I am making come decorated sugar cookies for a lady who is going to send them to her son in the military. I was thinking that by the time they dry-couple of days, then she ships, and he gets them, wouldn't they be spoiled or not so good by then. I am thinking a couple of weeks old. Is there a preservative I should use. Or should I tell her that I wouldn't ship them because they might not be good by the time they get to him. My first non formal order, I do not have a business. A friend just asked me to do this for her. Thanks.
Anyway to keep a cookie fresh or last longer without making someone sick?

Hi Nello,

I have shipped mine from CA to Afghanistan with no problem and now that we are in VA, I have shipped them to HI without a problem either. I use the NFSC recipe and Antonia74's RI and never have had a problem with spoilage. If you do ship them, I would recommend packaging them in cellophane bags vice plastic (sometime the plastic can impart a 'taste') and wrap each one in bubble wrap due to breakage. However, when I shipped that batch to Afghanistan, they were just in a holiday tin and did fine without breaking.

If you use these recipes, no preservative is needed. I have had people eat my cookies weeks after I made them and have never had a problem. Many recipes like this one say they hold for 3 - 4 weeks, although I always prefer people eat them sooner as they are fresher that way. icon_biggrin.gif
