Does anyone use a cricut for cake decorating? If so how? A friend of mine said they saw an infomercial for the Cricut cutter and they were using it for cake decorating.
I bought one last Christmas specifically to use in cake decorating (I also now use it to make signs for the shop). I originally bought it to make letters to use on cake boards (instead of wasting fondant). I do a lot of shaped and sculpted cakes and often there is no good place on the cake to put the greeting. I was using ABC cutters and fondant, until I saw the Cricut infomercial and had the brainstorm. Now I keep a supply of card stock on hand and when i need to put the greeting on the board I use the
Cricut. It really was such a waste making the letters from fondant....nobody is going to eat the letters that are gum glued to board.
I always tell my customers that the letters are non-edible.
Now, if I can muster up the courage to try a icing image sheet to cut out letters that can be placed directly on the cake. I'm thinking cut out the letters, leave them on the backing and lightly airbrush on the color. Then free them from the backing and place on the cake. What a time saver!! I emailed the makers of Cricut to see what they thought but have yet to get response.
I got mine at Wally World; their price is cheaper than the one on TV unless you want all the stuff that comes with that offer. The tools are not that expensive and you probably have things you can use anyway.

I did try the Cricut on frosting sheets and it works great! I am going to try and use it to cut circles out of chocolate transfer sheets to fit the oreo cookie molds. I am just concerned that when I drop in the transfer sheet circle in the mold then add the chocolate that it might seep under the transfer sheet. I have some on order and will be trying this as soon as I get them.
You can use the pens and make patterns for transfers with gel. I had a lady do this in class and instead of doing a rainbow for Wilton class she did crowns for her princess.
Worked like a charm.
Mel,
YES i use mine all the time, especially working with fondant. for a baby shower cake i made a onesies and used it as a pattern for the fondant!!! Its so useful!!!!!!
I've been looking at these for a little while. DH says that I need to get one. After reading this post, I just told him I AM GETTING ONE!!!!!! can't wait to hear how it works with the choc. sheets. Keep us posted. Thanks for letting me know that it has been tried with cake stuff.

Thank you all so much for the info. I've been looking at these for awhile and since it could do double duty maybe it's a worthwhile investment.
Do you use the personal cricut or does anyone have the cricut expression?
I KNEW I should have asked Santa for this!!!!

Nothing's more fun then getting a new toy!!!
Hi all,
I got my daughter a Cricut Expressions as she likes to scrapbook, but hearing that I can use it for cakes is uber exciting!!!
Is there any way I can take an image off of the Internet (say for example, a scroll pattern) and somehow get the Cricut to cut that image out of cardstock so I can use the page as a template for airbrushing? Or are you absolutely stuck buying the cartridges?
Thanks!!
I think that is possible from what I was reading about it. But I don't have one (yet) so I'm not sure. Maybe you could check out some scrapbooking forums and find that info. Sorry I'm not much help.
OK So I just ordered my Cricut! I ordered the Cricut Expression. I am so excited!! There's so much you can do with them. I'll report as soon as I start creating!!!!
nefcook!! Please don't forget! I'm definitely watching this thread with bated breath!
My Cricut has arrived! I've only gotten a chance to play with it a little bit but so far it's amazing. I do scrapbooking too and it will definately come in handy in that area. As I get to know it more and learn what all it can do I'm sure I'll be able to incorporate it into my cake decorating as well.
If anyone has used a Cricut for decorating cakes I would love it if you would share pics, instructions, tips, etc.
The only way to find a scroll online and cut it with the cricut is software called Sure Cuts A Lot (SCAL). I haven't bought it yet but a lot of people swear how great it is! Some of the accent cartridges have great swirls and circle designs though!
I am excited about the possibilities for caking..... hadn't thought about it!! Think it would cut fondant??? Just kiddng and NOT willing to ruin my bug trying!
Martha, thank you so much! That is exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to download and try it out when I get some free time. I am so excited about the possibilities this has for caking. Thanks!!
Before you buy it look around.... sometimes you can find it for as cheap as 40-50 dollars. Also do a search for scroll .scal files to save time on designing your own.
im sooo excited i found this post. i have a cricut expression and i love it. but i have never tried to do anything for cakes yet. i thought about cutting out a rabbit for easter but didnt get to it yet..im interested in finding out about the frosting sheets and choc transfers..i cant wait to try.
I have the regular Cricut and love that (I do scrapbooking) Wow I wonder can I use that or does it have to be the
Expression only? I do use stamps and stuff for cake decorating ( only for food). I'm curious to watch this thread, someone is always trying something new , lots of crafty minds on here.
I was thinking of using the cricut to make a pattern to make my own cookie cutters using the tutorial that is here on Cake Central for cookie cutter making?
What do you think?
I have the regular Cricut and I can only use the cartridges that have the premade shapes in it so I don't see how that would work, how you could make your own unless you were using a shape that comes with the cartridge.
Now the expression is the new cricut 2x the price , I don't know what all it does, maybe it downloads from the computer then you could. Why can't you copy something from online and just shape the cutter to it.
You know google image of a whatever? Good luck and let us know what you come up with and post us a cookie picture.
i have a cutter that hooks up to your computer and cuts whatever you can get on the screen - no cartridges to buy! it is a craftrobo. i haven't actually broken mine out of the box yet, but a girlfriend has had hers for a while and loves it!
are you guys putting fondant in the cricut or having the cricut make a pattern that you are using to handcut the fondant?

^^What she said. I have a Cricut, too, but haven't tried it for fondant but would LOVE to if it works!
So many cool ideas. I'm fairly new to cake decorating and have never seen transfer sheets. Where do you buy those?
The page previous to this one I believe they said they were using the cricut to cut fondant don't have time to look again at the moment. Again, I don't know if it's both cricuts that do this or just the expression.
