I would fold a blank piece of paper in half and draw one side of the tiara, then cut it out. Use this as a template to cut out a piece of gumpaste. Then use several different fondant or gumpaste cutters to make the tiara look lacey. Lay the tiara over the side of a can or bottle and let dry.

Use luster dust and disco dust to make shiny and glittery.

Classiccake, my one and only crown was done just like you said, and more of a crown than a tiara, just as Sugarshack said.

I got a tracing table for Christmas last year and it was a great help in drawing out my design.

I LOVE my tracing table! I used to hold the paper up in the window to trace...hard holding it upright and trace.....and downright impossible after the sun went down! icon_cool.gif

When I opened it, I kind of had a huh? moment. When my MIL said she thought it would help me with my cakes the light bulb went on. I can't draw anything free hand. But now I can trace anything I can find!!

hi!
i just made a crown out of gumpaste for my daughters birthday cake.
you can see the picture under my photos, its the pink and purple cake.
i didnt get time to decorate it. (long story i tried RI but it didnt work so i was literally making this crown at last minute.)
anyways, it was really easy. i just used a gumpaste and pressed into a mold, you know the kind used for chocolate molds. once i saw the gumpaste was fully in the mold, i took it out of the mold, carefully so i wouldnt stretch the gumpaste and put it around a coffee mug to get the curved shape i wanted. i also inserted two tootpicks into the bottom of the crown so it would attached to the cake easily.
once dried i painted it gold. like i said i wish i had more time to decorate it.
im sure any mold, crown or tiara would work fine.
good luck!

I did a gumpaste tiara for the top of my pillow cake - http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_1137583.html
Here is a close-up of the tiara - http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_1051663.html

Here are instructions for how I did my tiara. There might be better ways but this worked well for me. I hope this helps you!

Tiara tips:
I tried making royal icing tiaras first. I tried twice, and both broke (several times!) and so finally I gave up and tried gumpaste instead. Soooooo much easier!!!
For the gumpaste tiara, I started off following the instructions for the royal icing tiara in carrielynnfields' article http://www.cakecentral.com/article113-how-to-make-a-royal.html . I used missyek's tiara pattern that I found here on CC - http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_84163.html . I traced it onto wax paper, and taped the pattern to a cylinder (with no lip!!) per the article instructions.

I used Wilton's gumpaste mix. Since I was wanting my tiara to be pink, puple, and silver, I tinted the gumpaste first. ** I think tinting it first made it easier to paint later because my painting did not have to cover quite as well, since I wasn't trying to make white gumpaste purple, kwim? But it also made the construction process more of a pain, since I only had one extruder, and so I had to keep washing it out to change colors quite often. A monochrome tiara is also very pretty and would be easier /faster to make I think - Missyek's is beautiful - http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_40442.html
- Used a clay extruder to make the silver bottom line of the tiara.
- Starting in the middle of the tiara, I did the first large heart. I just extruded a long piece of pink gumpaste, and then carefully curved it into the shape I wanted along the pattern. I used gumpaste glue (approx 1 part gumpaste dissolved in 5 parts water) to get it to stick to the base of the tiara. I also sometimes used gumpaste glue to help it stick to the pattern (so pieces wouldn't fall off my cylinder).
- Using purple gumpaste, I extruded pieces of gumpaste to make the purple curlies inside the large pink heart, to either side of it, and above it. I usually shaped the pieces using my fingers, sometimes using the end of a paintbrush or something small like that if my fingers were too clumsy. I used gumpaste glue (rather generously) at every point where pieces touched each other.
- I worked from the center of the tiara out, so that I could make sure I kept it pretty symmetrical.
- I omitted some of the finer details in the original pattern as that was too hard for me to accomplish in gumpaste.
- I added the silver bits all over at the end. I just shaped those with my fingers and stuck in place with gumpaste glue.
- I let it dry on the cylinder for a couple of days. I'm not sure how long it needed but I let it dry a while since I had never worked with gumpaste before.
- To get it off the cylinder, I removed the tape holding my wax paper to the cylinder. I then slid the wax paper and tiara off the end of the cylinder (this is why no lip is important ). I then peeled the wax paper off. Voila!
- Lastly, I painted everything using pink, purple, or silver Luster Dust with vodka.

- Because it was a pain to clean out the extruder so often, I originally tried making all the pink parts and then all the purple parts. This works a little, but not great. The gumpaste dries very quickly, so you really need to be able to put the pieces on the pattern as you go, so they will be properly curved. If I were to do it again, having two extruders (one for pink, one for purple) would definitely make it easier and faster. The silver bits I added on at the end when I was finished with the pink and purple.

My tiara was quite strong and I never had any breakage at all using this method. I did use gumpaste glue liberally while constructing it, and I tried to make sure that pieces touched other pieces in several places just to make it as secure as possible. I think you could do a tiara like this well in advance of when you need it.

I hope these tips help you!

Maggie

I too made 4 royal icing tiaras before I gave up. They all broke when I tried to remove them. I even put one of the tiaras in the freezer for a week. I put 6 layers on that particular one....they are just very, very fragile. I ended up making this last tiara out of gum paste. I used a gum paste glue recipe off of wilton.com. Works well for me. It is 1 tblsp of meringue powder mixed with 1 tblsp of water. You can make it as thick or thin as you would like. Just paint on with a paint brush. I ended up using a toothpick to sculpt the small areas on mine. I just made the gumpaste tiara 3 days ago. I am going to remove it tonight and paint it. Wish me luck! I plan on using the tiara to go on top of a pillow cake for my daughter's 2nd birthday. I will post pictures soon! Hope this helps!

I absolutely love the idea of doing te tiara out of gumpaste. I don't usualy have too much luck with royal icing so I know doing a tiara out of Royal would be tricky for me. Thanks so much I am definetly going to try your idea first before I start messing with RI!

I have a question for those that tried to make it out of royal icing and had the trouble with it breaking - did your royal recipe use egg whites or meringue powder? Wondering if egg whites make a possible stronger result as with stringwork?

I love the idea of the gumpaste clay gun technique but have no clay gun yet.

My Royal Icing recipe has meringue powder in it. Does the egg white recipe have more elasticity maybe and holds up better?

The royal icing recipe using egg whites is stronger than meringue powder versions. It does not save well though so you have to use it up the same day you make it. It lasts indefinately once dried -- I usually use my leftover to make leaves because they are quick and I can always find places to use them.

Thanks, that sounds like an idea to try next time I use RI.

Hi! I want to start on my gumpaste tiara now but I just finished making edible glue out of tylose powder and water. Instructions say to leave this mixture in the fridge overnight but I'd really like to begin the tiara now to give it enough time to dry.

Can I use piping gel as glue for the tiara instead? Will it hold up as well?

I personally wouldnt trust it. If you need a quick fix perhaps you could try candy melts or even a bit gumpaste dissolved in water. Good luck!!!
