I am just wondering if candy melts (non Wilton) can be used to make chocolate curls. I bought a marble pastry board the other day and I have Milk Chocolate Flavored A'Peels made by Guittard. I wonder if those will work. I've never made chocolate curls but I have a new chocolatier book and I want to give them a whirl! I'm trying to keep from hauling my two kids out to go to the store to buy chocolate chips!

I don't see why not. I make chocolate curls using a hunk of almond bark and a potato peeler!

I'll have to try that next. I went ahead and melted the melts and made curls and shavings and it worked great. I just wanted to give them a try for a "for the fun of it cake"! I just finished it and am posting it now.

Amy those look great! I'm usually a Hershey bar kinda chocolate curler but sometimes I go through so many to get the number I need. I did a choc/choc covered strawberry cake with a ton of them one time (in my profile).
Then when you mentioned the candy melts, I realized OOH! More colors! Duh! It's early I guess?! That's a great idea!!! One question for you, how thick did you make the slab??
Thanks and you did an awesome job!

The chocolate was probably an 1/8 in thick. I just poured some on my pastry board and started spreading it with my rubber spatula until I though it was thin enough without seeing the board through the chocolate. It didn't take much at all. It took a little more than a hand full of melts. I took my large blade knife and used a gentle sawing motion left and right, left and right to get the curls. Depending on how much pressure I used I got shavings sometimes and curls. I might have let my chocolate sit too long to get really good curls but this was my first time trying. I think I let it sit at least 15 minutes.

I'm going to try colored curls today!!!

Good luck!!!!!!! Thank you by the way, forgot to mention that in my opening.

You can do anything with real chocolate.
I think those Wilton disks are just easier for a beginner to work with.

Your curls look great! I love yours too Mama Frog! You guys keep making me want to try something new. Today I guess I'd better stay focussed on the orders I have for this weekend. Cake one and two are cooling now and cookie dough is mixed.

Do you have any examples with real chocolate that we can see?

I wouldn't say that b/c the chocolate cake in my profile was one of the first major cakes I did and that was with a Hershey bar! Can't get much easier than a bar of chocolate and a veggie peeler! I think what she did seems harder. All I did was unwrap it, half for me and half for the cake! icon_redface.gif
