Because it looks quite a bit different than the magazine cake it was to be based on icon_cry.gif . It is Cinderella's castlesque and the magazine cake has much taller towers than my version (even though I followed the instruction to the t!). I tried to make taller towers but they kept sagging and cracking during drying, plus I don't think they would have survived the journey (the ones I have are solid and secure). The castle sits on top of a cloud which in the magazine looks cloudy & voluminous, mine looks like a white lumpy mountain!

I fear I missed the mark with this one and that my B&G will hate it (they are Disney obsessives). I know I have to walk into the reception looking confident, but I just don't feel it, what do I do?

BTW my OH thinks my castle actually looks better than the magazine one, but I disagree (and yes, the B&G will remember the magazine cake, she made me scan and send the picture to her when they signed the contract!).

Can you post both pictures on here? I'm sure it looks great. All your cakes do.

I won't be taking a photo of mine until it's set up at the venue, then I'll post them both later.

Remember that you can not match another cake exactly. Everyone has their own style of decorating and that alone will make a difference. I am sure it looks just as good as the pic does. We are our own worst critics ya know. Good luck and post a pic.

I'm sure it's beautiful even if it doesn't exactly match the magazine (who can do that anyway, we can't even match our own cakes exactly each time). All of your cakes posted here are great, you are probably being too hard on yourself.

I'm sure it's beautiful.....just remember those cake in mags are air brushed pictures....that's why they look so perfect....I'm sure they will love the cake

forget airbrushing and all that, most of those cakes aren't even real. If this one was sculpted, then yea maybe it was real cake but I doubt it was for an actual event so they didn't care how long it sat out while they decorated it for a week.
I'm sure you're just being too hard on yourself, i'd love to see it as well. Hopefully you'll feel better about it after its out of your hands.

Remember these words when you take your next cake order:
"Thank you for the picture. However, I do not copy cakes. Someone worked long and hard to create that specific cake for their customer and they are the only person that can really duplicate it. I would like the opportunity to do the same for you. If you can tell me the elements of the cake that you like most I will incorporate something similar into my design".

I've used similar words for 11 years and have never lost an order because I wouldn't copy a cake design.

I just looked at your photos...and your cakes are beautiful! I am sure you are insecure...and it may not look like the picture. But, if you kept up to your standard quality of work...they will love it!! It may be a lil' different, but they will be just as happy with it...if not more!

Do you mind posting the picture of the cake you are trying to replicate....I am at a loss in the visualization department. icon_smile.gif

Attached is the photo of the original design and here is mine:

http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_1293822.html

The wedding planner didn't seemed impressed and when I said that I hoped they liked it she said 'so do I' in a worried tone. The colour changes were by request of the B&G and it's built onto a board rather than the cake itself because they wanted to keep the castle as a keepsake.

Honestly, I like your version better. Your castle came out beautiful. I'm sure they were very happy when they saw it.

I think it looks great. In my opinion, looking back and forward between the two....your spires are more proportional!

Me too, I like yours better!! maybe your mind was just set to come up with an exactly replica, but good thing you didn't!! honestly I think the original cake turrets are way to tall and pointy...yours are perfect! I wish some day I could make a castle like yours!

I totally agree with the previous posts - I like yours better. I would be very surprised if the B&G aren't thrilled with your cake. Great job!

I just looked at your version of the cake and it is stunning. We all really are our own worst critic. Relax and know that you have done a great jon and I am sure the B&G will love it too.

The only difference I can see is that on the original picture, the pointy roofs are taller.

But your cake is just lovely. Honestly.

Definetly let us all know how much the B&G loved it. Your cake is way better than the original. I think DDiva's 'schpeel' is brilliant and I'm going to remember that!

I agree with everyone else your cake does look great and I already put it into my faves, I am sure everything will turn out well, and I too think the peaks of the cake you replicated are too tall. I repllicated a cake from the American cake Decorating Magazine for Halloween and It did not turn out the same either but my daughters classmates loved it.

I got the two pictures mixed up and thought the original was the one you made. When I first saw them I thought, "Oh, she's right, the original is better". Then I realized that what I thought was the original was really the one you made. It is so much prettier. I love how sparkly the rooftops are!!!

Good job.

I love your version. It is much better than the original, I honestly would never choose that style cake based on that magazine picture but may have chosen it based on the picture of yours. If the B&G don't love it, they're crazy. They should thank you for making their cake even better than they asked for. Please let us all know what they say.

It looks fine. Stop worrying.

Apply these rules to future cakes.

1. Always (!) tell a bride, "Guaranteed NOT to look exactly like the photo." I use this phrase and it works just fine.

2. NEVER ask someone, or say in a worried tone of voice, "Gosh, I hope they like it!" I set my cakes down and loudly proclaim, "Oh would you look at that cake! Brim, you are a walking cake GENIUS!!!" icon_biggrin.gif Confident. You are ALWAYS confident!

That wedding planner can go screw. Your cake is beautiful! I too thought your cake was the magazine one and thought the other was better. icon_lol.gif Turned out I had them switched.

I'm curious about what the bride and groom thought! I bet they loved it!

Yes Mom icon_wink.gifthumbs_up.gif ! I know this, but today was hard, plus add to that the usual argument over how to handle a real cake with an arrogant, ignorant Dutch male venue manager (who forced me to raise my voice at him in order to be heard - idiot!).

As many have said before. "We are our own worst critics!" Your cake is beautiful, it is YOURS! The proportions are perfect , the colouring is wonderful - and with the revisions that the B&G wanted, they already know it will not match the mag pic. Take a deep breath and feel your success - you deserve it. icon_smile.gif
