Jeanne - it looks like there is one beginner (me) and one advanced (you) in the loser's corner. If no one signs up that is advanced, do you want to just compete in the intermediate group like I plan to do? If that is okay with the Intermediate folks....come on....that will help us step up our game and push ourselves knowing we are competing with an "advanced" person.

Lesley - yes, you guys can pick whatever you want.

Shirl - I love the Flapper Theme also....I'm in for the Flapper Theme!!!
(Loser's Intermediate Group)

i was thinking about either something artsy and contemporary, or an inspiration theme...

where we take something non cake related and have it inspire a cake... we all do this with invitations so i thought that would be cool...

you know a painting, an invitation, some wall paper, a picture, a dress...

and then when we post the pics have a pic of the inspiration, and the resulting cake,...

just a thought

Lesley, I really like the inspiration idea. That way we don't really need to pick a theme necessarily. It will be hard to judge though!

it wont be,,,, i dont think
it is mostly how you used the inspiration, and if you nailed it..

maybe for some people it will be hard

but i thought it would be cool

Does anyone have the current rules they could post?

pinklesley1 Cake Central Cake Decorator Profile
pinklesley1 Posted 29 Dec 2008 , 10:03pm
post #37 of 278

I Found the rules and thought i would post them in their entiretly instead of a link

so here you go tiptop...

Here are the Throwdown Rules:

1. Any member may challenge another CC member to a TD. The TD will all begin and end on the specified dates so all pictures of completed cakes can be uploaded for judging at the same time. This will make it easy for all CC members to judge each TD photo, and, all winners can be announced at the same time.

2. Throw Downs will begin on the first day of every month. Photos are due to your designated poster the third Saturday of the month. which gives one week for voting unless it is a five week month then it will be the fourth Saturday of the month. You will have until 3:00 PM CST on that date to get your pictures sent to the designated picture poster of your particular TD. (Exception: unless other arrangements have been made by your designated poster.)

3. You may submit up to three photos for judging and photos must be consistent between both contestants. Perhaps, front shot, top angle shot and a close-up. Photos must be pre-sized for message boards at 640 X 480.

4. A description should be included with your photos.

5. Fondant, Gumpaste, Sugarpaste and/or Buttercream can be used, you pick your mediums to decorate your cake. TD challengers may use any decorating medium combinations they wish as long as it is edible, (no fresh flowers, cold porcelain, plastic or toys of any kind).

6. Loser is the poster of the new throwdowns. This means the loser of a TD will upload pictures for the subsequent judging.

7. Straight sheet cakes are not allowed with the exception to be used for sculpting cake designs and must be sculpted.

8. Throwdowners should be as equal in decorating skills as possible. If you are a TD winner please try to be fair and choose a member with "equal to or greater than" decorating skills you possess.

9. With the exception of sculpted cakes, dummies are allowed. 3-D sculptures may only use Styrofoam where absolutely necessary.

10. Competitors may use wires, straws, and dowels for supports. These supports should be hidden in the cake and not visible by viewing the cake.

11. Wires used for sprays, flowers, leaves, etcetera, but must not be inserted directly into the cake/dummy.

12. The two TD Challengers will choose the theme of cake to be designed.

13. Any non-winning CC member may only participate in a throwdown one time in a 12 month period. Only the current winner of a throwdown will continue on. Once this winner loses he/she must wait 12 months before participating in another TD.

14. Everything on the cake, including the cake, has to be crafted and decorated entirely by the CC member without help from anyone else (i.e. no store bought pearls only hand crafted.) Exceptions; throwdowners may have help with the cutting of cake boards or structural support.

15. Only two members may compete in any particular throwdown, however, many Throw Downs may happen at one time. A TD isn't a TD if there are more than two competing against each other.

16. Largest cake board used may not exceed 14".

17. Cakes can be one tier but no more than three tiers and they may be separated or stacked. The size should be determined by the TD competitors prior to the start of the challenge so each cake is judged/voted against a similar sized cake.

18. Participants are not allowed on the actual voting thread during the vote. Exception: participant may concede. The board will open up to throwdowners after the winner has been determined.

19. The designated poster has the right to point out infractions of the above rules on the original voting post.

******************************************
revised 6/18/08
These rules supercede any prior posted Throw Down rules or guidelines.

My suspicions became evident....that when faced with competition, even a person who'd never picked up a spatula(slight exaggeration) could whoop a 'seasoned' decorator.

Vicki, I don't have any qualms about who my opponent is....I'd be happy competing with anyone from someone's 5 y/o cousin to Sylvia Weinstock ....

I'm just here for the party!

My DH is so terribly silly(pot calling the kettle black here)

"Stay in the advanced group. Make a cake for whatever theme it is and no matter what, you're the winner. Just like in politics, if there isn't someone to run against...you're the winner!" he said with a ta dah kind of tone to his voice as he got to the end of his speech....

I wanna compete with others...

I'd prefer NOT to do a superbowl theme, BUT beggars can't be choosers, so I'm happy either way.

By the way, my name is:
Kristi (forgot to mention)

All4cake: Speaking for myself, I'll let you in our group............I'm not afraid of you.......oh I do think of myself as advanced, in more ways then one, but as the thread divides the group I fall under the intermediate.........so like I said, I'm not afraid to let you in......LOL

I was thinking... In our LOSER bracket, perhaps we could make two groups, one for under three years decorating and one for over ? That way we'd still have more than one group... Just a thought, but I'm still game either way!

And I vote for a music theme, but like I said, I'm game for anything! icon_biggrin.gif

Loser
Intermediate

My personal preference is Vintage - 1920's theme - Flappers, Gangsters, etc.

If I have to do a Super Bowl Theme - then I will seriously consider hanging myself first!

So my thought is to get together with my group, Tina/Cocorum21, Lea/TeaKakes, Jennifer/Kansaswolf, and K2Cakes for their input.

Gang - Your thoughts please.......

Out of the themes listed my personal fav is "Black and White".

I am with you on the Super Bowl! Save a rope for me!! icon_lol.gif

tiptop57....uh....well....I ain't gonna lie...I'm afraid of all of you! LOL I think of damn near everyone on CC as advanced! One person, in one year may do as many cakes as another in 10...

I say one big group of winners and one big group of losers then the winners of the two face-off.

That's what I initially wanted to do, but a few people raised the question about skill level. So that's why I did it like that.

If everyone wants, we can do one Winner's TD, one Losers TD and then have the winners of each TD compete in the final SMACKDOWN! I almost prefer that!

Well to be honest, I have seen beginners that could give an advanced decorator a true run for the gold medal and then in turn, (but please don't take offense anyone) I have seen advanced decorators that are more than happy to use a #16 tip to cover the entire character cake for every creation.........

I think it is in how you describe your own level of talent that counts in the end.

Okay. I can't see anyone complaining so here is how it is going to play out.

All the Winners on one Team compete against each other!

All the Losers on one Team compete against each other!

So, Here are the Teams!

Team 1 - WINNERS
Theme: Inspirations
Contestants:
Jill/Jillmakescakes
Stephanie/Snowshoe1
Stephanie/Stephaniescakenj
Lesley/PinkLesley1
Brandi/Brandisbaked
Grace/Sugar_Plum_Fairy
Mary/Mariu

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Team 2 - LOSERS
Theme - ???
Contestants:
Tina/Cocorum21
Shirl/TipTop57
Lea/TeaKakes
Jennifer/Kansaswolf
K2Cakes
All4Cakes
Vicki/Trixyinaz
I believe this is what All4Cakes suggested in the thread that I started asking if everyone wanted to do this. So, this is how it is going to be. I find it exciting having to compete against such talented CCers regardless is they are way more advanced than me!
Then if the winners of each team is up for it, they can compete against each other and be named the Ultimate 2008 TD Winner. Since we have never done this before, the rules seem to change as we go along. Next year will be much easier once we establish everything this year.
Okay, off to shower and take the kid to swimming. If I weren't so "voluptuous" (as my old boyfriend calls it), I'd go swimming too.
So I guess Team 2 Needs to pick a theme. I like the Black and White Theme, the Vintage 1920's Theme and your fFavorite Cartoon Theme
