or he hands me something and say, "It's all urine pee pee." Nuts.
