I want to make a dummy cake because I want to practice without wasting a cake, but I have never done that before. Can someone tell me if I actually ice the styrofoam before laying my fondant on it like I would a real cake or do I put something else under the fondant or just lay the fondant on the dummy cake solo?
Any feedback is appreciated!
Thanks!

I always mist it with water and then put the fondant over that. I have also used piping gel because its sticky. That way you can just wash your dummy and reuse it for another time!

To roll the top edge, place the styro on a hard surface at an angle so just the edge is touching; press down rather hard as you roll it along the surface. It should compless the hard edge so it looks rolled.

Thanks for these tips. I, too, have been wondering what to do with a cake dummy. It will certainly cut down the time when I just want to practice decorating.

I always cover my dummies in Glad Press N Seal first, then add a thin layer of piping gel, then my fondant. This way, you can easily peel off the Glad and reuse the dummy.

Do you have to use styrofoam or can you use a hat box?

OOH i like the idea of using glad wrap on them. I bought some, but couldn't reuse them, and I was totally bummed because I need all the practice I can get.

You guys are making this too hard. Spray a light spritz of water on the dummy. Apply fondant. When you want to remove the fondant, put it in the sink or bathtub under running water. The fondant will disolve.

Sometimes you don't have the time to wait for it all to dissolve under running water, and not sure I would want to deal with the clean up of the bathtub after soaking a cake dummy in it icon_lol.gif . Plastic wrapping it allows it to all come off quickly and cleanly ready to re-wrap and use again. But to each his own, all the methods suggested on here will work. Use to one (or two) that works best for you. thumbs_up.gif

Great tip kakeladi! Rolling the edges! I was wondering how to make the dummy look more "real"... awesome idea...
