I was watching foodnetwork while my baby was asleep on me. Sandra Lee Semi Homemade came on and just as im about to change the channel I hear her say she is making a beautiful Noel Cake for your Holiday celebration, and that you wont believe how beautiful it is. Ok after the 500 dollar cake with cookies on it I had to watch. It was horrible. She only filled the very center of each layer, I mean 4 inches in from the edge there was nothing. What that would look like when cut I can only guess, plus wouldnt it make the layer crack in the middle since the edges werent filled and level? Anyway then she begins to frost this thing. Well lets just say I will never feel bad about the not razor sharp edges on my buttercream cakes ever again. Really she needs to not go the cake route anymore. Find a different kind of desert to focus on. This thing was awful looking.

She uses plastic baggies for pastry bags just cutting off a corner & squeezing out huge blobs of icing that she pushes around w/a spatula just a bit.
But, but........she did say to suport the layers........Uuuummmm she just put a cake circle on -- NO support - No dowels of any kind - just the UNcovered cake circle. "That should hold your cake". YIKES.

I saw it this weekend and was mortified. It makes me look like a decorating genuis!LOL! I almost fell of the couch when I saw her creation. It literally looked like a 6 year old did it. I agree, she needs to stick with something other than cakes! Im glad I am not the only one who thought that!

Seriously? This woman has a show? icon_eek.gif No wonder people balk at bakery prices! Why pay $3+/slice when you can do it yourself with a garbage bag full of canned icing and some licorice? What. An. Idiot. I can't believe people watch her.

.........With pie filling in the middle!!! ......

Now wait a MINUTE............ many of us use & recommend pie filling - canned pie filling! for filling of cake.

Yeah, I've used cherry pie filling with chocolate cake and a kirsch wash. That's actually good.

But then, I know how to support AND frost a cake.

I'm not sure why everyone is bashing Sandra Lee. Her whole philosophy is to simplify cooking or baking by using store bought items. She has never professed to be a chef or cake decorator. Obviously for those who are very serious about their cooking or baking they would not use her ideas. But I do believe for a majority of folks who hate cooking, she has found herself a niche and a following. To each his own as they say.

She had some nerve using the term "attention to detail" while making that cake! icon_surprised.gif

What is so sad to me are the women who watch her show, who think those are "nice" cakes, and they honestly think that woman is "so creative!"

I think leahs has her pegged perfectly ... she IS a cakewreck!

That was hideous! Even if we put the cake decorating aside (if that's at all possible), her mitchy-matchy clothes/stage set/food drive me nuts! I can't believe people enjoy her show. I'd rather have bamboo shoots growing out from underneath my nails than watch her show (I'm sorry - was that a little harsh?) icon_twisted.gif

Ok I dont typically mind her but I want to see that cake after sitting for an hour or so to see how those cake boards "supported" the weight of that cake. But they dont show that on TV when the bottom layer is blown out because it wasnt supported properly.

well lets look at it from another perspective... with any luck, a ton of people will watch that and say, hey i can do that... when the cake collapses, they'll come running to all of us the next time they need a cake and maybe not balk at the prices so much! Can you imagine if she had leveled that wrong, how many of us can level a cake with a knife? I bet her viewers are going to be creating a lot of leaning towers of pisas!

If you look closely, you can see that her layers are not level. When she's "filling" and stacking, you can see how lopsided they are.
