Okay, truth be told, my DH has said many a time that pork is his favorite food group and he hopes and prays that one day I'll be able to formulate a recipe for a pork flavored cake filled with pork cream covered in pork fondant sprinkled with pork rinds...oh! and I also have to serve it with a liquified pork drink. How's that for a cocktail...don't think he's joking, if I succeed I'll be his hero.

I have never laughed so hard on a cake forum in all my life. I can't agree with any of you more. My 12-year old daughter has made more professional looking cakes. Did you all see the layers smooshing around while she piled on the frosting??? icon_surprised.gif

Too funny. Maybe that's why it is "semi homemade." Semi, meaning train wreck?

These questions are for everyone here...please..no one get offended but I just have to ask...Out of all the kids birthday parties you've attended or just parties where kids were in attendance, was there no liquor at all? No beer? And if there was liquor there, do you share your concerns with the person who is throwing the party? Given that you don't like liquor being "flaunted" at a kids party do you stay or leave when you realize that there is liquor there? I'm asking because I've been to alot of kids birthday parties and I've seen coolers of beers, wine, wine coolers and even some hard liquor. I don't think it has anything to do with morals, its just something that people don't really think twice about. I don't think that people say,'Oh we shouldn't buy that case of beer because there will be kids at the party'. IMHO, no one probably thinks about it!

First let me say that I am not offended at all BUT you did ask for us to answer your question. NO, we do not allow alcohol at kids' parties. A few years ago we had a birthday party for my husband's nephew. We grilled steak, made a cake and decorated the house just for him. MIL, party boy and his mom showed up over an hour late because MIL couldn't find a liquor store that carried her bottle. When they did finally arrive Dh explained to her that we do not alcohol at kid's parties. He gave her the option to put the bottle back in the car and stay or go home and enjoy her drink. She chose her drink. This really pissed DH off as we don't see his side of the family often, they live 1 1/2 hours away. When MIL left that also meant birthday boy and his mom had to leave as they all drove together. Now, we know his mom has a drinking problem, we have tried and tried over the years (when we lived near her) to get her to realize this but it never sunk in until about a year ago. (this party I'm speaking about was 7 years ago)
We have always had this "rule" of no alcohol at kids' parties and yes, we do leave (or ask before going if there will be alcohol) when we are invited to a child's party. It is a personal choice that my husband and I have but we don't look down on anyone who chooses the other, that's our perogative (sp) Also, if it's just a family gathering or fun get together, or holiday it doesn't bother us if there is alcohol. We have talked to our children about alcohol, they know the pros and cons of drinking but we just feel it's wrong to have it at a kids party KWIM?

As for SL, I can handle her and her show on occasion. She has some neat decorative ideas and that's all I'm going to say LOL

Merry Christmas to everyone.

I clicked on this thread & was watching the video. My 15 yr old son walked through the room & saw it. He told me he saw it on the TV the other day when she made the cake on the show.

When she broke out the bag o' icing, I said, "Oh, My". My son said, "Mom, just wait, it gets better. You're gonna die when you see the licorice".

All I have to say is ... I couldn't believe my eyes.

Ohh gosh...another Sanda Lee thread, I'm in.

Love the concept, most of her ideas, though not the healthiest, are realistic to real families. And not just families, but think college students that have to live on a budget. I have several friends that call me and ask for advice when they need to make something pretty without any real effort. I have a few semi-homemade recipes of my own (ex: I use store bought pie crust and frozen mixed veggies for quiche). BUT, she is SELLING these ideas and this information. She's not passing it along in a "This works for me, you could also try this" sort of way like other chefs, such as Rachel Ray, do (not that I'm a Ray fan either - her voice bugs me).

Doctoring a cake mix is helpful to a lot of women, decorators or not, THAT she should be teaching. Not passing her opinions as facts that are going to lead to some else's families "Christmas 2009" dog-ate-the-cake-of-the-floor story.

And the cocktail thing, well...My daddy has been an alcoholic since before I knew what an alcoholic was. I remember covering it in health class and thinking "They have a word for it?!?!" He used to take me to "Family BBQs" when I was little. These were him and his friends drinking and smoking to excess for hours on end, then driving me home. I was alone for those evenings and he usually forgot to feed me dinner. Very routine. Hows that for family memories? Thank the lord for my Momma, she saved me when I was a teenager.

sorry to go so off topic, my point from all that was that if an adult wants to have a beer at a family type event (a real family event, with adults and kids) then that is fine but getting drunk is absolutely not ok to do when kids are around. If things like that happen at a wedding or a restaurant, well, you cant control it, but a private party yeah it can be stopped.

Oh, and I have decided that I am going to email this thread along with a photo of myself to Food Network. I can cook better than SL, thats for sure. I'm still a young'un, too. Count how long till I get my own show... lol

This thread made me chuckle. I don't watch her anymore but I must say, watching her make this cake was very, very hard for me. I don't even care about the semi-homemade thing I am a scratch baker but I don't care about people baking boxed cakes or store purchased frostings...everything starts from a box or package anyways!! I just thought it was sloppy and the cake looked like if I had to move it from the kitchen to the dinning table, it wouldn't make it. I am not dissing her at all I am just saying that telling someone how to support a cake is not that hard to do.

Rachel Ray not selling her ideas? <insert rolling eyes smilie face> Not in her magazine not on three or four different tv shows, countless tv specials & apprearances, nor with her kitchenware, neither on spots with the tv shopping channel. Not selling a thing. icon_biggrin.gif

Me too. Same dance different tune. But I attended some Adult Children of Alcoholics meetings once and they were helpful. Even just getting some reading material about it is very helpful. Just a little idea for any of us with similar backgrounds.

Oh sweetie, I didn't say she was a Duff Goldman, she just makes things that look better than a sloppy cake buried under an avalance of frosting roughly the same shade of a bridesmaid dress from the 80s. But she's artistic and has attention to detail.

My 12 year old shouldn't be on TV... neither should a bunch of folks. It was a light hearted comment with comedic value. Don't take it so personally. icon_razz.gif

I think what I ment by selling is that she gives no other options. Like, she doesn't mention alternative ways of doing things. She didn't mention that you could use dowels or cookie pops or anything else to support a cake. I guess what I'm trying to say is difficult to articulate...sorry...I think I need some chocolate cake icon_smile.gif

Okay, I think I MIGHT be turning into Sandra Lee! Tonight while I made soup out of leftover instant cheesy mashed potatoes, broth from a chicken I baked earlier and leftover carrots (seriously I DID do this and it tasted GREAT!!) I was dressed in my black leggings; black sockies and black oversized T-shirt while standing in my black and white kitchen!

I didn't make a cake though. I just ate a Little Debbie Christmas Tree Brownie for dessert! OOOO! I could have frosted an angel food cake with dark chocolate canned frosting and put my trees around it! THEN I could have put...what....Red Spice Gumdrops in the center of the cake?

Sorry, just had to jump in. I actually like some of the things she does and her biography IS amazing. In fact, when I get my own Gran B's Better Leftovers Show (that's the name I've chosen) on Food TV maybe she'll come and be a guest! LOL

Okay, now "I" need chocolate! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL and TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!

Well I think she has some good ideas on meals, cocktails, and decorating, I like to watch her every now and then, because seems to me there is to much perfectism (if that is even a word) in her details and that gets annnoying. Either way my respects to her for coming along way and being where she is now. I must say that cake's are not her thing and they sure are sloppy.

Yeah, I mean it's gonna be a long lonely night for her to be waiting up for ICES to be calling to do some classes at the next convention, but it's a teevee show. She's doing a whole meal or evening or event of food plus table decor and kitchen decor in 30 mimutes I think. Not to mention her own outfit usually coordinates too.

Definitely she can take her licks for show content, and we can dish it out for the cake issues but not for herself.

When one of us lays a big stink bomb cake we don't jump her and say she's stupid or something. Nonetheless what she did might sure a been stupid but we temper it.

She's just like you and me you but she's got the show and nice success a great figure, money, some fame. I can't knock her for that. Let's be happy for her.

I mean when Indy* gets her show we all got her back too huh. icon_biggrin.gif [highfive]

Direct quotes from the comments section for the Kwanzaa cake (I almost pee'd my pants on some of these):

"if i can give 0 stars to this train wreck of a recipe, i would. corn nuts and apple pie filling? it's like a goat threw up its stomach contents and sandra decided to turn it into kwanzaa cake. bad, bad idea"

"I made this cake for my Kwanzaa-celebrating friends, and they simply could not stop talking about it. They have stopped talking to me, however."

"Well, needless to say this cake sat relatively untouched after the first person who tasted it almost gagged. I would recommend that you not waste your money on this concoction."

"This cake is a hate crime!!!!!!"

"I made this recipe for breakfast for my husband. When I got home from work it was gone so I thought he had loved it, but it turned out he had taken one bite of it and gave it to the dog. Now we have a $1000 vet bill. " (this poster even made it again so she could taste it and said it wasn't that bad).

How funny...at least she received some feedback.
